Oh I know about those meetings 😂 if we could only share all the details lol very interesting experience. And yes… the ZZ Top comments are literally daily and they never have the “feel” of compliment intentions. It’s more of just a lazy quick toss out
When my beard was longer I got, ZZTop, Duck Dynasty, and lumber Jack. A couple were definitely meant to be negative. The others, like you I think it just came to mind and they said it. 90% of compliments came from other guys, “dude, amazing beard”! What really surprised me is that many people felt free to make comments. Just an interesting observation. If I see a fat person or a woman with great hair, etc., I can’t imagine making comments freely. Why is a beard open game and other physical attributes not? I dunno.
I stay in the three-ish inch range with decent volume. I get lumberjack comments a lot. I think its mostly meant as positive. Typically comments from other guys. Whether positive or negative, those types of comments usually come from guys who probably dont view themselves as being able to grow such a thick beard themselves. Guys who can actually do it typically just come at it with straight compliments, "great beard," i think because they recognize there is a lot of discipline that goes into it.
@@katzsteel People feel so free to say whatever they want to a majority of the time. That's free speech for you though ya know! It can be disturbing and at times down right disheartening!
I remember being at a Walmart when I had 12"+ length on my beard and there was a Boomer in front front of me in full stereotypical boomer attire and he said "Forget to shave this morning?" It was weird because he didn't seem to say it as an insult or a compliment, it was like he encountered an alien life form and awkwardly tried to break the ice. Aside from the beard and my comfortable clothes there was nothing a boomer would find odd about my look.
@stephenshelton4267 Oh, man! The first thought that came to my mind was "does the boomer guy grow a 12" beard overnight when he forgets to shave?!" It's like out of all the comments he could've given, he chose the one that makes the least sense to any beard longer than a stubble, let alone a foot-long beard
Someone called me Zeus. That was my best compliment. Never really zztop or duck dynasty. I just get total amazement and love from everyone I interact with.
Thanks Dan, I dig the hat! I've got the ZZ Top, Jake from State Farm comments. I try to be good with my responses but it seems like the lazy low hanging fruit conversation starters lol. Sometimes when I'm asked what I'm wearing ( state farm commercial) I respond Khaki speedos 🤣 normally rolls into a good normal conversation after that.
I am up in the North East and always wear cowboy hats. The first compliment is always about the hat and then they compliment my beard as a nice combo. I am 10 months into my beard journey. Love the channel and God bless you and your family. Awesome video as always
Dan, great video as usual. I am 6’2” big shoulders and barrel cheated. I have always been big, size 18 shoes and really big hands. My body hair grew full and dark in elementary (not facial) and associational words have always been used, sasquatch, Chewbacca, and things of that nature. As an adult, I get more compliments than anything, and usually from men about my beard. Some women throw out Santa and Hagrid but that is about it. Many women will either compliment or talk about how dirty they think beards are.
Great video & food for thought! The green glow on the hat was cool! Added a nice effect. Recently at a monster truck tour the host called out in front of the whole tour, “look ZZ Top”, while pointing. 🤦♂️ Thank you Dan & keep it up!
Great video Dan. This is a great video and hit the nail on the head. Back when i started growing my beard over 10 years ago i was getting duck dynasty all the time. Now i get "nice beard " alot and i think its a truthful compliment. Its usually coming from someone that has just started the journey or has a shorter beard and probably can't grow it longer for some reason. Whenever I get a compliment I always say thank you and just keep walking. Even if it wasn't meaningful I don't let it get under my skin. Whenever I see someone at a concert or out and about with a big beard, I always say "nice beard brother". I think it does make you feel good when you hear it cuz it is something that you should be proud of if you're rocking one. 🤙
Before my beard got bigger, people would say, "Mr. Clean." Because I have a shaved head. Now that my beard is longer, I've gotten "you loose your razor" "ZZ Top". A little girl called me Santa she was probably 4 years old. All I could do was smile and wave.
I was in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee last year wearing a camo ball cap. A guy walks up to me and says " I didn't think I would see Duck Dynasty on this trip". I know my beard is much better kept than their beards but I took that as a compliment since he approached me and directed his comment straight at me and not yell it from across the parking lot.
Before military retirement when I only grew out my mustache once in a while I would get called Sam Elliot or Tom Selleck as a compliment to some amazing mustaches. With my beard I have gotten called a greek god by other amazing beardsmen that was an incredible compliment.
I don't get comments often, but ZZ Top is by far the one I've received most. One younger kid called me Grizzly Adams a few years back, I was surprised he knew the character. It really doesn't bother me at all.
I'm in Hershey, PA and the 2 questions I get the most are "are you a biker?" Or "are you Amish?" Neither is a compliment, I think just a way to connect, like you said. Before the pandemic I had a longer beard and I got a lot of duck dynasty comments, but they were more relevant then
Good video. Definitely the longer the beard the more comments received. ZZ Top is by far the one I hear the most and I take it as a compliment, just as when someone says, "Cool beard" or "Awesome beard". The DD guys fail in all areas of beard care/maintenance, and I rarely receive that semblance. It does open an avenue for dialog. I like that hat and was recently looking for one in that color. What brand is it? Keep up the good work!
Love this video Dan, it was very well done and tactful. I've never really grown my beard out long enough to be called ZZ Top, but of course the Santa comments make my day.
I get “ZZTop” and “Beard Meats Food Guy” all the time and in winter when I wear my flannel I get Paul Bunyan. I don’t always agree with comparing my beard to them but I just look at it as those figures are iconic so the person that called me that name is saying my beard is an iconic image and stands out and I am totally ok with that! Like you have said before Dan. When I walk into a room I want someone to see my beard first! My biggest name at work is Beardo though and I just roll with it.
I get a few comments as well and being that I'm 6'5" and on the heavy set side, Hagrid is one I have heard a few times. If the body language or tone indicate something other than a complimentary statement, I usually smile and say thank you and go on about my business. My favorite 1 liner reply to compliments is "I didn't like it at first but then it grew on me." Bit of a "dad" joke I know but it's usually well received or goes over their head which is hilarious for me
You threw me off with the cowboy hat. I like it, Dan! As far as comments about my beard the one I get the most, mainly from women, is about the salt and pepper look that is developing as I grow older. Women seem to like it. Men look mostly and the only thing that pops into my head is that they wish they could grow a beard like mine.
@@DanCBearded I usually get the ZZ comments from guys that have zero facial hair or minimal, and they are usually younger. I have also started getting compliments from the older guys with white beards lately. Like you said, color is a big talking point.
ZZ Top, every day. Not meant as a compliment or a diss in my opinion, just a connection like you said. Gets old really fast, but whatchu gonna do? Cowboy hat is looking good, sir!
Dan, My beard is not long enough yet this go around. However, last time I had one it was about 10-12” and I would get those comments fairly often. I never even cared or thought about how it was sent, I always took it as a huge compliment.
When I had a longer beard, I got the David Letterman or Santa comment. I took it as a compliment because although I never liked David Letterman, I do like his beard. ZZ Top are probably the most recognizable famous celebrities with long beards so it's just a reference that's easy for people to make. Hopefully, eventually people will be saying, "Hey, are you trying to grow a Dan C?"
If I had a dollar for every time I was called ZZ Top I would be a rich man lol. I’ve never considered whether it was an insult or not, but great food for thought.
Hahahaha Dan, I can't make this stuff up. I was listening to this on the drive in to work, and lo and behold, a man with a white ZZ top beard crossed the road as I'm stopped at a light. I normally wouldnt yell anything, and I didnt, but it was kinda tempting 😂😂😂
My mother in law told my wife that shes got a man sized Knome in the house. 😂 (my wife collects all sorts of knomes) I dont mind being called a Knome. They are cool 😎
I've never had a long enough beard for someone to relate me to either of those things 😅 I do feel like it is a tongue in cheek compliment when people use it though. Interesting topic Dan! 👍👍 That's cool but unfortunate about the mini guitar Dan! Love you too man!
I’ve been called ZZ Top a couple times once my beard reached about 10 inches or so. I always take this as a compliment and felt they meant it to be positive, not negative. Maybe I just don’t read into it 🤷🏼♂️ 🙂
No.1) I loved the Duck Dynasty erra and ALWAYS figured it opened up a better positive acceptance for us super long beards. No. 2) Yes, am called ZZ very frequently by men & women alike. To me it is just a reach out of people relating to me in a neutral way favoring the positive. My fav., a well over served girl at a carry-out pizza counter ( yikes, worse mega-beard-food) leaned over in my face with her elbows on the counter, and very quietly said " do you realize the self determination it takes to keep a beard like that?" No.3) To me #1 comment from all people, "How long did it take to grow that?" HaHa, at 74 years old, I always tell them " it's older than you!" No.4) Great channel Dan. "Our Ambassador"
I love the cowboy hat! 💯Please, wear it more often. My pet peeve beard association is the Santa reference. "hey Santa, where's your suit?" ME: "at your Mom's house!" 😁
I was once called a dictator. The fact I am Hispanic, was wearing a camouflage jacket and carrying a clipboard didn't help. The comment was much more of how we playfully tease each other.
When I started growing my beard back in 2006, I was alone in a shaved men world and I was commonly referred to as "Grizzly Adams" by my bosses in a friendly manner. I view all the zz tops, duck dynasty, Gandalf as ice breakers or at least an acknowledgment of the beard and its place in our societies. What I like the most is the acknowledgment from other bearded mens you come across. The "nice beard" gentleman’s nod as I call. There is a mutual respect that comes from other bearded fellas that knows what it takes to grow a nice beard. But I always answer nicély to those who make those zz top and all other bearded celebrities association. A smile or a little laugh cost nothing and they’ll make a difference for some. Stay bearded and nice :)
Agreed with it all! I just love thinking about why that is okay for comments and ice breakers, but almost all other natural physical features are not, especially in a jabbing kind of way. Again though, I always respond with a welcoming and positive tone
There is one thing though that takes honest effort from me to be nice about it: people, most of the time random people 50/50 male/female who will ask you to pet it/touch it/feel it… how innapropriated is that on many levels ? Best answer I found to this date is "can I pet/touch/feel your hair/face ? Exception for my wife and kids, they get a lifetime permission to play with my beard if it’s what maies them feel better at that time lol
I get "viking" sometimes, but I am 6' 290lbs with a shaved head and a decent amount of gray in my beard. To your point about connection and the way our brains work, I did some research on stereotypes for a graduate class that has some relevance. Basically it boils down to our brains like to group like things as we encounter them in the world. We then constantly reclassify those things if we learn more about them. This is a gross oversimplification, but you get the gist. I think sometimes people just verbalize what they are processing as a way to connect.
I have gotten ZZ Top mostly, I just smile, nod and make sure they know that I took it that way. (Compliment) Even if they didn’t intend it to be a compliment, you can’t take away the happiness my beard brings me, so I’m taking it as a compliment and thanking you. You didn’t even get a choice in the matter. 😂
Working in the ER, I'm in constant interaction with strangers. I frequently get the ZZ Top, Duck Dynasty, Biker (6'2" with tattoos), or worst of all is the, ", I guess you don't get a nurse, you get a lumberjack." These are always followed my the "how long did it take you to grow that?" question. I think at least half of the time it's meant to be funny, it break the awkwardness of I'm suddenly doing invasive things with this stranger. Other times, I'm certain it's demeaning. I tend to not respond/react to the comments in general and just state, "nope, that's not me but I am Eric your nurse, and since you're concerned, I shaved just before coming to work." I then move on, knowing I didn't lie because I had shaved my cheeks and by my ears. I know that's rather long already, but definitely want to point out what @katzsteel said about the sense of feeling free to point out beards in this fashion as opposed to other human appearance flaws/attributes. The only other attribute that I can think of that out society so brazenly points out, is those who cannot helps back the comments about pregnant women (or assuming pregnant). I should from this point forth just start adding an honest compliment about the person who makes these comments just to see it I get a different reaction after. Anyhow, great discussion topic Dan. You always get the ball rolling well on these.
Same thing for myself "ZZ top!". Not a good or bad thing, but usually is an ice breaker. Non-bearded people often ask after that what I do to maintain it, my routine and for how long I've been growing it. 🤷🏼♂️
Hey, interesting stuff. I guess I've heard the ZZ and DD comments countless times, along with other comparisons and adjectives. I don't think I've ever been offended or thought it was a put down. In fact, I've always kind of enjoyed the attention that my beard was getting. Perhaps a few of the comments were intended as an insult, but I never took it that way.
I have a 13 inch pure white beard. The number one comment I get is Santa Claus. The number two comment I get is ZZ Top I live in New York City, where there aren’t many long beards, but there are a lot of dogs, much too many peoples surprise. The dogs are walked daily on a leash. Not frequently, but from time to time, a dog will spot me and can’t take it’s eyes off me. Even after the dog and its walker passed me, the dog will continually look back over its shoulder to see this white bearded human. Ronald from New York.
I get these from my mother in law and many others totally can relate as well as cast away or cause I have a beard I’m a bumb or to lazy of a person and can’t shave it it’s weird man depending who says it ZZ Top got the same hat so the cowboy hat works perfectly in this video dude amazing love learning about the brain as well ❤❤❤
I got my first "Hey Santa!"... it was from my son's BF's mom. She was just yanking my chain. (How long since you've heard THAT expression?) But I thought it was funny. Looking forward to seeing what other calls I get thrown my way.
With the length of my beard and it is mostly white, I get Santa Clause, David Letterman, and Jack Black. I agree that it is an ice breaker. I don't take offense from it.
i have recently started a new job, I am a buyer for a construction company, so I dont spend a lot of time with the guys on site. I recently found out that my nickname is ZZ Top, I said "thanks guys, what a compliment". Not sure if it was meant in a positive or negative way, but I dont mind.
The only thing I would say (about your beard) if I met you and didn't know you is "great beard, my brother". I'm always complimenting guys with beards (on their beards). Always!
I do this all the time and I get it sometimes before I get a chance. I always take it as a compliment. I don't even care if it wasn't said that way. I don't let people get under my skin. @yobabybubba great beard brother 🤙
I got several comments here. At work, there is a guy who looks like a straight copy of me, only slightly younger. I'm 48, and he's 28. However it looks like about 7-8 year difference in age. We work in the same department, and both have beards that range from 7 inch to 12+ inches, depending when we decide to trim. Because we do big trims. Anyway, we get called ZZ Top when we let them go longer. When we trim to anything under 9 inches, we get called Twins or Father and Son. Different interaction here. My ex wife, and no negative here. We split on fairly good terms, 20 years ago. I've since remarried. Any way, I've only had a beard for 4 years. My ex hasn't seen me in about the same amount of time. We ran into each other at a function for our sons company. My son is 22 years old for reference and he's a machinist. Anyway, as soon as she sees me she says "I can't decide between Jesus Christ and Father Time". I responded with "You mispronounced the best looking man you ever been with" She says "Yeah, yeah. I remember. You could talk the pants off a Nun". I feel the work interaction is banter, and some mild picking. I feel the interaction with my ex wife was mostly the same
It's kinda the same thing as women with big families bringing kids out and people saying "you have your hands full," i can't tell you HOW many times i hear that when i go out with the kids. I usually just say "yup" smile and move on with my life. People with big families are often looked at strange because its not a common thing anymore. Maybe its the same way with longer beards
I've definitely gotten ZZ Top comments often. I do think it's usually just a small talk statement, like "crazy weather today", but the beard is so majestic, it tends to be the main focus of discussion. And similar to talking about the weather, I think many people just have to call out the beard, as a big beard is less common to come across, but they just don't know what else to say, and have no intention of a deeper conversation, so they just toss out the most familiar beard reference. I believe it's just an observation that we have big beards, instead of a compliment about the beard. However, i do take it as a compliment, as it's clear the individual notices i have a big beard. Most people don't have much of an understanding past beard length, so size is all that really matters in the moment, where most of us probably take more pride in how we care for the beard. But, back the the small talk idea, typically they aren't interested in learning about the care side, so i just know they consider my beard legit enough to make a comment, and i like that. i do hope more men will listen enough to explore their beard, with some advice, but for some reason, most just don't want to take the leap. Main take away, we have glorious big beards.
Months ago on my hike, one of the cyclists thrown out the word "wizard" while passing me. My beard hasn't yet reached below my chest and has been partially graying. Even though the people here are commonly friendly, some are still dumb and immature.
I get the ZZ Top comment occasionally. I get Amish quite a bit. It's always a friendly burn and doesn't bother me, since I do have a long line of Mennonite family heritage. Amish is at least a little more fitting since I shaved my stache!
When i started growing a beard i had longer hair and people would call me Jesus.. Nowadays i don't get called names, but a lot of people ask me to touch my beard..
I get the ZZ Top thing a lot and I don't mind it at all. I take it as a compliment because ZZ Top has been around for decades and are well known and liked for the most part.
I see the comments as more of a comparison than anything. Not a compliment or an insult. Just something in pop culture that most people can connect the beard to.
I get those “comments” if not every other day, then once a week. Now I say “comments” because sometimes it is hard to tell how it is intended, ether being compliment or insult. I also get, “lumber jack, Abe Lincoln (even though I do have a mustache, maybe it’s because I’m always honest with people lol), and I get called Amish, which I’m not married, and again I do have a mustache so not sure why but that’s a whole other conversation with the Amish community. Sometimes it does feel like an insult, but I always try to find the positive intent behind the comment and take it as a compliment. Especially these past weeks at work and even just hanging with friends. I’ve been known to a lot of customers at work as “that guy with the really big beard”, and even hanging with friends, they say they look for me, and all they see is “the big beard”. Again, I look for the positive intent behind all comments, regardless of how it’s initially intended. So I always just smile and thank them for the comment.
Once in a while a genuine compliment happens. No Zz, or DD - LOL. NYC. Very Jewish looking (it's the nose sadly). 69 y.o. now, short guy and a bit heavy. 6 to 8 in max. beard. In some T's ,bottom of tattoo sticks out of sleeve. Most often, day to day religious Orthodox Jews avoid me (being so plainly 'secular etc.). The one on 'mission' in streets (Brooklyn Hasidic) pursue to try to get me to pray in garb in their 'Mitzvah tanks" vehicles. Some Muslims think I may be. A couple, who might have been riders, on the subway coming into 'city' from Coney, asked me about my Harley.
Well pardner, I think people are just trying to start a convo as you stated. No malicious intent involved. I've not had any comments good or bad directed toward me. In general, it just pays to be kind, as you so often do. As an aside, I tried the solid beard wash bar this morning and I like it. I'll be sure to add it to my rotation. I just want to be sure I care for it properly.
You're right, people call things that reflect well known persons. Me personally, I do like a big beard but I agree, ZZTOP isn't the example I want to follow when it comes to both beard style and maintenance. I also don't want people to think that because I have a beard like that, I must have a similar lifestyle. Cause that's what people conclude who don't know me. That's why I'm still struggling to find a long beard style which people won't associate with that lifestyle. However, I see it as a compliment if they mention Greg Berzinsky. I just don't know how to achieve a style that looks just as, what most people call, a business beard like he does. I know your opinion on that last bit Dan, that's why I said "most people" cause I assume you know your opinion isn't the same as most people.
Being from Louisiana and living on the West Coast, God knows I've gotten the Duck Dynasty term alot- and while I certainly respect and appreciate the Robertsons, I am NOT that kind of person- and mine looks way more taken care of! Oh, and great trivia, the drummer from ZZ Top is the only one who shaves and his name is Frank Beard!
I've seen some hilarious "man on the street" interviews where they ask women if they think Lizzo is beautiful, and of course they agree and say a new nice things. Then the interviewer will tell one of them that they look like Lizzo and then they get an earful or a slap to the face! BTW I recently heard she's been working hard and has lost a lot of weight.
I'm 6 ft 5 and have a 7-inch red beard. I hear big red and redwood a lot. Those two along with many others related to my height do not bother me. The one that bugs me is ginger LOL. My beard is the only red hair on my body, but I usually wear a hat so I understand where it comes from. I usually try to turn it around and get a laugh out of it by saying by saying I'm a day Walker I'm only half Ginger. I tan, and I don't have freckles......I am the blade of the ginger world LOL.
I’ve kept my beard at medium length, but aside from unquestionable compliments, it has received 3 comments that stand out: “Is that a Jew Beard?” “Are you a Priest? - Your beard reminds me of the Blessed Solanus Casey,” and “That’s a Hippie Beard”. And one recent “Hi, Santa!” - That had to be the beard; I don’t have the build.😀 But your topic has me asking you to do a video on Long beards: Why do some men pursue length? What, generally, is the reaction of others, bearded or not? Why do some men known for their long beard (or even for a particular length or look) cut back to short or stubble or even medium, and never seem to consider returning to great length? Also, just what is a long beard anyway?
I feel like since most of us here put a lot of thought and care into our beards, it feels a bit frustrating. There’s a clear difference in what you do vs someone who just lets it grow wild without purpose. But then I remember the average beardless person likely doesn’t pay as much attention to the overall appearance of the long beards they see other than the fact that they’re “long.” So they just toss out whatever comes to mind. Like you said, it’s not necessarily a positive or negative comment. Just association. Now I have had straight up racist comments when my beard was longer given my background. Not often, but some people are jerks.

Oh jeez lol
Before my beard got bigger, people would say, "Mr. Clean." Because I have a shaved head.
Now that my beard is longer, I've gotten "you loose your razor" "ZZ Top". A little girl called me Santa she was probably 4 years old. All I could do was smile and wave.
The little kid ones are the cutest!
Good perspective on how he approached it!
Sorry I was in RUclips jail for 24 hrs,but great video I get compliments alot of places I love it!
Thanks man!
Before military retirement when I only grew out my mustache once in a while I would get called Sam Elliot or Tom Selleck as a compliment to some amazing mustaches. With my beard I have gotten called a greek god by other amazing beardsmen that was an incredible compliment.
Agreed fully, those mustache comments are meant to be compliments and have a better “feel” to them
I don't get comments often, but ZZ Top is by far the one I've received most. One younger kid called me Grizzly Adams a few years back, I was surprised he knew the character. It really doesn't bother me at all.
No bother here at all either. I just love thinking about the “why”
I'm in Hershey, PA and the 2 questions I get the most are "are you a biker?" Or "are you Amish?" Neither is a compliment, I think just a way to connect, like you said. Before the pandemic I had a longer beard and I got a lot of duck dynasty comments, but they were more relevant then
Spot on!
When I was younger and I had a black goatee and because I’m bald some people called me Anton LaVey
I had to look up who that was!
I’m not sure the brand, sorry! It’s in. Different state than me right now lol
I take it as a compliment when someone says ZZ-TOP in my direction.
That’s a great approach!
Love this video Dan, it was very well done and tactful. I've never really grown my beard out long enough to be called ZZ Top, but of course the Santa comments make my day.
You embody and welcome the Santa reflection, because of the welcoming vibes you natural give off. Love that!
I would never think you are ZZ Top. He is way too cooler than you. 🤪
I hate when people are way too cooler than me
@@DanCBearded it's the pits!
He plays the guitar better too!
BFG certainly plays guitar better than me!
@@DanCBearded no offence, I mean, we ARE talking about Billy Gibbons! HA
Great way to look at it!
I know you listen very well,so you can hear it if it’s positive or negative that is how I judge that.😊❤️❤️❤️🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Exactly!! You can hear intention with tone. And I loveee analyzing people
I got "Hey Mandy Patinkin / Saul from Homeland" (when Homeland was big) a lot for a while. Now my beard is a lot longer than that
Oh interesting!
ZZ Top and Duck Dynasty would be considered a compliment as far as I'm concerned!
Thanks for sharing!
I get a few comments as well and being that I'm 6'5" and on the heavy set side, Hagrid is one I have heard a few times. If the body language or tone indicate something other than a complimentary statement, I usually smile and say thank you and go on about my business. My favorite 1 liner reply to compliments is "I didn't like it at first but then it grew on me." Bit of a "dad" joke I know but it's usually well received or goes over their head which is hilarious for me
Love the dad joke lol
I get Santa with my white beard....skinny santa😅
Oh I bet
Shaved head before a beard, “Vin Diesel “, “Mr Clean” lol
Ahhhh, I bet!
Fun topic! How about, “gettin ready for huntin season”, “did you just give up”? I’ll just enjoy the really serious positive compliments.😊.
Oh absolutely!
Thanks man!
I take it as a compliment
Me too!
Excited to hear your thoughts after you have watched the video with some food for thought.
@@DanCBearded I usually get the ZZ comments from guys that have zero facial hair or minimal, and they are usually younger. I have also started getting compliments from the older guys with white beards lately. Like you said, color is a big talking point.
Absolutely JP, I can see all of that!
I get Garden Gnome 😆
If you do get the ZZTOP thing.
Just tell them “that’s right and you know every girls crazy about a sharp dressed man” 🎸
Love it!
ZZ Top, every day. Not meant as a compliment or a diss in my opinion, just a connection like you said. Gets old really fast, but whatchu gonna do? Cowboy hat is looking good, sir!
Thank you!
Dan,
My beard is not long enough yet this go around. However, last time I had one it was about 10-12” and I would get those comments fairly often.
I never even cared or thought about how it was sent, I always took it as a huge compliment.
Good approach!
ZZ Top is a compliment, they are great guys, Duck Dynasty is a major insult because of the type of people they are.
Thanks for sharing!
I’m a big fan of ZZ Top, I have a welder that works on my truck and trailer and he calls me ZZ
Absolutely
When I had a longer beard, I got the David Letterman or Santa comment. I took it as a compliment because although I never liked David Letterman, I do like his beard. ZZ Top are probably the most recognizable famous celebrities with long beards so it's just a reference that's easy for people to make. Hopefully, eventually people will be saying, "Hey, are you trying to grow a Dan C?"
Letterman has an amazing beard!! And I agree, it’s the easy reference
If I had a dollar for every time I was called ZZ Top I would be a rich man lol. I’ve never considered whether it was an insult or not, but great food for thought.
Yeah, it really doesn’t matter either way, but I just enjoy thinking about this stuff
Hahahaha Dan, I can't make this stuff up. I was listening to this on the drive in to work, and lo and behold, a man with a white ZZ top beard crossed the road as I'm stopped at a light.
I normally wouldnt yell anything, and I didnt, but it was kinda tempting 😂😂😂
haha love good timing!
I always get I look like uncle Sy or ZZ Top all the time and I take it as a compliment or I look like a biker
Excited to hear your thoughts after you have watched the video, with the food for thought!
My mother in law told my wife that shes got a man sized Knome in the house. 😂 (my wife collects all sorts of knomes) I dont mind being called a Knome. They are cool 😎
That’s an interesting one!
I've never had a long enough beard for someone to relate me to either of those things 😅 I do feel like it is a tongue in cheek compliment when people use it though. Interesting topic Dan! 👍👍
That's cool but unfortunate about the mini guitar Dan! Love you too man!
Thank you buddy!
I’ve been called ZZ Top a couple times once my beard reached about 10 inches or so. I always take this as a compliment and felt they meant it to be positive, not negative. Maybe I just don’t read into it 🤷🏼♂️ 🙂
And no need to read deeper
I've gotten that several times lol.
Compliment or insult, it's annoying. Like, stop.😂😂😂
haha I hear ya!
My fav., a well over served girl at a carry-out pizza counter ( yikes, worse mega-beard-food) leaned over in my face with her elbows on the counter, and very quietly said " do you realize the self determination it takes to keep a beard like that?"
No.3) To me #1 comment from all people, "How long did it take to grow that?" HaHa, at 74 years old, I always tell them " it's older than you!"
No.4) Great channel Dan. "Our Ambassador"
Love and appreciate that!
I love the cowboy hat! 💯Please, wear it more often. My pet peeve beard association is the Santa reference. "hey Santa, where's your suit?" ME: "at your Mom's house!" 😁
I appreciate that buddy!
😂😂😂
I was once called a dictator. The fact I am Hispanic, was wearing a camouflage jacket and carrying a clipboard didn't help. The comment was much more of how we playfully tease each other.
haha the other context clues are hilarious there
When I started growing my beard back in 2006, I was alone in a shaved men world and I was commonly referred to as "Grizzly Adams" by my bosses in a friendly manner.
It makes sense! Goes back to actual tribalism and safety came with comfort of knowing who someone belonged to
Most the time here in Maine I get " Do you own a harley " ?
I get that too!
All the time I get the ZZTop or mountain man. And mine isn't as long as yours Dan. Haha
I believe it!
I have been called ZZ TOP! No big deal for me.😊
Absolutely
I have gotten ZZ Top mostly, I just smile, nod and make sure they know that I took it that way. (Compliment)
Even if they didn’t intend it to be a compliment, you can’t take away the happiness my beard brings me, so I’m taking it as a compliment and thanking you. You didn’t even get a choice in the matter. 😂
For sure!!
The times I have received comments, they are always positive. Family on the other hand….
Ouch!
Loveee the feedback and food for thought!
lazy comment, conversation starter! then I in turn tell them WE SELL BEARD OIL! win, win! 🤝
You know it!
Same thing for myself "ZZ top!". Not a good or bad thing, but usually is an ice breaker. Non-bearded people often ask after that what I do to maintain it, my routine and for how long I've been growing it. 🤷🏼♂️
Agreed fully!
That’s the best approach!
That’s super interesting!
I get ZZ Top all the time!! Cracks me up
Same same lol
I get these from my mother in law and many others totally can relate as well as cast away or cause I have a beard I’m a bumb or to lazy of a person and can’t shave it it’s weird man depending who says it ZZ Top got the same hat so the cowboy hat works perfectly in this video dude amazing love learning about the brain as well ❤❤❤
I appreciate it brotha!
ZZ Top actually kept their beards pretty well. Duck Dynasties more like....Duck DyNasty!
But did ZZ Top actually?
I got my first "Hey Santa!"... it was from my son's BF's mom. She was just yanking my chain. (How long since you've heard THAT expression?) But I thought it was funny. Looking forward to seeing what other calls I get thrown my way.
That’s a great mindset!
With the length of my beard and it is mostly white, I get Santa Clause, David Letterman, and Jack Black. I agree that it is an ice breaker. I don't take offense from it.
That’s a great approach!
i have recently started a new job, I am a buyer for a construction company, so I dont spend a lot of time with the guys on site.
I recently found out that my nickname is ZZ Top, I said "thanks guys, what a compliment". Not sure if it was meant in a positive or negative way, but I dont mind.
Great approach and response!
I still get the Duck dynasty all the time
That one burns more lol
The only thing I would say (about your beard) if I met you and didn't know you is "great beard, my brother".
I'm always complimenting guys with beards (on their beards). Always!
That’s my approach as well!
I do this all the time and I get it sometimes before I get a chance. I always take it as a compliment. I don't even care if it wasn't said that way. I don't let people get under my skin. @yobabybubba great beard brother 🤙
I’m being called Santa these days
Do you plan to do any type of Santa stuff?
@@DanCBearded nah, it’s just the kids I work with early in the day! I’ve been Santa for over 40 years, since the birth of my firstborn in 1983
Good morning
Morning!
I responded with "You mispronounced the best looking man you ever been with"
She says "Yeah, yeah. I remember. You could talk the pants off a Nun".
I feel the work interaction is banter, and some mild picking.
I feel the interaction with my ex wife was mostly the same
Loveee your response to her! And agreed fully. It’s banter and mild playful jabs, but not compliments
I can totally see that!
I can totally understand all of that. Well thought out comment! Good comparison with the “weather” convo starters
Months ago on my hike, one of the cyclists thrown out the word "wizard" while passing me. My beard hasn't yet reached below my chest and has been partially graying. Even though the people here are commonly friendly, some are still dumb and immature.
I do get wizard and Hagrid from time to time
I get the ZZ Top comment occasionally. I get Amish quite a bit. It's always a friendly burn and doesn't bother me, since I do have a long line of Mennonite family heritage. Amish is at least a little more fitting since I shaved my stache!
Great approach!
When i started growing a beard i had longer hair and people would call me Jesus..
Nowadays i don't get called names, but a lot of people ask me to touch my beard..
I get a lot of older women asking to touch the beard as well. I normally don’t mind
@@DanCBearded With me it is mostly drunk people asking it.
And i also don't mind
I get the ZZ Top thing a lot and I don't mind it at all. I take it as a compliment because ZZ Top has been around for decades and are well known and liked for the most part.
Do you feel like the comment is an association with being well liked and popular or just simply associating beard and you? (Genuinely wondering)
Like I'm not supposed to recognize Billy Gibbons' iconic 1961 Gibson Les Paul, Li'l Red?
Yessir, you know it!
I see the comments as more of a comparison than anything. Not a compliment or an insult. Just something in pop culture that most people can connect the beard to.
Agreed fully
Love the ZZ Top comments because my goal was "to have a beard like ZZ Top".
Duck dynasty not so much idk why.
Dude… hate to tell you, you have FAR surpassed your goal lol
@DanCBearded thanks.
Unfortunately, I've only gotten sasquatch and harry and the hendersons references.
Lazy remarks. Step your game up people!
Finding the positive intent is the best approach, no doubt!
Some people feel threatened by your self confidence to be you when rocking a big beard.
That’s very true
The genuine compliments are great! Just being thoughtful means a lot
For sure can be used as a convo starter, when conversation is possible. Often times it’s in a pass by moment being yelled out though
For sure! And berzinsky is a legend
Agreed fully!
I find that type of human psychology so interesting!
Redwood is a dope nickname!
And one recent “Hi, Santa!” - That had to be the beard; I don’t have the build.😀
But your topic has me asking you to do a video on Long beards: Why do some men pursue length? What, generally, is the reaction of others, bearded or not? Why do some men known for their long beard (or even for a particular length or look) cut back to short or stubble or even medium, and never seem to consider returning to great length? Also, just what is a long beard anyway?
Those are all great wonderings! I will write it down on my idea list. Thanks Leo!
The racist ones are so infuriating and just lazy
