Fantastic video! You just solved my dilemma of what I should use the wasted space under my shop countertop for! Excellent to see you back Dan. I was almost worried about you!
Thanks, and I totally agree. Although with that said, it's also nice to be able to look at something and feel pride at how nice it looks. It's a trade-off, I guess. 😄
Yeah! Finally some who is as messy as I am! I think I will probably make one of those carts. I may vary the design slightly as I have quite a bit of scap plywood laying about. Thanks for sharing!
True, simple is almost always better, but sometimes you want to try fancy too. I mean, I'd rather "make things to make things", then "make things" any day. 😄
Great build! When you have a base that is wider than the sides of the structure on top, you can use that vertical space/face as a storage space as well. some hooks, cleats, dowels, velcro straps, etc can give you the ability to hang things on the sides, and they won't hang out over the edge of the base (unless you make them).
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and i think it is beautiful in its simplicity. Furthermore it does the job it was intended to do and I like the openness of this design.
Thank you for sharing. I bought a couple of those organizers a few weeks back when they were on sale. I’ll save this vid and let you know how the one I build turns out. God bless.
I was excited to finally see a new video from you. I need to get some of those organizers, and this caddy you built was a great idea. Excellent work, and I hope you are doing well.
This is exactly what I wanted to build next. I’ve been using those ULINE bins, until I filled them all up. Then I bought dividers, which worked for awhile, even though they never stayed in place. But now those are all full too. I’m gonna start moving away from Phillips screws soon so I knew I needed a different storage solution. Your video not only gave me some good info about building this kind of cabinet, but also some great info on the storage bins themselves. You saved me a ton of money. I had no idea Harbor Freight had these! I was about to drop $40 per for big-name storage boxes. Thank you!
It’s great to watch clever people. Thanks for the time putting your videos together. I made the plane blade scraper a couple months ago. As you predicted, very useful.
Glad to see another Newbie Dan video and love the simplicity of what you did. The only thing I'd have done differently is to space them closer together. I mean you have the space, so why not make use of it. You could get 12 of them in that same space. The good news.... you didn't use glue, so if you need more organizers, you can still make use of the space without starting over. I built mine like a wall cabinet (yes, and hung it from the wall) with two columns each of which holds 7 of those organizers and two of the bigger/deeper ones.
I have watched this twice now. Worth it both times. The great thing about this is that it is basic in nature. One can then customize it at will. For instance, sides to hang tools on, or put french cleats on. A back to stiffen the case up if necessary. I used to glue everything, but I am finding out that good screws are enough to hold most things together. Commercial kitchen cabinets don't use glue and they last for years. Thanks for a great video.
Thanks, and I'm glad it's helping you. I really want people to learn that they can design simple things themselves, then, as you said, start adding bells and whistles as needed. And yes, I totally agree that good screws, along with wood that doesn't strip out easily, are plenty good for a lot of things. I'm just now taking apart something I made over 3 years ago, because I need to fix a problem. I'm glad I didn't glue it. 😄
Simple is best. I usually pass over more complicated sites, as I am beyond my time in life to be “stressed” making high end stuff. Enjoy your presentation too... Thank you.. 👍
Nicely done! This will inspire me to get rid of the cans, jars & plastic screw cases that take up shelf space. I’ll use my label maker on the boxes to identify what’s what. Thanks again for all your time and effort to make these very helpful videos.
Greetings from a hardware hoarder.! Great idea for projects outside the shop. End up trudging back several times and then not putting the stuff away after use.
Always enjoy your vids, especially as a 'constant newbie WW' myself. LOVE your simple, concise directions and functional project...especially as my shop is always going through evolutions.
Those harbor freight ones are identical boxes sold elsewhere in red and grey, but compared to a box that looks nearly identical but with a stiffer clear lid from Stanley (and a red one from Craftsman at Lowe's, but it's been sold out for months), I found that the bottoms of these cheaper boxes are slightly thinner plastic and would sag in the middle when suspended on the ends, if some of the little inner bins were filled with something heavy. Then, if you turned it upright to carry it like a case, there would be a gap, and small things like washers or brads/finish nails would slip into neighboring bins. While it would indeed use much more wood, I'd suggest that it's worth the upgrade for longevity, if the boxes are more filled up (like your carriage bolt box). I do genuinely love your idea though for the open side walls, though, to save materials!!! I'm borrowing that idea. :)
Thanks, and that's a good point. It'll be easy enough to add something to support the bottom(s) if I need to. Might even make for another video, sometime in the future! 😄
I came across your channel this morning! You are an excellent teacher! You explain things as you go and don’t act like you know everything. I have some new projects on my list now. I love your humor. Keep up the great content!
Great video Dan. I need to get some more of those containers. The project came out great. I always say, "It doesn't have to be pretty, just practical". Keep em' coming.
Thanks for the non woodworking tip of standardizing on bolt sizes (1/4"). Great little nugget. Also - great simple project and video to go with it. Helps me remember we don't need to over complicate things for shop projects. And I like the idea of the HF cases. I didn't know they existed. Now I'm looking forward to getting all of my nuts and bolts etc out of recycled peanut butter and spaghetti sauce jars!
Awesome - I was hoping the bolt size thing would help someone. It's made my life a lot easier, that's for sure. As for the simple project, I think a lot of us are afraid to try building things, because we think we have to know more, or need more talent. We need to get over that fear, and create or own projects - and not worry about how others would have built them! 😄
Nice build. I like the reminder of the benefits of standardizing. (In this case, screws and other hardware to quarter inch sizing.) It reminds me of your wood scrap organizing video, where you said you mostly use plywood, I think? This approach really helps cut down the chaos. Let me just say that I am not there. Maybe if I had heard you 40 years ago.
Hey Dan, Welcome back. As a fellow SoCal woodworking newbie myself, I've been enjoying your videos from the start. So Congratulations on your 100,000+ subscribers. I really enjoy your simple and cost-effective approach to woodworking projects. This project is a good example of that approach. I'm hoping to see more of your "Budget Friendly" projects real soon. Thanks again, Ray (Carson, CA)
Thanks, Ray. I'm not sure how cost-effective I am with most things, but when I started doing the measurements for having full shelves, sides and back, I discovered that's a LOT of wood! 😄
I love all your videos. You have such a great presence and are so positive all the time. And you're very clear about what you're doing. Thank you from a true newbie.
I made something really similar to this. Its great for fasteners and small parts. Also if you have a 3d printer, you can print extra bins in exactly the sizes you need.
I excitedly watched as soon as I noticed a new video from The Newbie! Congratulations on the subscribers, I’m glad to be one of them. I’d like to see your build video of the bins themselves. I try supporting American made whenever I can so I’ve never shopped HF and I’m sure any bins would be nearly impossible to find with USA on them. Thanks again for the detailed, humorous content, please keep it coming!
Thanks! And yes, I don't think we could find American-made plastic bins like these. But I'll bet there are some people who make some really great-looking higher-end products.
I have been looking at several plans for this and I like yours as it allows me to build it was some scrap wood I have laying around and not have to go out and purchase a bunch of $$$ wood. Thanks
Well built and functional. You probably could have gotten 2 more in if you would have made less room between the cases. I like the idea of all one size (1/4 - 20) in one case. I have about 6 of those cases now and so I feel a project coming on. Thanks.
Thanks! And yes, I thought about making them closer together, but I wasn't really sure what it would be like until I built it. I can always pull off the side and back rails and move them - one of the advantages of not gluing things. 😄
Nice quick project. Possible improvement: Instead of strips across the back you could have used a single sheet (or several scrap pieces) of 1/4" plywood. Not only is this less work, but also provides rigidity against sideways sheer forces. And it makes the total depth 1/2" less, which may be more friendly to your appliance door.
Nice this was the first video that showed once I searched! Great idea and design. If you want you can add sides to keep out dust. I might build mine the way you did and add sides if needed.
Awesome! Yes, I thought I might add sides, but never ended up needing them. Also, you can make the distance between the bins smaller than I did, if you want.
Congrats on 100K. Nice build. I did something similar a couple summers ago. I made out like a bandit stocking up on hardware when OSH went out of business (man, I miss that place).
I like the idea of the outfeed height. Makes rack more useful. Also double the bottom plate and put the wheels under your uprights, over time the bottom will start to sag as you put more weight on it. Use lag screws and this will support significantly more weight. Since you did not glue this, you can easily take it apart, move the tray rails closer together and get about 3 more cases in it for the same height, or shorten it for the outfeed option, still having the "Junk" shelf on the bottom. I love the idea of standardizing the 1/4 tray. I might add a 3/16 also, for the times you just need something smaller. I could also see a nail tray, or trays (maybe even a different rack altogether) with different sizes nails in each drawer, ie 16 penny different lengths one drawer, finishing nails another etc.
Great video!! I’ve been interested in those bins. Now I may grab some! Glad you’re coming out with more videos. Can’t wait to see what other tips you have for us!
Cool, thanks for the inspiration. I think, I‘m going to build one or even two of these and add some ball rollers in the top plate to use it as an outfeed/support table for the table saw. Only thing I noticed, you seem to have „wasted“ quite a bit of space. Looks like there would have been room for at least one more case.
Thanks, and good idea. Yes, I did waste some space. I wasn't sure how much space I needed, so I figured I'd take a stab at it and see how I liked it. It was good enough for now, so that's why I didn't change it. 😄
The animations make the process easier to follow. My problem is space I don't have a garage, cellar, or shed when I see those that do I tend to salivate.
Thanks for the comments about the animations. I feel like I can explain things better with them, but I rarely hear anything about them in the comments. I'm not complaining - not at all. If I do things right, people don't notice the details. But that's why I appreciate your comment. 😄And I totally get not having the room. And the salivating part - there's just something about organizers and organizing things in general (even though I'm generally un-organized). My wife has boxes for everything, even boxes for boxes!
Glad your back. Hope all is well with you and your family. I love your videos.
Thanks! And yes, all is well. 😄
As always, clear, complete and useful. You are a real asset to this community.
Wow, thanks! That means a lot to me. 😄
Fantastic video! You just solved my dilemma of what I should use the wasted space under my shop countertop for! Excellent to see you back Dan. I was almost worried about you!

Nicely done Dan. On projects like this, i would use the cheap Harbour Freight dollys on the bottom. Bottom and casters all in one.

Will be copying your idea for some Stanley sortmaster junior boxes. Thank you for giving me the confidence.

What a great build thanks for sharing it with us!

Great video Dan. I need to get some more of those containers. The project came out great. I always say, "It doesn't have to be pretty, just practical". Keep em' coming.
Thanks, John. Practical is good. And actually, it's not as ugly as I thought at first. It's kind of growing on me. 😄

Always like your videos, Dan.
Thanks! I appreciate it! 😄
Thinner rails, packed like sardines. Perfect-O
Yep, you can definitely do that for sure. Have fun!
Congrats on getting over 100,000 subs. Always enjoyyour videos an thanks for sharing.
Thanks! I appreciate it! 🙂And sorry for the late reply.
Doing fine. GREAT video!!!
