I lost my Dad when I was 18, and a week after that I was in no shape to do anything, I was a mess. I've always respected Dale Jr for getting back in the car and continuing on like he did.

The reason so many people love Dale Jr. was and still is very simple. He is as real as they come. That is exactly why I was one of his fans. I never saw an interview when Jr. was racing in which I thought he was bull shitting us. Over at his channel, my favorite portion of the Dale Jr. download is the Ask Junior segment. His series on Lost Speedways is right up his alley because, not only was Jr. a driver, but he is probably one of the biggest historians of the sport too.
I full heartedly agree. I was not a fan of Jr. or Sr. but I was 11 when Dale died and I cried like a baby. I knew how much the sport was going to be affected. I had animosity towards Jr afterwards cause I felt like everyone was expecting him to fill his father’s shoes. I’m glad to see that many years later he has definitely become his own man. I can now proudly say I am a huge fan of Dale Sr and Jr!

The only thing he kept to himself for a long time was his slight double vision after some concussions, but he obviously did that for a while so he could keep racing and keep his livelihood! It isn’t what we collect in life it’s what we leave behind. When I’m gone and people look at my son I want them to remember me well you can’t look at jr and not think of dale. For a while now, rumor has him bringing at least 1 of his Xfinity team drivers up to the Cup level, with the blessing and infrastructural assistance of Hendrick Motorsports’ and all their resources... But the Charter system has to be in place for him to be able to be quasi-successful as a Team Owner. Unfortunately, the going rate of a NASCAR Team Charter is escalating to an untenable amount of money. Right now, the going rate is between $15-18 MILLION DOLLARS... an insane amount of money to have to fork over just to be able to compete w/ the big dogs...

I would have hated to have been in his shoes after his dad died loved his book he wrote about his problems after the concussion I think in some ways that book may have saved a few drivers lives like his dad death saved so many because it made NASCAR do the safety stuff they should have done earlier
Think about this, he only joined Twitter on a bet. Jimmy had a bet/dare with Junior on the 500. If Junior won the 500 in 2014, he would have to join and use Twitter. It turn out to be a huge social media thing in NASCAR.
The thing about Jr is how he connects with average folks. He's got an innate talent for that. It prolly served him well behind the wheel as he read other drivers. But it serves him very well in his current role :)

He’s first ballot because of his popularity though as much as I hate to say it. He had a lot more struggles in his career than success. He had as much talent as anyone has ever had in a stock car but was never able to translate it into performance consistently. He was elite and part of the cream of the crop at the end of what I consider NASCARSs Golden Age which I personally feel started in the mid 90s and ended at the end of the 05 Daytona 500. From about 01-06 he was right up there with an elite group of all time greats (Gordon, Stewart, Johnson etc) who were in a league of their own among a field of tons of great drivers. But after that short period he constantly struggled to get the results that the equipment he had under him should have been getting. I firmly believe if Sr didn’t die he would’ve won multiple championships and be in the discussion of greatest ever. When he died, everything changed. A new team that was having success and clearly on its way to being one of the top powerhouses in the sport for years to come was ran into the ground by the monster step mom and Jrs performance quickly started to fade once the foundations and key pieces of the organization started to crumble away due to her incompetence, stubbornness, and most of all greed. Not to mention he lost the man who likely would have disciplined him to stay focused, considering he was not only his father but his boss. I also think his head injuries cost him a lot of success late in his career with Hendrick. After being at Hendrick for a few years he started showing a professional maturity that we hadn’t seen before in him. He seemed to have grown up a lot by then, learned a lot, and was now with the right team, the right equipment, the right people on and off the track, and the right frame of mind to perform at his absolute best, and he knew it. Unfortunately this is also when he started getting the concussions that ultimately ended his career. Obviously there is no way of knowing what could have been but it is my personal belief that had Sr lived, Jr would be a multi-time champ for DEI (which would be neck and neck with Hendrick year in and year out as the two most dominant teams in the garage) and one of the best ever period; or if the concussions hadn’t happened he would have strongly contended for multiple championships with Hendrick, probably winning at least one.
"He's the most popular driver and he doesn't drive anymore" - that's hard facts. It's sad there are no active NASCAR drivers that are considered "household names" - someone that Jimmy Fallon or whoever can mention on TV and non-sports people will actually recognize.

But 9.9/10 would know the names, petty, Gordon and Earnhardt. Jimmie Johnson too but not instantly like the others because he shares a name with a football legend. You’d have to specify driver for them to know who you’re talking about. But the first three, all you have to say is the last name and 99% of people instantly know who they are. I never even realized this but the OP is right and it is crazy and very sad. There legitimately isn’t one active driver who is anywhere close to a household name. Some regions of the country maybe, but the country or world as a whole? Nope, no one comes close.
i'd say the Busch brothers and Harvick are the last of those type of drivers.. it'll be interesting to see how the newer drivers build a name for themselves but i think Chase Elliott could likely be on his way to being one of those drivers over the next 3-5 years.

Nascar = You fly out to another state for a race weekend but you decide to quit right before you race = you find your own way home and will quickly be forgotten. Olympics = You fly to another country to compete and quit before you compete = we fly you home and praise you.
