    Hi Laura. Yesterday I turned 57. I wanted to share with you the gifts you and Aaron have given me over the last year. I started gardening last March and was failing miserably (Phoenix 9B), planting things at the wrong time, in the wrong light, etc. - every rookie gardener mistake. Your channel kept being suggested to me and I started watching. Seeing you break up tasks (the weekly zone map tasks), seed starting, and even doing what I would have thought previously as mundane tasks like weeding - has boosted how much I get accomplished and in turn, my enthusiasm (see one, do one). Each day the yard looks healthier and prettier. The Hubs and I find ourselves 'walking the estate' at the end of the day to see what's grown since he saw it the night before, then sitting in the rockers just relaxing when previously we rarely spent any time out back (we have a little over a 1/4 acre and have lived here over a decade). I'm healthier than I've been in years from all the stretching and bending and am getting 'farm girl feet' tan : ) Thank you both for the gifts you have bestowed upon me by sharing what you know and always encouraging new gardeners like me that there's more than one way to do things, it's ok to make mistakes, and to just keep trying. Love to all from 100 degree Phoenix - yep my tomatoes are already scorching.

      Happy Birthday! And what a beautiful share of how gardening has improved your life’s. I agree with how Laura has evening made weeding seem a not so mundane chore! I am a planting, landscaping, garden loving,constant learner…who loves starting my day with a cup of coffee and watching Laura. PS….I am 61, and agree about the health benefits! I am sore at night and when wake up…but a good sore…and back outside after a few stretches! Haha

      @seanaames6855 Год назад

      If you stab wooden or metal BBQ skewers (Dollar Tree carries packs of 2-3, 18" metal skewers) into the soil around the plants, the cat won't be able to lay on them. We had a cat who nibbled ours to death, though, so maybe your cat will shift to nibbling instead if they don't have access to laying on them. 😅 I did notice that if you can keep from mashing the leaves when you plant, the cats aren't quite as likely to harass them.

    I’ve learned so much watching your videos, Laura. I lost 2 peach Drift rose bushes to Rosetta Disease last year. I loved those bushes as they were just loaded with blooms all summer long. I reworked their bed last Spring & after I was advised to not to put roses in again so soon, I decided to use mostly perennials. As I have an auto immune type of arthritis that mostly affects my spine, I knew I needed to minimize my effort & simplify things. To have the color I’ve come to enjoy from my beautiful Drift roses, I knew adding new annuals every year would require too much from me. The sun just beats this bed & the whole front of the house, all afternoon long so the plants would have to love the sun. As we have clay soil here, with help from my husband, we added some manure & other stuff to lighten up & improve the soil a bit. I started w/a front border of Cat’s Pajama in that bed. It didn’t do a ton last year but looks really good now & is blooming here in zone 7b (we’re in the burbs, about 30 miles north of Atlanta.) I didn’t know Nepeta is not a heavy feeder, so I’m glad I checked in to see today’s video. I added a Stokes Aster “Peachie’s Pick too. It bloomed beautifully & is coming back again. I added a concrete birdbath & the front side of it is ringed with 3 white Gara. Right now they are big & blooming like crazy. Toward the end of last summer I added some Aliums & they are sending up bloom stalks right now. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. I lost a Veronica & assume the cause was a particularly bad freeze we had here in December as we lost or had a few things nipped pretty badly. This year I added a Lupin to this bed & it’s starting to bloom now. I know I said I planned to use mostly Perennials but my Grandgirl, Bailey, & I did plant an 8-pack of Zinnias that are a pretty mix of colors & they seem to be taking hold well. I’m also trying my luck with Truffla Pink Gomphrena. I’ve taken your advice though & only put 2 plants in as their spot isn’t huge. I’m hoping to see it go crazy for me too. We’ll see how it goes. I have learned it’s better for me to plant just 1 or 2 of a “new-to-me” plant, & not 6 or 8. Especially when it comes to perennials. I learned the hard way after I’d chosen a less than desirable site for my new 8 PW Lavender plants. We had a very wet early Summer last year. After taking out the Drift & planting the Lavender, I saw just how much rainwater from a nearby gutter ran right into that bed. Yep, it drowned all 8 of my big PW Lavender plants I’d sprung for at a locally owned Garden Center. Lesson learned. 😩

    Planted one yarrow last year, in a small patch of a bed where the sprinkler hardly hits it. I love anything drought tolerant now,,and that thing has just ballooned into a gorgeous plant, blooming it’s head off. I am going to cut and dry the heads, but right now just enjoying a plant that does not require me to spray, water or pray over it. Have pink perfusion salvia, cat’s pajamas, and Walker’s Low catmint all of which I adore for the same reasons as the yarrow. I am especially aware of how plants can thrive without too much water simply because that is their nature, and these are some of them for sure. Water is expensive here and the process of watering, and the cost, both take away from the enjoyment of gardening for me. So, I am overjoyed to be able to plant beautiful plants and not worry about critters or water. As always, thanks for the wonderful advice, and you really cannot offer this kind of information too often. Plants are expensive today, and it’s nice to buy with some assurance that they will thrive in many different areas of your garden.

    I always giggle a bit when you talk about yarrow , they are weeds where I grew up in Alaska … I mean as any little kid I would pick the wild roses and wild geranium Monks hood etc. but even little it was the yarrow we would pull as weeds 😂 I love that. Depending on location what is a weed somewhere is the star of the garden somewhere else 🤩
