  • Sailing Lake Tapps, WA!!! Too much wind to be singlehanding the Hobie 18 with both sails up! Started with the trapeze mis-rigged and scared my 8 year old right out of the boat. Eventually pulled out the jib, which made for fast thrilling sailing all the way until I got the thing blown over and upside down. Took two power boats to get upright, including a very powerfull bass boat. Just too much boat/sail/wind to be out there solo.

You need 300lbs on the righting rope to turn a H18 over. It will turn into the wind and come over. The wind will probably help. When I'm solo I have a water bag I can fill up to give me enough weight to solo it over.

Great vid mate, but in those conditions I'd have let the main traveller out to at least halfway. And get the downhaul bar tight. I've turtled my 18 and had to get help to right it, but I've waterproofed the mast and installed a mastfloat so that will help. I sail mostly solo. Great sailing!!

Your ancestors would be proud to see centuries of seafaring distilled to this👏 🏴‍☠️. Definitely better than they had it!

It should be easy to come from an upside down position to a sideway one, it looks like your mast isnt waterproof, you should use sykaflex to fill everypotential holes in it. And to prevent any further turtling i recommend you to move your body to the front of the capsized boat when you see it going all the way upside down. This will "anchor" the front of the boat into the wind instead of sideways, sideway wind is the reason why the boat flips completely. Sorry for my english i hope i made my comment clear enough, it is not my first language. Good luck !

Ah man haha been there. Need that extra hand on the windward hull. Great fun though! Not too keen myself on the masthead float. But certainly would have helped here. Tight halyards.

Let the main sheet out all the way and a float on the mast really helps

Nice sailing bro. I am impressed that boat can be righted solo.

I'm not sure it can with the setup I had here. After capsize, the boat drifted 180 degrees. When I tried righting it, I had 25 knots on the trampoline helping push it upright, and it didn't even slow down as it went through the vertical and back over the other way! I absolutely loved that boat, but this was the 4th time I capsized, and I cant ask my neighbors on the lake to be that vigilant every time I go out. I dont have the self control to depower the rig, so I bought a Vanguard 15 instead.

@@planesnthings keep in mind you need the wind coming from fore to right a catamaran! it is much much easier this way, wind will get push the sail out from the water and the cat goes up almost by itself. i learnt this the wrong way (trying to right my 14 and not being successful). if you need to rotate the cat when capsized, just swim with it.

Trapeze dog bones lines can be a lot longer, you should be able to trapeze almost flat, you are practically sitting.

I have 2, H 18s. I've never capsized in one tho. But I read, that if you do turtle, wrap a rope around the front of one of the pontoons, then stand on the back of the opposite one, and pull it up that way. It's one thing to sail and capsize on a lake, as compared to the open ocean, where I sail. I would much prefer the lake.

Haven't heard that technique. I sold the boat, but it is still close by, I'll have to try it if given the opportunity!
