The storyline was fresh and cute but the gem was the cast of the drama. Ding Yu Xi is such an expressive actor and when paired with Zhao Lu Si, they seem to play off each other's energy and adapt to each other which made the drama more enjoyable. I can't even leave out the actors who portrayed Zi Rui and Bai Ji. The drama would've been dry without them.
Unfortunately the actor/actress for Pei Heng and Chu Chu had more generic 2nd lead characters so they weren't really able to "Wow" on the acting front.
If they do make a season 2, I hope they can bring the entire cast back.

Was scouring Bilibili on theories and one suggests that the evidence that Hanshuo also traveled in are:
(1)how many of the other character follow their emotional arc (Ie. Chuchu falls for Hanshuo for almost zero reason IMO) but Hanshuo didn't follow the plot (original plot HS was willing to die for Chuchu)
(2)hanshuo treats Qianqian a lot better than other man from Xuanhu treats women, maybe his subconscious memory of modern day gender equality

And the fact that he didn't continue to poison ChenQian. I think that was the start. He really did so many things that was the opposite scenario in the script xiaoqian made. So I think that he was han shou but he has the heart of the actor Mr. Han.

It was Zhao Lu Si's best work by far (in my opinion). It's really amazing that I have coincidently watched many of her previous dramas without paying much attention to her supporting roles, yet now she has become one of my all time favorite chinese actress. Her chemistry in this drama with the ML just goes over the top, very sweet and warming to the heart. I would say that this drama did fairly well with keeping its romcom and "go with the flow" theme it has portrayed from the beginning till the end. The ending was not really satisfying and clear on my part, but since it seems happy, I shouldn't have the urge to complain. I've seen worse endings and this one is definitely one of the better ones. I'm really hoping to see more of her works and how she improves herself in the near future.

Their promotions also show very good chemistry. With some of her other male leads, she would treat them with a lot more distance, but she was still joking with Ding Yuxi in promotions, etc. There was a volley back with him. I wouldn't mind seeing them in another drama together.

Yoonmi Kim I believe that because , the company have taking over the promotion, finally. Maybe due to a lot of comments from the viewers / fans they question the company, why only do promotion for intense love. Additionally due to double promotion ( tiger and rose and intense love ) from Ding Xuyi, alone, he have made a wrong statement on his interview And create a big issue, Xuyi mistakenly got confused between his drama and real life 😄 ( cause he also new and not yet experience) , But all is fixed now. I can see from the live interview they have, the company tried to put him on the situation of the drama, and the host showed the differences between drama and real life.

Agree with you on the (micro-)expressions of Ding Yu Xi. I did take notice of it. Mostly the actors (and actresses) are either stony faced or are hamming it up. I‘ve rarely seen such nuanced expressions. I’ve enjoyed it immensely and re-watched many scenes. Thank you for the links to your friend‘s slow-mow!
Plus both Zhao Lusi and him have great comedic timing. And hearing the fl/script writer herself commenting the plot as unnecessarily dramatic and bloody was the cherry on top.

  • @EloiseInParis
    @EloiseInParis 4 года назад +88

I agree about the scenario of why Han Shou didn't remember who he was. Because when he woke up in the hospital he was really confused, and his mumbling when she walked out was him thinking he was crazy.
Also Ding Yuxi's other drama Intense Love also just came out and he is really good in it. I believe his character has fallen for the female lead. However he does not look at Zhang Yu Xi remotely the way his eyes would focus on Zhao Lu Si. Also little moments like the kiss when he took the cake out of her mouth was not in the script and a "mistake" he made. And the scene when they were in the bed when he was angry at her and was going to assault her, he licks her ear. Although the scene is not supposed to be seductive in anyway he lost himself for a moment. His attraction to her was very real, it was all in his eyes, and it added so much to the drama. I really hope there is a season 2 and everyone can return.

i dont think we’ll ever get the same cast on the 2nd season since they are avoiding each other after the drama. i think it was the issue about ding yuxi promoting his other drama while still promoting TROTAR at the same time he was bashed for that he even made an apology video and my instincts tell me that zhao lusi is avoiding him because of that base on their behind the scenes.

I am currently on episode 15 and I’ve been loving it so far. The ML plays an exceptionally good role here. I don’t know if he is acting or not but I truly believe the ML is in love with the FL. The ways he looks at her, treats her and cares for her are so natural like lover to lover.

This was a very entertaining show for me. I agree with some who state that the FL kinda plays the same character (acts the same way), but her charisma is one of the things I enjoy most. Her liveliness draws the eye and the way the ML played off that kept me coming back. Also, they weren't as stiff as dramas of this time period often require, but that could also be because it is a comedy. Whatever the case, I enjoyed the way it poked fun at bad scriptwriting (while sometimes falling into those traps), as well as, the cast. Thanks for your analysis and ideas AvenueX.

*Spoiler: discussion on ending* Interesting pov on how Han Yingdi actually lived through Hanshuo’s life since infancy. I didn’t thought of that! Great thought. But, for me I’d think he actually went back only slightly earlier at the part where Hanshuo and Chenqianqian first encounter at the horse incident. Cause during the last episode he actually said to Chenxiaoqian: “I’m warning you, don’t come over! You don’t know how scary it was! Something strange hit me all of a sudden” hinting that his world kinda merge when the car / chenqianqian flew towards him.

I started this drama because 2 things: 1) your recommendation and 2) 'cause it was 24 ep. long!!!! But I went in really expecting nothing, just like I did when I watched The Eternal Love 1&2 and The Love by Hypnotic... But this one got me by surprise!!! I didn't expect at all to laught so much with evety little sarcastic thing they pull out.
The way they tried always to make you (as the audience) part of the scritp it super refreshing for me. All their acting has all this little moments to make you aware something is out of place like when the actress shakes her head to be "more focuss in reality" or when the actor makes little head side expressions when something in the plot has no logic at all.
Even if is a sad moment, like in ep. 18 where I cried like crazy, just because I was really so enroll in the story that I could feel the pain in the actor's face, the scritp tries to pull you out from the drama and make you laugh, with a sarcastic comment from someone or her helper and asking her why she didn't agree to "cook the rice", if what she wants is to be together with him? XD
For all this little details and comments on point that makes you involved as an audience, the woman's & man's city situation, the apple - banana - orange situacion, and all the actors' performances, I can say is one of the most enjoyable series I watch so far this year. Even with all the low budget faults and the ending, that for me was a little like: "what?, why?, where? " or now that I think of it, Could it be the script's way to make fun of every drama ending so rush and with some lose ends??

This drama wasn't on my radar until I watched your initial impression, and that caught my attention. So, I gave it a try, and was delighted!
As I've previously said, I am not a big fan of romcoms, and I didn't recognize any of the actors in this drama. However, the two leads immediately charmed me, and were very successful in inhabiting their characters, bringing them to life and making me care about what happened to them.
The storyline was a fairly standard drama trope, of a character traveling back in time to an unfamiliar world and finding love. However, the twists of the scriptwriter finding herself in her own (unoriginal, trope-filled) script - not as the Female Lead, but as a mere side character, added purely as a plot device, and expected to meet the common fate of such limited characters, by conveniently meeting an untimely death just 3 episodes into the dramas - gave this a fresh, original, quirky feel that I found very appealing. Plus, as you note, the two actors playing the respective servants/Man Fridays of the two leads were very good, and provided another level of humor to the story.
The totally unexpected revelation of the identity of a recently introduced character, in the penultimate episode, made me laugh out loud in delight! (And while unexpected, it was culturally relevant, given the anticipation over the release of the Disney film featuring that character - no spoilers here, but I'm sure you know the character to whom I am referring). The character's actions, after being inspired by the FL, were hilarious. I really enjoyed that deft little joke from the writer.
I agree with you about the gender equality/feminist/women's rights storyline. For me, it was an unexpected and fun twist, again adding a fresh feel to an often used/overused drama trope, but even in a romcom, it could have been a more consistent theme running through the drama, instead of mostly being played for humor, and mostly at the beginning and the end. However, it still worked to add something to the drama that made it seem not the ordinary, time-travel romcom.
As for the shared scene, or the inside joke, or something to bring the two leads dream experience into the present, I actually thought the last scene did that rather well. He makes a comment about the script, naming his and her characters, as she is leaving the hospital bed, and closing the door, just as she closed the door to their bedroom where he lay in bed with his lung injury, in their last scene along in the dream/script. He starts peeling a banana, which was his "symbol" when she was frantically trying to "fix" the story so first she herself, and then both of them, would survive. And outside the door, she stops, freezes, and recalls what he'd just said, and the significance it has:
"MISS ORANGE, I'm already like this, and you are still discussing the script?"
And there it was - the sign she had been looking for, the confirmation that the handsome actor lying in the bed, with the same injury as her beloved husband, was, indeed, her Han Shuo. That satisfied me.
As usual, thank you so much for introducing me to this charming drama, and making me a fan of this writer, and of these talented young lead actors, and of the other excellent actors who made this drama so enjoyable. It was a much appreciated, happy escape from the dreariness of 2020, and as usual, I have you to thank. Now, on to watch The Bad KIds, because if you award 3 Goldmines, it's a must see for me! Be well! And happy Cdrama watching!

I think that's the best and most logical explanation for the ending! Some people consider Han Shuo and Han ying di as 2 different entities but I like to think of them as one same person. It's exactly the same logic as what happens to the characters of fantasy period dramas like Eternal Love and Ashes of Love, they also live through an entire lifetime with a new identity in the human realm with no past memories, but when they die and regain their normal selves they keep all memories and feelings. I agree that the ending didn't deliver it too well, especially on the male lead's side. His reaction makes it harder for us to believe he was always himself.

I am enjoying this drama, especially because I also write and it is very interesting to observe the reasoning that the protagonist uses to construct her argument while she is within her own story. It is true that, as we write, sometimes the story and the characters have a tendency to take their own course and escape our control (at least this has already happened to me) and this is quite disconcerting. I am also enjoying the chemistry between the actors, not to mention the secondary actors (with a particular focus on the couple's two servants). Thank you so much, again, for your review!

I totally agree with the ending part. I was really enjoying the drama; all smiles, and when I saw the ending I was like "What? Just like that?"
We don't even know if they started dating or decided to be friends. I wish they at least put a scene where they actually film the drama and they follow the new script, since the whole story revolves around our FL finding out the flaws in her script and also understating love. Also the ML having the same dream and being confused has also left me confused.
Also, for me the part how the FL returned to the reality was - I don't even have words. Was it really necessary to let Han Shuo get hurt like that? But it does make me think that, if he wasn't going to die soon we'll he really let her go like that? Consider he looks quite devastated when the FL joke about going back.
So that's me rambling. Love the video.

Taking this drama from a pure writer's PoV, I really, really liked the writing. I recognized the quirks right off the bat of writers and how much XQ skimmed off the world building, etc which is much like a first draft. There are a lot of in-jokes for fellow writers in the drama, and lots of little winks that people won't get. The inconsistency of the world building is solidly made fun of throughout the drama, though it's not front and center. I also like her taking shots at leftover women, the meta bits, and the fact that the drama didn't lose steam anywhere. It picked it up and there is at least one laugh per episode put in, but without expense to the emotional weight. Some of the writing was fairly clever along the way without being too self-aware to lose everything. Most non-writers don't understand the writer in-jokes, but I really loved them since it was clear that it was self-deprecating humor throughout. (The campfire talk, too, was funny bit of meta).
    .
I won't dispute final production values, but I will say that the costumes I thought were pretty well thought out, though, I suppose one could bring it to extremes, I really did appreciate the small decisions to the costuming to fit the story. (I recognize there is no historical accuracy, but there was quite a bit of thought to positioning, and signaling the watchers) I also liked the shot work--which wasn't sloppily done compared to some other dramas I've seen from China recently. So, I think the only nitpick is really post production.
    .
Re: The ending I kinda figured it out from episode 1, what the ending would be. But I saw the ending as yet more Meta--that actors get absorbed into their roles and forget them, leaving who they are behind. Whereas writers try to play God in their worlds. He asks her in episode 1, if she would fall in love with him, so I figured the ending is harkening to the line in episode 1, but writers think this way, and think they have it all put down and still, still, some people miss it, because they aren't used to the winks that writers put in. Meanwhile, fellow writers are more likely to recognize it, making it much harder to edit those cues. It's difficult to figure the balance because one has to figure out pacing, tone, etc against such information dropped and how quick the intended audience will be. To me, it was set from episode 1, but I noticed a lot of non-writers didn't pick up on those cues. It's always tricky. A lot of writers struggle with this until their dying days.

I’m looking forward to your own final impression and whether you think it managed to keep its steam to the very end! Hopefully you enjoyed it too.
    Also SORT OF SPOILERS:
I also know some people said the ending felt rushed, which I tentatively agree with, but it’s one of those strange instances where I love the two leads so much I didn’t entirely mind because I enjoyed the happy ending.
I’ve heard rumblings about a season 2 and I will...tentatively be hopeful they can keep the momentum going. 🤔
*EDIT:* I’ve also seen people interpret the actor’s lack of memories as Han Shuo due to him being an actor (the idea that they get so into their roles they become the characters-in this case, literally), while Chen Qianqian retains her memories due to being a screenwriter.
So that could potentially be another layer added to the whole idea that Han Shuo also traveled into the script earlier!

Something I didn't realize on my first watch of the drama: the male lead's character DOES actually have some memories of his contemporary actor self, it's why he called the female lead her real name without prompting. I was a little confused when I first saw the scene because I thought it was contrived fluff for the sake of fluff but it was actually an early clue that the actor was in the script as well.

Let’s not forget the matriarchal and patriarchal societies are created by the female protagonist ( a shitty scriptwriter) at the first place! They are as problematic and simplistic as her capability as a writer. And within the story the female lead always says ‘this is a romantic story I am writing’, and confessed in one of the later episodes she created the two societies for the joy of catching eyeballs and the sensation of getting empowered in a matriarchal society, and she finally realised the set-up is illogical. So I actually think your criticism is a point well done. This drama rants about currently so many romantic dramas just badly recycle the old tropes in a ‘new’ setting without proper research whether the old tropy conflicts still appropriate.

Thank you so much for clarifying your theory about the ending! I didn't realize that a couple of days have passed between her meeting the actor and them seeing each other again at the hospital. Now it also makes sense why he was so confused, because he really lived Han shuo's life without ever realizing that he went into the script.
And I totally agree with how rushed the ending was. In typical cdrama land fashion, the couple gets torn apart and only gets back together in the last 3 mins of the show. I guess it's an improvement cause at least now they don't end in tragedy 99.9999% of the time? Would have loved to see the main couple interact for more than 5 mins at the end tho!

So it actually turns out that we are getting a season 2, and may possibly get more than that as they were thinking about making it into a franchise type of thing. I would say it explains why they made the ending as such.

I first saw Zhang Lusi in Oh My Emperor and I was not impressed of her acting on that as I forced myself finishing that one just bec of XZ. I kinda vow not to watch any of her dramas. But one day a friend of mine recommends this drama and I promise her to do it so we can discussed it together. But the moment I tried watching it and saw ZLS, I immediately exit the video lol, really I was contemplating whether to watch it or not but since I promised, I said if ep1 satisfy me then I'll finish it all....and surprisingly it did. I was so shocked that both leads deliver a very pleasing charms and act so well, the plot was fun and it was all so cute, so sweet. I saw how ZLS acting have improved and I was just so impressed with Ding Yu Xi... I'm gonna search his other works. His facial expression is so good.. Watching this drama is such an unexpectedly so pleasant that makes me so happy :))

I just commented on this ! I like to think of the male lead as one same person throughout the entire story. Even if his character is all set up by the FL, it's only the "hardware". He is influenced by it for sure just like how we are all shaped by our upbringing and environment, but it is shown a few times that his personality is not the same as his original setup. Even when he went dark, he didn't do any of the things the original ML was supposed to do-heck he did nothing except act out of frustration towards the FL(which is why his dad was mas). In the original script, he was in love with the sister all the same but he still betrayed her and carried out his plan. So I do think he kept his personality all along, even if for example his taste(likes and dislikes)follows the setting his thought process and reactions are completely different. Even in the way he treats the FL later in the story deviates a lot from it. So when he woke up it's as if he lost his memory for a while and then remembered them. But yeah, the ending was disappointing in the delivery, he should of recognized here sooner or in a more convincing way.

I didn't went as far interpreting the male lead's story of transmigration. I loved the end, but you're right that it is too short & rushed (the "real world" part) and it's not fully explained. I just thought the character got out of the story and transmigrated into the actor's body, retaining his host's memories and his own memories too. I never considered that he might had transmigrated to the story first, not remembering a thing of his life in the real world, and then transmigrated back, but with the addition of Han Shuo's experience and memories.

I've never been in a Chinese hospital so I can't really comment on that but I would say yes. It is pretty common here in Australia and Asian countries from my experience. Though different hospitals, states/countries, and depending on the actual patient could have different policies for bringing in food.

Damn that’s a great theory about what happened to Han-laoshi lol. It almost has that 前世今生 + amnesia trope vibe, which I admit are my guilty pleasures. 😂
Also, great point about the matriarchal society setting. Even though I never excepted this type of drama to do a great job, I still couldn’t help but notice they didn’t flesh it out very well. (Example: when Lin Qi went to Xuanhu and apparently was living there with no complaints. I was like ?? Her? She seemed far too prideful to accept Xuanhu’s social norms...) Oh well.
Either way, I still enjoyed this drama a lot! It’s been a long time since a drama made me laugh so hard + the acting far exceeded my expectations. I even liked most of the supporting cast which rarely happens haha. This drama should be a new minimum standard...

You can check out AvenueX's video on this topic. ruclips.net/video/q2wAzbgjt8A/видео.html. She explained it very nicely. Besides the three reasons she mentioned: accent, ability of line delivery and money. Another reason seldom mentioned is the censorship. Unlike in many other countries (shooting and broadcasting in parallel), all dramas in China need to be sent to the censorship department for check up before the broadcasting. If the department finds sth improper for them, they will return the drama for changes, which actually happens nearly to every drama. The easiest and cheapest way of changing is to change the lines. When the voice work is put into the post-production pipeline (dubbing can be done by the actors/actresses themselves or done by the professional voice actors/actresses), it is much easier for the production team to handle this kind of situation.
Actually not most cdramas are dubbed, it is more like most of historical/Xian Xia/Wu Xia cdramas are dubbed. A lot of cdramas with modern background, which have less exposure internationally are using original voices. Actually quite some high quality historical cdramas are using original voices or dubbing by the actors/actress like the Longest Day in Chang'an, Story of MingLan, Joy of Life, Nirvana in Fire etc. In the Romance of Tiger and Rose, i think only the ML is using voice actor. The FL and major side characters are using their real voices in dubbing.

But the end of it, there is not a reason why the male lead needs to be in love with the script writer girl either. He hated her so much at first and suddenly he changed his attitude because she wrote him so she knew about his childhood and his disease and his suffering so she talked to him about these and he changed his mind. It is like super cheating. Let alone the end of it turned the female lead into the villain just because the writer jumped into the script and now she was the main character so any other characters have to make way for her and she will have whatever she wants even she didn't even work hard for it like her sister. To add salt to the wound, her sister was not even the real daughter of the head of state, she was the biological daughter so she was born with the right to be the head of state anyway. So this whole story becomes the story of nepotism. The logic of this story did not make any sense and I am surprised that you failed to see that.
