    a friend of mine met her boyfriend on a train in paris, she thought it was going to be a before sunrise situation because he had a different accent to her (she’s from NZ and he sounded english) only to find out that he actually moved to NZ when he was younger and they were on the same flight home! they’ve been together for like 6 years now
    life really is crazy sometimes ♡

    “Watching a poem”. Yes. Exactly. Or a play. It’s very much a filmed play more so then a movie. And so accurately captures what it’s like. When you meet someone, maybe at a party, or like this on a trip. You talk all night, and because it’s a stranger and you are outside your normal life/ routine, the conversation is different. More reflective, more big picture. More like writing in your journal. Anyone who’s experienced that knows what a lovely moment that is. A moment out of time, out of the everyday. And I think this movie captures the feeling so well. Which is why I’ve always loved it. I’m glad you guys liked it too . Really hope you watch the next in the series ❤️

    The movie was inspired by a real life event in the director Richard Linklater’s life, in which he spent a night walking around talking with a woman he instantly hit it off with. And so what he wanted to do was to make a movie about those rare moments of true connection. I recommend you watch the remaining movies in the trilogy as soon as possible. Especially the second one, Before Sunset, is insanely great. Truly one of the best sequels in movie history.

  • @KatieFlaxbeard

    Rob!!! It really is a poem. I believe you all will like Before Sunset even better. FYI Ethan and Julie wrote much of their own dialogue in all three films. The director called them partners on the project.

    I was 18 when I first saw this movie. I'm 40 now, and through the years, I found each film resonating with me more the closer I was to their ages in each film. I just deleted a full novel as a comment because it was all just to say, essentially, that these films are like time capsules, and you can view them the way you view your own life. As you get older, you'll connect to them differently, and when you're in your 40s, you can look back at this first film like you're looking back at the you that you were when you were in your early 20s - the good and the bad. Can't wait for y'all to watch the other 2 as well!

    I don’t know if you guys read your comments, but I do want to say that this wasn’t a planned trilogy. This movie stood on its own. So for 9 years, you are left wondering if they ever got together again. It was left ambiguous on purpose.
    You also have to understand what it was like in 1995. There were no cell phones, there was no internet or social media. You just have to trust that someone will show up when and where you agreed to meet.

    • @SnailHatan
      @SnailHatan Год назад +4

      Huh? Internet was a thing, and landlines with international reach were a thing. Cell phones existed in the 1970’s. Tons of people had cells in the mid 90’s. If you really truly wanted to keep in touch, you could do it.

    • @IsThisThePrizeIveWaitedFor

      @@SnailHatan internet in 1995 was dial up and most people didn’t use it. It was just nerds on there (I know cuz was one of them). Cell phones were those giant bricks and most people couldn’t even afford them. Cell phones didn’t become more common until late 90s. Most people didn’t have email unless you were in college. Definitely no social media and no smart phones.

    • @danae8112
      @danae8112 Год назад

      @@SnailHatan Not many people were consistently online in 95. I only had email via the computer lab at my university, didn't own my own computer. International calling to Europe was roughly a dollar a minute (my brother had a girlfriend in London who had been an exchange student in the US for a year), and on a cell it would have been way more. So unless you had a lot of money it was much much harder to stay in touch. I was still writing letters to my friends until at least 1998.

      @@SnailHatan Cell phones were available in the mid-1990's but didn't really become common until early 2000. For lots of people they were too expensive and hence were a status symbol. You'll notice that neither of them whipped out a cell phone in this movie. Emails didn't come into common usage for the general public until around 2000. (Yes, I had to look that one up. I did remember getting my first email account around 2002.)

But that wouldn't be half as romantic, would it?

    So excited for you guys to watch this. My favorite love story/romance movies of all time. Best meet cute ever. The first two films especially are like visual poetry. Some really beautiful, quotable lines too. Please watch the rest of this trilogy, Before Sunset and Before Midnight.
    Director Richard Linklater based the film on a similar real life experience he had in 1989 with a woman named Amy Lehrhaupt. They met in a toy shop and ended up spending the whole night together but lost touch after that. He made the film as a kind of love letter to her hoping that she would see the film and they would reconnect. Linklater didn’t know then that Amy had passed away in a motorcycle accident in May 1994 before she reached her 25th birthday. Before Sunrise started filming a few weeks later. Linklater only learned of her death a few years ago when a friend of Amy’s who knew about the encounter, put it together and sent him a letter. 😭💔

It's so natural and genuine that ot makes you think it's improvised, but it's not at all. The long takes are so good too. The listening booth scene is one of my favorites scenes. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy hadn't heard that song before, they had only read the lyrics in the script, so you see them hear it for the first time in the scene.
