- This video shows how to remove the headliner in a Volkswagen Golf Mk4. I tried to break it down into steps to make it easier. There is no right or wrong order in doing this. Be careful and good luck!

Great and Sensible Video, simple and straightforward.
This helped me get my headliner off my 98 mk4 gti. So wish there was another video showing how to put a new headliner fabric on but thank you for the good start on removal!
Thanks bud! Glad you found my video.
Good video. My granddaughter and I are going to replace the headliner in her VW Golf. She has her temps and her first car.
Thank you and good luck with everything. What a great first car!
Awesome video! I need to drop mine to replace the sunroof drain tubes. Getting water in my car. I'm guessing the people that didn't like the video just absolutely hate videos in general! 😂😂😂
Huge help. Thanks from Portugal.
Glad I could help you. You're welcome.
Thanks looks do-able. Hope I can get it back together! Great video
Gerry Morin - Thanks!
Thank you .. a big help
Excellent.. thanks
Before loosening the nuts from the seatbelts, be sure to tape the belt together just below the bolt with ducktape or so. The aim is that the belt can't move. On the B pillar it's not a big issue, but on the C pillar it can be. When the belt is loosened completely, it can roll back and get stuck. Then you've to buy a new one...
Very helpful buddy, mine is hanging over my head so will right away fix it
Edgar Adolph Good luck with it and be patient!
Thx! A'm apsolutly amater and video helps.
Very nice video bro !!!! Thank you!
Thank you very much!
Thanks man! :-)
Thx bro
Detailed video 👌👍👍👍
Mr. MOTORMASTER - Thank you!
Agreed, thank you for making the video. Same question as below, how did you get the foam off the headliner?
Mine came off really easy. I used a clean rag and kept wiping the old foam off. It is a mess, but it only took me about 20 minutes.
I used a old flip flop- rubber easily scapes foam off
you did a great job Cory with one hand as i know your other hand on the mobile phone or camera i have a golf with a few spots coming loose mine is the same color as your headliner , i see some people are using dark material fabric like what is in the GTI s it looks well are you doing a video for the refit as this is great to see folk using thier skills , have you got new fabric yet as i was woundering where you are sourcing your material and adhesive 3M have very good adhesive for roofliners its 3M08090 headliner fabric adhesive , send message any time ,all the best for now and greetings from Ireland
Thanks John. It was challenge making this video that's for sure! For the adhesive, I used 3M hi-strength 90 and I purchased the foam backed fabric roll on eBay. Unfortunately, I didn't make a refit video and I wish that I would've since I've had a few requests for one. I chose to purchase black headliner fabric, which still looks good to this day (I did this job about 5 years ago). This job requires lots of patience, but you can do it if you really want to. I would do it again if I had to. Good luck with everything if you decide to take the challenge.
Great Video - will have to do to my 2000 GTI VR6 - headliner sagging.
Aamir Moinuddin - Thank you. I wish I had a VR6!
Cory Mondics I did the removal today. Came out good. Your video was super helpful. I also fixed the sunroof drain. I had pulled off the drain tube about 10 years back. Still had the tube and with the headliner off it was easy to put it back on. I love my 2000 GTI VR6. It's got 384K miles on it. I think the headliner will probably outlast the car. Let's see what the future holds. Thx again for a super video.
@@aamirmoinuddin9904 - I'm glad to hear that. Thanks for watching and have fun with that VR6!!
@@Corysdiyauto Headliner done will post some pic's - came out pretty good couple of the interior lights did not come out like factory (oh well). There were a couple of nuances with the sunroof shade slider as I had to get that off to do the upholstery, but I was able to tackle it. AGAIN YOUR VIDEO WAS SUPER EASY TO FOLLOW AND WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL. THANKS AGAIN.
@@aamirmoinuddin9904 - Good work! Thanks for watching and I'm glad that you found the video to be helpful.
Good jop!-thanks
Thank you!
Thank you very much for making this video, was dreading having to do this but now it seems incredibly simple. How did you remove the foam from the liner?
I scraped the foam off with a clean rag. It comes off very easily!
Cory Mondics well that was a nightmare, the A pillar wouldnt detatch, you never showed how the B pillars detach the C pillar doesnt even make sense how it is attached but i got further on that one than A and B, and tons of clips broke...still a good video, i just hate my car now lol
Well, I am glad that you got it removed, and yes I could've been more explicit on how to remove the B pillars. Those clips do suck though!
@@Corysdiyauto
Having had to remove this type of foam from various trim items I can assure you the word "Easy" doesn't come to mind.
I have found that just using dry lint free cloth will remove most of the foam. A horrible, time consuming and tedious job.
@@harwoods11 - Well, in my case the foam just wiped off, which was easy. I understand that your situation might have been different.
Great Video! This is what I need to do. Did you make a video about how you repair it? what you did, you just glue it again? The glue won't stain the fabric? (Edited) - Ok, I just got some info in the comments :)
reikhard79 - Thank you! Unfortunately I didn't make a video of how I glued the new fabric on the headliner. Yeah, if you read through the comments you'll find out what I did. I also put links in the description for the glue and fabric that I used.
Once you get the headliner off, where do you get the replacement fabric & foam, and what's the procedure to get it on?
supasoul20 I got the headliner fabric on eBay. Make sure that you get the foam backed liner. It's not that expensive either. I used 3M hi-strength 90 contact adhesive spray to adhere the fabric to the liner.
supasoul20 Now, to adhere the fabric to the liner is the tricky part. I should've made a video of this, but I didn't. Do one half of the liner at a time. Lay the fabric on the liner, then fold in half with the foam facing up. Then spray both the fabric and the headliner board and wait about 3 minutes. Next, fold the fabric down on to the headliner board and gently use your hands and press down on the fabric. Be sure to work your way from the center out. Make sure that you have enough fabric hanging over the edges. It's better to have more than enough. You can always cut the excess off. Good luck with it!
Do you have to disconnect battery in case air bags go off when removing side pillars
Jeff Qureashi - My Golf is not equipped with air bags in the side pillars. I didn't disconnect the battery when I removed the headliner either. It's not necessary.
same thing happened in my 98 beetle.. ripped it out.. now it rains foam !
Capt Larry - that foam is a mess too!
Great video. Good detail. Although the camera work could be improved. None the less great video
Rivet 0153 - Thank you. I try my best with the camera work.
@@Corysdiyauto i get it man, its hard to work on cars with 2 hands sometimes so with one hand recording and the other pulling parts apart its even more difficult.
I dont know why somebodey can dislike this video? 14 dislike?why?
Any chance you could show the b pillar top interior trim removal? You skipped that bit and it was the exact bit I wanted to see! xD
W - I will have to make a video on that. I didn't film that part unfortunately.
@@Corysdiyauto thanks for your reply! any chance you could just roughly describe it for me? I'm just trying to remove the headliner,,, so can I just pull outwards on the top end of the trim where it contacts the edge of the headliner?
@@user-rw5wj1xe1o - Once you remove the seat belt, then you have to pry the b - pillar away from the body of the car. I believe that I started at the top and worked my way down. It's held in there pretty good! Just slowly work your fingers behind it and gently pull out towards you. I hope that helps.
@@Corysdiyauto cheers I’ll give it a try next week thanks
Hey could you make a video on how to put a new headline in
Maybe one day, but there's nothing in the works at the moment.
@@Corysdiyautookay thank you how tricky is it putting the headliner back into place that's what I worry about pulling my one down and not being able to put it back up 😆
@@mellowbeings2175 - It's easier if you have a helper, but you can do it yourself with some patience. The worst part for me was prepping the headliner and gluing the new fabric into place. I just simply don't like that type of work, but it needed to be done. It all paid off in the end though.
@@Corysdiyauto yeah it's worth a shot my headliner looks terrible I have MK4 golf TDI 1.9 turbo diesel it's only had 2 owners from new so it's not to bad some old boy was selling it. It has a few marks and the sides because he lived out in the country side so it's from all the bushes and the driver side wing is rusty around the arch but I have a new one now that needs putting on there decent cars they just have rust problems
@@mellowbeings2175 - I understand that. Mine has rust that needs fixed on the rockers and rear hatch near the handle. I love the car though!
You from Pittsburgh?
Vincent Machi - yes I am!
Install?
Install in reverse order of removal. I didn't create a video of that though.
Didn’t help
Exotica - Which part didn't help you?
Not step by step at all
