This movie was so much better then a bugs life it embraced politics, showed the reality of war, a bit vulgar in its language for kids but it had a message to give.
I must’ve watched this 50 times when I was young, and obviously as a 6/7 year old you rarely catch the subtleties or underlying narrative of anything.. I’m going to have to watch this again. What a film!
I do like how the general is more then just a "bad guy" he truly thinks he is doing what is best and I like the little detail "It`s a shame there are some good officers there." meaning he cares for the men but he knows they have to go in order for the greater good in his mind. They dont make bad guys like they use to.
Actually, it looks like he is sending them to war because they are loyal to the queen, not him. I didn't notice this in my childhood, but if you see the movie again it's quite clear.
When I was a little kid I used to think that the drunk scout that talks about Insectopia and Cutter were the same character. Now I see that is actually not the case.
Fun fact! The bug that Z denied to drink from the anus of is a bug used as a source of sugar for ants in the insect kingdom! They are so highly valued that ants will protect them from predators and even assist in moving them to places where food is rich and plentiful so that they can continue to supply the ants with a delicious treat which they even share with their fellow ants back at the colony.
Seeing this as an adult, I now understand why the General sent out the soldiers most loyal to the queen. It was to get rid of the ants that would stand up against him against his coup de tat. The bit where he says its a shame there are fine officers there, I take that as he was just putting a show to colonel cutter that the General is sympathetic to keep his #2 under his thumb. Towards the end where General is giving his speech, we can see cutter is suffering from guilt as well as when cutter walks away ordering the soldiers to seal the caves. These little details are amazing
Also the general mandible worked a deal with the termites' queen. When the ants marched on the termites' nest, it was an obvious ambush. Mandible also was pissed when 1 ant returned, Z. I could never figure out what the benefits were for the termites.
@@2012tkdstudent ah ok. Thats a good thought but on the termite side, I can't see how this would benefit the termite queen by eliminating her own soldiers since she's already the top of her chain of command. Unless we assume you're right and the general and termite queen made a deal, the only thing I can see a deal between the 2 is the general might give some territory privileges to food sources to the termites in exchange in helping him over throw his own queen.
You know mandible May be pure evil enough to send spiller ants suicide rides and sent workers to their watery graves. But he kind of makes Hopper from a Bug’s life look like a kind hearted gentleman.
