Watchmen is possibly one of the most underrated movies, people went in expecting it to just be an action packed superhero movie, but it was simply so much more. Incredibly written, one of the best movies ever.
Uploaded this years ago because I couldn’t find this version online and happened to have the audio on an old mp3. Thank you guys for all of the love and comments!
Has it got a name? I can only find the the more "rock/metal" one. ETA: I just realised they have two versions The end is the beginning... And The beginning is the end....
There is only one band to make this song and that's the Smashing the Pumpkins. The original version was on The Batman and Robin Soundtrack. A remix was made and used with The Watchmen trailer and possibly its soundtrack
This movie is so fucking underrated. I rewatched it the other day and it is honestly one of my favorite movies of all time. And I love that it stays so close to the graphic novel.
+Bassist1996 Yep, I was unfamiliar with the Watchmen when it hit theaters, so my buddy let me borrow that graphic novel before I checked out the movie. Definitely did stay very close to the source material.
I agree and liked it when I first saw it in theatres. Then I saw the full extended cut, which is 3 hours and 35 mins long, and that made me like it even more. Same with Batman V Superman, theatre cut was ok but confusing. Ultimate cut made sense and made me like it a lot. If only the studios would let Snyder complete a movie without going cut crazy the end result might be better.
Bassist1996 aside for a few things- like the midget crime boss being small and instead should have been fat. And Dr Manhattan’s nuclear bombs going off at the films climax should have been an alien/mutation/thing “attack” staged completely by Ozymindias
Bassist1996 the film misses nearly every subtextual element of the source material, what’s more it entirely missed the whole point. I just chalk it up to Snyder plain and simply not understanding.

Great Pumpkins, I saw them live "free" here in Italy in a small town next to my little home country near Modena, just a couple of years before this single came out; I knew only "Gish" back then, their super GREAT debut album I still love today in 2024 -what a fantastic record❣❣❣ CIAO! 👍🏻🎸✌🏿

You should get into black metal then. I mean, the genre covers stuff that sounds like this too, except the vocals might sound like distant crows or ghosts crying. It can get pretty atmospheric and gothic and dark. Or... it can be super energetic and the vocals are understandable, even if extreme lol. Honestly, this song would've been my gateway into metal, but ... I'm discovering it in 2022 haha
I never heard of watchmen before but the trailer with this song made me want to watch it, then I forgot about it lol and when I was at a flea market I saw it for $2 and got it and holy shit, I've been looking for it on blu-ray since then lol awesome movie
Such a perfect choice for a trailer song. The darker, B-side of a song made for Batman being used for a movie about flawed, morally questionable superheroes.
"The beginning is the end is the beginning" is the perfect song for Watchmen. The title itself summarizes the movie perfectly. But "The end is the beginning is the end" also fits the Batman and Robin movie perfectly. It's amazing that 2 completely different movies can share seemingly different songs that are essentially the same song.
The first time I heard that The Pumpkins did a song for the watchmen, I was like "Nah, that's not they're style, they couldn't pull it off...". I was wrong, they fucking nailed it! thank you so much for existing to give us your beautiful music, Billy.
Saw this movie just a week ago for the first time since I was a kid. Such a beautifully crafted graphic novel film by one of my all-time favorite movie directors.
best comics movie ever, im so sad this is SO underated, probably cause of unknown comics or not major actors, but this is absolute masterpiece, all characters are very interesting, there is no funny jokes like in dc/marvel universe movie, its dark, realistic, a lot of cool historical stuff combined into story, just amazing stuff
FriskyDingo0347 I think you meant both songs are on the soundtrack, because this one, and the one we're commenting on, are both the same. O_o This conversation seems like it's a lot older than what it really is.
I actually went to see them on Thursday... I forgot that I would have loved for them to play this song but they didn't. They did play The Crying Tree of Mercury though. Equally powerful in my opinion.
If this movie had been released 10 years later, right after the MCU hype peaked, it would've had much more impact. It would've blown people's minds, subverting all of the themes that made the MCU so endearing. It addresses the tough questions that the MCU ignored about what it means for superheroes to "fight for the fate of earth and humanity". How could heroes, who dedicate their lives to saving a complicated species that constantly sabotages itself, end up anything other than utterly naive, insane, or numb?
Exactly, Watchmen was the right movie made on the wrong time, if it was released after Avengers: Endgame, in 2019, would have been much more impact and would have changed the superhero genre in the movies, like the graphic novel did for the superhero comics. But I also feel like Nolan's The Dark Knight, Logan and Joker do that a little bit.
It's ok. Let this generations kids enjoy MCU until they see Infinity War, get their mind blown there, get a commercial copout with Endgame, then drop Watchmen on them (in a guided manner and NOT the modern one obviously).
"The world will look up and shout : Save us! And I will whisper : No " I love this part. From the moment I've heard it in the trailer I connect it with this film.
M Errington You maybe right. It is not listed as one of the tracks in the official soundtrack. Whereas in the Batman and Robin soundtrack, it is the very first track.
@@djeff37a No, it's the last track. The End is the Beginning is the End is at the beginning of the soundtrack, and the Beginning is the End is the Beginning is at the end.
The DC fan will shout "Give us the Snyder Cut of Justice League !", and I'll whisper "No". - Warner Bros. Edit : Nevermind, can't wait for this movie to finally be released. Would prefer to see it in theatre though.
90s were sheer perfection for me as well. I mean, right down to location, weather, the land that wasn't developed yet, I have a few regrets like not exploring more of my own state at that age. But school, girls, friends, teachers, vibe, music, my first car, everything was literally... perfect.
It's on the Batman and Robin soundtrack from 1997. Never watched the movie so don't know if it's in it, but this is the crown jewel of that movie's soundtrack
It still angers me greatly how vastly unappreciated this movie is. Watchmen is one of my favorite books ever. And the movie was as faithful as it could be. yes they changed the means to the end but the over all narrative is still the same!
That's so true the book and the movie were so realistic and similar. The movie was long but it had a good cast and story. My favorite along with Sin City.
The same could be argued about Man of Steel, but ultimately just because a movie does enough things right on paper doesn't mean the execution is there, such is the shortcoming of many of Snyder's works.
I loved this movie, it wasn't simplistic, it had depth which was really awesome. One of my favorite hero movies, the darkness and complication in the plot was brilliant.
I agree! The graphic novel gets all this praise by everyone yet the movie, which followed the comic almost word for word gets criticism. I just don't get it. Watchmen in my opinion is one of the best super hero films ever made.
wcw2793 Because it's a shitty concept, and it's obvious Batman will win, despite Superman being the obvious victor, simply because Batman's more popular.
Δημήτρης Κιαπέκος The Dark Knight Returns is a pretty crappy story, despite its (really undeserved) praise. I don't get the hype behind it, it's nowhere near as good as Watchmen or other graphic novels of equal caliber, plus, Frank Miller is a crazy asshole.
One of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen in my entire life. The fact that it was so faithful to the graphic novel and the character’s personality were tied so close to graphic novel made it so much better in a film perspective. Zack Snyder made a risky ballsy move making this graphic novel into a movie. Hence why he is one of my favorite filmmakers out there
I saw them perform this live not even 2 years ago now in Sacramento, summer of 2018. Was one of the best surprises of the show and one of the highlights of my life.
"I’ve walked across the sun. I’ve seen events so tiny and so fast they hardly can be said to have occurred at all, but you… you are a man. And this world’s smartest man means no more to me than does its smartest termite". - Dr. Manhattan
I was looking for this song forever. When Watchmen first came put in '09, the song caught my attention with its gloomy atmosphere and eeriness. Thank you so much!
Send a heartbeat to The void that cries through you Relive the pictures that have come to pass For now we stand alone The world is lost and blown And we are flesh and blood disintegrate With no more to hate Is it bright where you are Have the people changed Does it make you happy you're so strange And in your darkest hour I hold secrets flame We can watch the world devoured in it's pain Delivered from the blast The last of a line of lasts The pale princess of a palace cracked And now the kingdom comes Crashing down undone And I am a master of a nothing place Of recoil and grace Is it bright where you are Have the people changed Does it make you happy you're so strange And in your darkest hour I hold secrets flame We can watch the world devoured in it's pain Time has stopped before us The sky cannot ignore us No one can separate us For we are all that is left The echo bounces off me The shadow lost beside me There's no more need to pretend Cause now I can begin again Is it bright where you are Have the people changed Does it make you happy you're so strange And in your darkest hour I hold secrets flame We can watch the world devoured in it's pain Strange Strange Strange
I loved this song when I was a kid, listening to it on the Batman & Robin soundtrack. I was so happy to relive that when the Watchmen trailer came out. Still amazing and better than the fast version IMO.
Same here, and these kids also fail to realize that Smashing Pumpkins made both versions of this song for the B & R soundtrack, they didn't exist beforehand. These songs will always belong to B & R
Also, for anyone who likes this song and is not familiar with the Smashing Pumpkins check out the other soundtrack music produced during that year(s) with a similar sound- Eye (Lost Highway soundtrack) and the soundtrack from the movie 'Stigmata'. If you really want to get deep check out the soundtrack of the movie Ransom.
Even when I was a kid and listened to this version and its "alter ego" (the end is the beginning) on the very same Batman & Robin soundtrack, I was shocked that this one didn't get any attention at all. Even the verses are different for crying out loud! (With exception to the chorus of course) But both show great poetic aspects of the hero's dilemma in different ways. I wish the movie they were originally for lived up to how good both songs were, but thankfully at least Watchmen recognized this.
Thank you so much for uploading this. I've loved this version of the song since seeing the trailer all those years ago. Still one of my favorite tracks of all time
Rorschach’s journal, October 16th, 1985 42nd Street: Women's breasts draped across every billboard, every display, littering the sidewalk. Was offered Swedish love and French love, but not American love. American love; like Coke in green glass bottles, they don't make it anymore. Thought about Moloch's story on way to cemetery. Could all be lies. Could all be part of a revenge scheme, planned during his decade behind bars. But if true, then what? Puzzling reference to an island. Also to Dr. Manhattan. Might he be at risk in some way? So many questions. Never mind. Answers soon. Nothing is insoluble. Nothing is hopeless. Not while there's life. In the cemetery, all the white crosses stood in rows, neat chalk marks on a giant scoreboard. Paid last respects quietly, without fuss. Edward Morgan Blake. Born in 1924. Forty-five years a comedian. Died 1985, buried in the rain. Is that what happens to us? A life of conflict with no time for friends, so that when it's done, only our enemies leave roses. Violent lives, ending violently. Dollar Bill, The Silhouette, Captain Metropolis, we never die in bed. Not allowed. Something in our personalities, perhaps? Some animal urge to fight and struggle, making us what we are? Unimportant. We do what we have to do. Blake understood. Treated it like a joke, but he understood. He saw the cracks in society, saw the little men in masks trying to hold it together, he saw the true face of the twentieth century and chose to become a reflection of it, a parody of it. No one else saw the joke. That's why he was lonely. Heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up. " Man bursts into tears. Says "But, Doctor.... I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.
"There's going to be a war between hope and despair. Love and apathy. Faith and disbelief. When I was outside of time, I felt their presence. I tried to see who it was. I couldn't, but I know they're out there. And they're waiting to attack again for some reason. I can feel it. Even now Barry... We're being watched." - Wally West - DC Universe Rebirth
Almost 20 years ago when I had bought this CD, I imagined an icy void stripped from any life when listening to this song. It has been reminding me of Dante's Inferno when the traveller crosses the icy plain with the sinners frozen into the ground.
The Watchmen is by far my favorite "Super Hero" comic/movie because of it's realism. Especially for being made at such a popular time for comics. Everybody always asks me "What's your favorite Super Hero?" because evidently they "love" comic books and Super Hero movies, yet when I respond with Rorschach, they just give me a blank stare. I then have to explain that the Avengers, Batman, Superman and all of the other popular Super Heroes aren't the only good Super Heroes out there. Anybody else feel my pain?
That's true i explained the whole watchmen comic and they still look at me like im some loser. I love anti heroes The Punisher, Dark Knight,Marv from Sin City and in this case Rorschach. Heroes with a dark side that don't just give a shit.
Rorschach is my 2nd favorite hero Spider-Man being the 1st, but my favorite Anti-Hero is The Crow, which surprisingly all the 'comic book' fans/experts don't know who the fuck he is, I like the whole dark theme, even the movie is very dark and dreary and has a depressing vibe to it which fits the whole theme of the hero, its sad people only read Marvel and DC, and suddenly become the master of comic book heroes, I mean shit there are so many good heroes/villains not written by Marvel nor DC.
Yeah, take Batman for example he keeps bringing villains to Arkham only for them to escape and kill again, while The Punisher, The Crow, Rorschach, etc. Kill them which means they can't escape to kill again Anti-Heroes are the ones I'd call real heroes.
years later and this song still gives me goosebumps, tears... the composition is so good... start to finish, hitting all the highs and lows... i love it 😎
This is the Batman and Robin version. Both versions were recorded for Batman and Robin and were released as the opening and closing tracks for the soundtrack.

@@marciofilho2137 and Amazon’s Invincible
That is a very good question.
It would still have been a terrible movie.
It's ok. Let this generations kids enjoy MCU until they see Infinity War, get their mind blown there, get a commercial copout with Endgame, then drop Watchmen on them (in a guided manner and NOT the modern one obviously).
"The world will look up and shout : Save us!
And I will whisper : No "
I love this part. From the moment I've heard it in the trailer I connect it with this film.
"I'm not locked up in here with you, you're locked up in here with me!"
- Rorschach
The best thing in the movie was Rorschach and The Comedian!! Best casting choices ever!!
Can't argue with that.
Cameron Wright what movie? batman and Robin?
How To Man are you stupid???
I first heard this on the Batman and Robin Soundtrack. Then the Watchmen came out and it was revived as the theme for that movie.
Daryl J I don't think it was ever actually played at any point in the Watchmen movie. It was the song on the trailer.
M Errington
You maybe right.
This song gives me goosebumps
Fricken watchmen was ahead of its time and still relevant in our era, with that i read the GN with this on loop
The DC fan will shout "Give us the Snyder Cut of Justice League !", and I'll whisper "No".
- Warner Bros.
Edit : Nevermind, can't wait for this movie to finally be released. Would prefer to see it in theatre though.

Oh, they'll give it to us. It'll just take then 26 years like with the Richard Donner cut of Superman II
🥺😭
This song is beyond. A perfect Tribute to all jewels of underground comic-book masterpieces.
This music is, one of the biggest reasons why I miss the 90s so much!
90s were sheer perfection for me as well. I mean, right down to location, weather, the land that wasn't developed yet, I have a few regrets like not exploring more of my own state at that age. But school, girls, friends, teachers, vibe, music, my first car, everything was literally... perfect.
Not a 90 kids but i get it, everything is a clutter of stuff nowdays
Best trailer ever, this goes perfectly with the images.
Such a great graphic novel...the movie came out as well as it could considering and this song just NAILS it!
Couldn't agree more with that
It's on the Batman and Robin soundtrack from 1997.
I think its awesome, as good as TDK but critics are just snobs
"We don’t do this “thing” ’cause it’s permitted. We do it because we have to. We do it because we’re compelled."
this song just MAJESTIC!
I love them, and this is one of their best
Dr Manhattan: Does the New 52 make you happy?
Reader: No- (*Gets vaporized*)
Dr. Manhattan: He was so strange.
HAHAHAHA
In the end, nothing ever ends.
I really hope this song gets used in another Batman film or for one of the trailers for Batman vs. Superman.
Dylan Burns How do you know?
wcw2793 Because it's a shitty concept, and it's obvious Batman will win, despite Superman being the obvious victor, simply because Batman's more popular.
***** Actually it's gonna be based on a comic,The Dark Knight Returns,so obviously it's not a matter of popularity.
Δημήτρης Κιαπέκος Well, it's still a shitty concept.
Hence why he is one of my favorite filmmakers out there
This song sums up "Watchmen" perfectly.
Probably the most menacing song I ever heard in my life. But at the same time it makes me feel powerful.
I saw them perform this live not even 2 years ago now in Sacramento, summer of 2018. Was one of the best surprises of the show and one of the highlights of my life.
Simply outstanding work from Corgan and clan. Deep, complex, and haunting. I think of this song out of the blue now and then, and I have to hear it.
The only good thing to come out of Batman & Robin (was the OST)
Whats the soundtrack called?
+Gucci Quique it is the reverse order of this, "the end is the beginning is the end"
And Poison Ivy
didnt george clooney come out yet?
This rendition of it's still better.
Thanks for uploading this version. It's my favorite one.
The directors cut is the most faithful adaption from print to film ever. EVER.
Is it the one it lasts 215 minutes?
Can't beat Sin City, It's impossible.
The Ultimate Cut really beats Sin City. I mean, even the pirate history is included.
MrJmaldo05 dude I bought it over the summer, and I loved it.
if we're talking just comic books, yeah. Including books though? No.
I remembered this one and had to piece together bits and pieces of it and the source. So beautiful.
Send a heartbeat to
The void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
For now we stand alone
The world is lost and blown
And we are flesh and blood disintegrate
With no more to hate
Is it bright where you are
Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain
Delivered from the blast
The last of a line of lasts
The pale princess of a palace cracked
And now the kingdom comes
Crashing down undone
And I am a master of a nothing place
Of recoil and grace
Is it bright where you are
Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain
Time has stopped before us
The sky cannot ignore us
No one can separate us
For we are all that is left
The echo bounces off me
The shadow lost beside me
There's no more need to pretend
Cause now I can begin again
Is it bright where you are
Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain
Strange
Strange
Strange
What's the point of this, you can just look the lyrics up. Or is this the best thing you can say about the song?
@@keeljones2962 umm its here probably so you can hear the song and read/sing along at the same time like I just did 🧐

This really takes me back. I love this movie so much. Thanks for posting this.
I loved this song when I was a kid, listening to it on the Batman & Robin soundtrack. I was so happy to relive that when the Watchmen trailer came out. Still amazing and better than the fast version IMO.
The best DC live action film hands down
One of the best comic films ever put to screen.
Everyones talkin about Watchmen but i was jamming this when it was on the Batman & Robin soundtrack, silly kids
Me too. I was kid when Batman & Robin came out. Awful movie, great soundtrack.
Same here, and these kids also fail to realize that Smashing Pumpkins made both versions of this song for the B & R soundtrack, they didn't exist beforehand. These songs will always belong to B & R
Someone else remembers... good!
Yep! Kids don't know.
we’ve all watched that terrible movie but why would we reference that one over this great one?
honestly, this version of this song got me thru some dark times in my life around 2009-2010. sounds weird but it did! truly grateful.
I understand. It has for me as well.
I loved the Watchmen movie. This song is originally from the Batman and Robin soundtrack (1997); it was so good then & I still love it
Was just about to write the same thing. You deserves more thumb ups, you!
An absolute quality tune.
Corgan has a haunting voice
I wish there were other songs out there with a pretty similar sound but this is just amazing🔥
I’ve been searching for this song!!!
Thank you!!!

wrong. Tonight a comedian died in Gotham
+The ZombieMan wrong. Tonight a comedian died in metropolis
+The ZombieMan i get that refference
Sick song! Gives me the chills everytime
Thank you so much for uploading this. I've loved this version of the song since seeing the trailer all those years ago. Still one of my favorite tracks of all time
Watchmen is a masterpiece.
Arguably the greatest comic book film ever made.
Such a delightfully dark song
" I could be stuck in the gutter Or dangaling down from a tree... ". Good job, Bully.
Came here after the Snyder Cut!!!! Awesome!!!
"But doctor the man said, I am the great clown Pagliacci."
Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.
I fucking love that line so much
Rorschach’s journal,
October 16th, 1985
42nd Street: Women's breasts draped across every billboard, every display, littering the sidewalk.
I am Pagliacci."
Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.
This song fits excellent for Zack Snyder's Justice League cut
I knew this song since the late 90s when it first came out!!! It's the last song on batman n Robin soundtrack. I've always loved this song!! 😎😎
"I did the right thing, didn't I? It all worked out in the end."
Daniel Anyamele "In the end? Nothing ends, Adrian.
Nothing ever ends."
- Dr. Manhattan
Rorschach is my 2nd favorite hero Spider-Man being the 1st, but my favorite Anti-Hero is The Crow, which surprisingly all the 'comic book' fans/experts don't know who the fuck he is, I like the whole dark theme, even the movie is very dark and dreary and has a depressing vibe to it which fits the whole theme of the hero, its sad people only read Marvel and DC, and suddenly become the master of comic book heroes, I mean shit there are so many good heroes/villains not written by Marvel nor DC.
werewolf914 Cool we both don't go for the "good" guys of superheros. We like the anti heroes.
Yeah, take Batman for example he keeps bringing villains to Arkham only for them to escape and kill again, while The Punisher, The Crow, Rorschach, etc. Kill them which means they can't escape to kill again Anti-Heroes are the ones I'd call real heroes.
Alex Lasker don't forget about Jackie estacodo from the darkness comics
My favourite comic and my favourite superhero movie. Didn´t realized that it has this fantastic gem in its OST.
Love these dark song with this sort of tone

the watchmen version of the song is way better than the batman and Robin version of this song more somber and gives more mood and feeling
This is the Batman and Robin version. Both versions were recorded for Batman and Robin and were released as the opening and closing tracks for the soundtrack.
