Examining the era of the "development driver" in NASCAR in the mid-2000s, one that led to huge busts like Todd Kluever, Blake Feese, Reed Sorenson, David Stremme, Dario Franchitti, the success of Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, and Kasey Kahne, and how impatient teams were with their young talent. Also takes a look at the open wheel invasion of NASCAR, the role the 2008 financial crisis recession played in creating a lack of new faces in the sport in the early 2010s, and how NASCAR was able to improve things for young prospects with rule changes limiting the amount of "Buschwhacking". These guys became the biggest NASCAR busts.

JPM coming to nascar was also due to Ron Dennis saying that he’ll sign him and Kimi Raikkonen. Then Dennis signing Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton to the team and JPM left for NASCAR.
I think Lewis was signed after JPM leave. Didnt he?
@@PlatapusPhucker More than likely, but he was growing frustration with Dennis on not signing a deal. Aidan Millward has a fantastic video on this topic that was mainly focused on how Kimi almost bankrupted Lotus Renault in his return
While his cousin is having his breakout season, I'm really sad how James Buescher's career ended.
Yeah I thought he could’ve been a solid Cup driver. He didn’t have the funding to keep going
@JakeSimRacing and then when he returned for a truck race a year or two ago he crashed out on like lap 2
God is coming soon Repent
@@snuffsternetworkit was the opening lap. they stacked up

I feel the teams rushed WAY too many folks into series they weren’t ready for . And it still happens to this day .
Nascar needs to change the minimum age for each series and minimum years for each division before moving up. I think this will help weed out some of the "flash in a pan" drivers.
@@OldsmobileCutlass1969Va minimum age is 18 .
Yeah it’s something that needs to be changed. Give certain drivers at least 4-5 years in the mid tier (Xfinity) to help develop their skills and when the time is right, give them a shot full time in Cup
The Early 2000's was the "Next Jeff Gordon" Era Cup owners were looking for the next Jeff Gordon, they wanted someone who could get into a Cup car and be competitive, just like Jeff Gordon did. Except, they forget his Rookie season where he crashed..a LOT. They also overlook that he ran 3 seasons of Busch series with Ford Factory support. So you had all these Development Teams whose job was to foot the bill while these kids tore up equipment trying to learn to run in NASCAR. Some of them were given bad breaks, but some of them were brought in at the totally wrong time. It's, basically, a generation of drivers who were screwed over by the Cup teams.
Stephen Leicht joined my iracing series last season, seems like a good guy, definitely fast. Rubbed a couple people the wrong way and he ended up dropped from the series, but it was cool while it lasted.
Interesting. iRacing is great for getting to race with real world drivers
He was one of my favorite drivers in the Busch/Nationwide series.
Someone not mentioned much is Danny O'Quinn. He ran full-time for Roush in 2006 in the Xfinity (then Busch) Series. He was pulled from 2 races to allow David Ragan seat time to prepare to replace Mark Martin in Cup. Despite winning Rookie of the Year in 2006, he did not get to come back to Roush full-time in 2007 because sponsorship could not be found. That year Roush was mainly running his Cup drivers either full or part-time in the Xfinity Series probably because sponsors wanted that just to add to the issue of Buschwhacking getting out of control in the series during this time. O'Quinn eventually disappeared from NASCAR.
I would not say they all were a bust. They all had circumstances beyond their control with impatient owners by not giving the young talent seat time like they do now or we would have seen Logano, Elliott, Larson, Blaney, Dillion, Suarez, Bell, etc being added to the list, the sponsors who wanted cup drivers, etc.
Open wheel does not mean F1 or Indy cars, but USAC drivers. Jeff Gordon, Robby Gordon, Kasey Kanhe, Tony Stewart, Dave Blaney World of Outlaws), Kenny Irwin JR, etc drove midgets, Silver Crown and Sprint cars.
Let's not forget Robbie Gordon was also self funding a majority of his Cup races.
In fact, there's been waves of open wheel invasions with the initial one having NASCAR drivers racing the Indy 500.
I remember watching that Rouch racing reality T.V. show.
Good times.
I also remember a ABC network NASCAR with Kevin Harvick and I think Kenny Wallace. That was like what their life is like at home, sponsor stuff and of course behind the scenes on race days.
So many people got shafted because of the impatience of owners and sponsor woes. So many people that could have developed into being someone, but just needed a few seasona to get going, got the boot after only one, or sometimes less than one season. William Byron and Bowman got multiple years to develop and season, but Danny O'Quinn, Todd Kluever, Erik Darnell, and so many others didn't. So sad.
I agree. A lot of the more recent guys did get the time to improve.
It's funny how you described Jack as impatient (which is true). There was something about that in 2000, Jack originally wanted Kurt Busch to wait for Cup full-time until 2007.
It did work with Kurt, and he trusted Mark’s opinion of Kenseth to bring him in. He even had a 16 year old Kyle Busch signed so Jack had seen young talent work for him and assumed it would keep going. Unfortunately not everyone will be as talented as those guys.
@@JakeSimRacingthey're definitely the exemptions which were few and far between. Even Benny Parsons convinced Jack to bring Greg Biffle.
I always thought that Casey Atwood was going to be big in the Cup series, but he went nowhere.
I'm a little surprised with no mention of Marcos Ambrose or Christian Fitipaldi driving for PE. And Kurt boosting Front Row's status.
You bring up Roush's Gong Show, but I'm surprised you didn't mention the two drivers chosen to replace Busch and Biffle in Trucks for 2001: Chuck Hossfeld and Nathan Haselau. Those two didn't even make it to the season halfway point.
Absolutely. Roush definitely tried to get new guys in his team but most of them didn’t even last a season
@@JakeSimRacing At least we got 16-year old Kyle Busch.
The skid from 08-13 really was caused by drivers being rushed
I’m confident Scott Speed, Stephen Leight and Danica Patrick would have had far better careers, Speed really was one that I’m now 100% sure would probably be still competing today, possibly with a a few wins under his belt
2:10 oof. Poor Feese and people involved
Luckily everyone was ok! Definitely was a silly mistake
I just found your channel and I wanted to say that I think you did a great job at researching, putting together, and narrating this video. This is a complex subject, with a ton of information to cover. You did a fantastic job putting it together so it was understandable and gave a very clear picture of things. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
I appreciate it a lot, thank you
JPM coulda been better but CGR hurt his career
I agree, think he would’ve won some races with Hendrick or Gibbs
@@JakeSimRacing underrated cup career tbh but Ganassi equipment held him back same can be said bout Reed Sorenson even maybe Jamie Mac
The man was full of road rage, and it would get set off at most every race. That was the thing that made him fun to watch and if he got pissed off enough, he was subject to take it out on the Jet air dryers during caution and burn down the Speedway. He is the man that needs to be at the front of the line during all of these recent so-called protest, blocking the highways. I would love to see this for real. Go JPM and FJB
@@randynix9805 ooooook
Blake Feese's record is 3 IRA Sprint Wins, 2 ARCA Wins, 1 WoO Sprint win and one All Star Sprint win. Hardly compares to Kyle Larson
I'm pretty sure I had a Stephen leicht die-cast back in the day
That car looked so cool
While these story's are sad just think about how current young stars are gonna be. Their are only so many good rides with old veterans ready to retire soon. So the next generation might have to go their whole career's in trucks or Xfinity because of how full the cup series is
Time to do one of these on ryan preece
He's not a hack
Show some respect 💪🙄
Todd Kluever just finished 2nd by 34 points in the BADGER Midgets series in Wisconsin this season.
Nice! Glad to see he’s still racing. I think Roush gave him the short end of the stick
Somewhere after 3:30 that 06 car pit stop shows dude running over a cone and bending the front end splitter. They didn’t even have a sign bro?
Interesting video, though it's a shame that you didn't go into the 2014 plus range. Also I may have misheard how you were phrasing it but Larson, Chase, and logano have all been cup champions that were born after 1990
Yeah, I figured cutting it off at 2014 because that's when we got real rookies again. Yeah I did say that drivers born in 1990 and after won 4 titles, so Logano's 2, and Chase and Larson. Thanks for watching, appreciate the comment!
@@JakeSimRacing ah okay so I must have just heard what you had said wrong. I do think that a video on 14-23 would be interesting as well. Even though 17/18 of the like 40 some roy contenders are still currently in cup there was still 3 years in which the rookie of the Year isn't even in Cup
@@oakshrorgaming Yeah I have some different ideas coming soon!
19 drivers born in the '90's have won. You forgot Trevor Bayne.
True. I missed him in the list
This video is probably the best about this subject. I can't put my finger on why it's different (in a good way) tho
I appreciate it
Good video, but wouldn't Brad Keselowski also be counted alongside Joey Logano as successful drivers from the Buschwacker era?
Danica was the worst of the worst no wins and absolutely wreck almost every race
Good video bro I tried this format but my voice didn’t work you didn’t a good job
Great video man! Subscribed 😎
I appreciate it a lot!
I remember the day's when a cup driver could also win the Busch series championship... mark Martin won a few championships
If Mark ran a full Busch Series (either during his Roush or Hendrick eras) season he probably could have won at least 1 championship in that series. Or in the Truck Series.
@@stephenholloway6893 I thought one year he actually ran both and actually finished first in the championship because I remember he only had to start the race or something...
It definitely felt like he did back then, he ran at most of the Cup companion races
@truckercowboyed2638 Yeah my mistake he did ran 1 full Busch season back in 1987 but he ended up 8th in points for the Busch but he only ran 1 Cup race that year. He never ran a full Truck Series season though 2006 was the closest in that series. Never won any NASCAR championships but he is a multiple IROC champion (5 time overall) and won 1 ASA championship. Although I still say that if he ran a full season in either his Roush or Hendrick seasons in either the Busch or Truck Series he probably would had at least 1 championship there. Even after he gave up full time Cup racing. (Though maybe not after he left Hendrick.)
At one point Kyle Busch looked like he'd win all 3 series in the same year!
slow down the commentary a little... more dramatic pauses. it feels too fast, nice video though.
I swore David Stremme was next
Bubbles Smollett needs to go back to driving gocarts
No
Just subbed
I appreciate it a lot! thank you
In F1 your lucky to get ½ a season.
