- Grotsnik lives quite the charmed life for an Ork even after having a goodly chunk of his brain matter removed via circular saw! In part due to his mythical reputation as personal Painboy to Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka and in part due to his lunatic ability to succeed in the most impossible surgeries! One time out of 100 that is of course... But to a greenskin in need themz pretty good odds!

Grotsnik is Ghaz's PERSONAL painboy. Every single ounce of his medical expertise is reserved for the Prophet. Everyone and everything else is just research material.
in a surprising stray thought indeed tis special painboy is ghas personal one not for his talent or expertise but for the simple thought that ''hmm , stuff me not tested before try on others first , stuff me know what should happen use on propeth! ..so gork and mork not on me be angry'' its also the mentality of his 'assistants' thus why even if grotsnik demand it they pretend all the ..untested.. things is gone if its zee propeth thats worked on XD

His second biggest achievement was saving Gaz after his duel with Blackmane. He took Gaz's severed head and stitched it onto a new ork body he had apparently been building out of spare corpses in his spare time. The new body was twice the size if Gaz's old one so Gaz was quite happy with the results.
It hurts my brain a little that that somehow makes *slightly* more….. ’sense’ than regular ork ”medicine”.

Considering how everything within Ork society depends on how big the Warboss is and how big the Waagh is Grotznik might just have skipped years of needed growth for Gaz and his Waagh XD

It is not the stupid pain boy that achieved his only success... But that of his helpful crew using the work as a shield least someone else try and focus on them.
Gazghull's origin story has got to be one of the orkiest things to ever ork. Bro literally had brain surgery and then decided to immediately go headbutt the warlord to death and take his place
And, this time, it actually WORKED!
Grotsnik suddenly becoming super competent when he attends to Ghaz may have a lot to do with how the Ork WAAGH energy works. If you believe it will work, it will work. Ghaz believes that Grotsnik is the best Painboy and through Ghaz everyone else believes that. So when he comes to work on Ghaz the focused belief that Grotsnik is the best actually elevates the Ork to previously unheard of levels of competency allowing him both to use the knowledge gained from his experiments to treat Ghaz effectively and probably unlock previously hidden talents as a doctor that every Painboy would have if enough energy is poured into them.
That's the only way my brain can even comprehend how that quack of a doctor, even of a Painboy, can consistently treat Ghaz.
I mean even though we don't have proof gork and Mork are most likely real so divine intervention is also possible
Imagine the infamous WW 2 research unit but make it *ORKY* *VERY* *VERY* *ORKY*
I like the idea that Grotsnik's gretchin are actually very talented and do most of the day to day work. Kind of makes sense, you'd have to be a clever gretchin to survive around a maniac like Grotsnik. And Grotsnik's wild experimentations might actually have some merit for learning what not to do as a painboy furthering the gretchin orderlies education.
This is exactly why I played Orks, they're completely bonkers, and so much fun.
Going to a painboy is a scary aspect because you might leave without something, or something else attach to you. And it might be worse depending on the particular painboy

Alternitive thought for why the grechies saved our good doctor. Considering just how many mobs he made angry and their involvment with it.....would it be unreasionable to expect them to turn to the now defenseless staff for some....shall we say very invasive and intense individual therapy?
The doc gets to play lighting rod. The staff gets to not find out what being a bumper in a demo derby feels like. And they get to....practice their....err skills on a willingish patient.
Win win win for them.
The tale of Grotsnik reminds me of the original Painboy rules where an ork could end up with extra arms, rocket legs or, if they were extremely *"lucky"* an extra head!

I love both Arch’s Ork and Imperial Guard lore videos. Two VERY different kinds of lore and video but just so good!!!
I like to think this is proof that the only limit on Orks is their own imagination, that the Wagh can work on a lone individual if they have the right inspiration. Most orks die because they think they should die, but once in a while, an Ork, for whatever reason, just believes they should not only survive but be stronger for it, and because they believe strongly enough, IT HAPPENS.
Ghaz, probably because of how his brain was scramble, believed he saw Gork and Mork, believed he had to live up to their call, and so he just did, plain and simple.
Grotsnik similarly was inspired to believe in his own survival and mission to be the best Painboy for Ghaz he could be, and so he lived and now seems to be remarkably good at keeping Ghaz alive while remaining indifferent to others.
This explains the tendency of the greatest Orks to have similar stories of extreme maiming and survival against odds, only to get stronger for it. It is a microcosm of the Wagh. Just as when a group of Orks believe in a thing, it can happen, If an extraordinary Ork believes enough in itself, it rises above the petty limitations of its body and starts to become a real powerhouse.

I usually listen to you while exercising and it has become a habbit for 2 years now. I subbed many years prior and been watching/listening since then, but I think I have found a sweet spot between learning more lore about my favorite sci-fi IP and doing something to better myself at the same time these last two years. People tend to misinterpret that Painboyz seem to inflict a lot of suffering on their patients and generally this isn't the case. Most upstanding members of the 'Proffesshun' at least make sure the Orks in their care are unconscious before ministering to them, either by use of 'actual' anaesthetic that the Painboy has invented as a result of his medical experimentation, a syringe squig or, more likely, with a few tactical blows to the head with a suitably big enough hammer.

Ork 40k lore is probably my favorite sci-fi lore out there. Perfect balance of interesting, dumb, but still completely feasible within the framework of how their "society" functions. To quote one Eldar philosopher, "Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! We see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude."
This really makes me beleive in that theory that the old ones used to be the Gretchen.
