Each member of Led Zeppelin was a master of their craft ♥️ I can’t think of another band from any era that I would rather listen to than them 🎸🎤🎶♥️🔥 Their music sets my soul on fire 🔥 🔥🔥
many think this is a "break up " song your comment " must be a soldier , being called off to war " fits this version perfectly , it was brought out in 1969 , the Vietnam war and Tolkien was a great influence to Robert Plant , if not all of the guys . Imagine growing up with them great intellectual commentary . Bro ...peace
Not really it`s an album of covers, played very well granted but covers all the same. The only 2 originals on it are Good Times Bad Times and Your Time Is Gonna Come.
@@brianshockledge3241So what if they're covers? Whitney Huston covered Dolly Parton's record "I will always love you" and nobody knew for decades. There are countless brilliant covers like that one, and Led Zeppelin's were also totally impressive.
This song (well most of their songs) have a lot of personal meaning to me and a lot of history in my life. This song (as I see it) is about a man that has a powerful wanderlust and even though he is content and loves this woman he is with, his spirit is restless and the road is calling him once again. He assures her his intention is that he will return for her someday to settle down, but for now he has to go back on the road.
I was 19. In 1969, i bought this album off of a drug store display, thinking it was old or a bad seller or something. No idea what a Led Zepllin was but only $1.99.... I asked my friend who worked there, he had no idea. Another guy in the store said he's heard it's pretty good. Took it back to my 1st apt, that early afternoon. Put it on the turntable, headphones on....next thing I know it's dark and my roommate is home from work. A glorious, lost afternoon of musical escape while trying to heal from a broken heart. And I'd just lost my student deferment for the draft and learned my mom was dying of cancer. WOW ! Love ya MOM 50 yrs later, thinking of you this mother's day 2020. Yes you too Yolanda 😁
This band stops you in our tracks. Suddenly you listen and become aware of life. They are a musical band, but bring out so much more than music when you listen to them.
I'm not sure of the month this album came out, but for me as a teen, I want to say in the Fall. Or I just associate it with Autumn, because a lot of the songs have a haunting sound about them that I absolutely love. And more than 55 years later, I still listen to this album (best with headphones, as Led Zep fans know) and still get goosebumps.
As a young teen girl, need less to say they became my favorite new band. Think I was 14 or 15. Anyway, nobody will ever take my zeppelin from me.lol. mrs.ward
I fell in love with this album not long after it’s release. We laid on our friend’s waterbed, tripping on Pink Mescaline. It was amazing. That’s what I think of when I listen to it now, like 49+ years later. Annie
Another excellent reaction. Great impression of the lyrics - My same thoughts. - A haunted dread is immersed in the tune that immediately reminds me of a dreaded obligation to leave for war and his hopes of reuniting back to his love as it currently was. Keep them coming. 🙌🏼💕
Pretty sure only Plant was 20..the others were about 5 years older. But seriously how does he have THAT voice and presence at 20?! They were lightning in a bottle..once in a lifetime
It's so important to understand how this album was recorded in about 24 hours. Jimmy Page was heavily influenced by Chicago blues and wanted to create that sound. He didn't have time to write an entire album so he borrowed this song from Anne Bredon. Led Zeppelin covered this song the best 🎸
The song was actually written by Anne Bredon about when she was wanting to leave her husband. The original is much different. But the Led Zeppelin one is probably my favorite song of all time.
Yes. This song was written by a woman and then covered by Joan Baez. Important to keep in mind that Led Zeppelin 1 is a COVER ALBUM. Willie Dixon wrote and inspired most of songs. He sued Led Zeppelin and got paid his royalties.
As far as Rolling Stone. First their attitude towards Zep wasn’t all bad. IMO I think their negativity arose from their view of The Yardbirds, which was considered back then as the first super group. RS once editorialized them as “Revolutionizing” rock n roll. Jimmy Page signed on late as a session guy right before they broke up. Jimmy Page was the only guy left and renamed them The New Yardbirds, then Led Zeppelin. Their music was such a departure from the Yardbirds that IMO RS was viewing Zep as tearing down their revolutionary Yardbirds. During the 70’s Zep conquered the world, everything. And, RS had to come around realizing they weren’t trying to be the Yardbirds, but just Led Zeppelin. The association was broken as Zep became bigger than anything the Yardbirds (great group) ever were. Zep conquered RS in the end!
It is to go off to a crusade. The LZ crusade, which ensued. That was always my take. A great book is called “...All of The Songs”. A series, but breaks down each song, lyrical meaning, and history/inspiration of each.
I think it's someone torn between wanting to leave and wanting to stay but not someone forced to leave. He wants to 'ramble' so that doesn't sound like leaving for reasons of war. It's interesting that the two aspects of his desire are represented by different music. The slow melodic bits seem to represent his desire to stay and sadness at the thought of leaving, and the up tempo driving parts seem to represent his strong urge to leave. That's how I see it anyway.
Never heard this as a (anti?)war song... He tells her he's got to ramble, and back in the day nobody I knew considered joining the military as a "ramble"!
Lol, you can see Plant struggling to mime the words, without improvising like he normally does. (6:27) This is the only performance they ever did like this as they hated miming their songs.
back in the day, groups had to mime for tv, and this is one, and you can tell Robert is laughing about it and Jimmy plays acoustic on his Telecaster etc.
That's not true in the case of Led Zeppelin. They never mimed at all. They didn't do tv because they wouldn't mime. Read a bit of LZ history and you'll see this. This performance was a very early performance just after they produced their first album. It was during their short tour of a few European cities mostly on university campuses.
Rolling Stone hated Led Zeppelin because “they” hadn’t made them big. Led Zeppelin made it big and fast by word of mouth. They didn’t need Rolling Stone and Rolling Stone hated that.
He's leaving his girlfriend to go to America and become famous! They are leaving home. Then they do a song called "Ten Years Gone" about him leaving her and did he make the right decision!

I totally agree Lee. STB is my favorite reactor!

Wow thanks man. You're the only one who agrees with my soldier theory. I've been convinced by many that it's about going on tour.
It was written in 1959 by Anne Bredon.
One of my favorites. It's sad yet beautiful.
Can you believe albums I and II came out in the SAME YEAR? Overflowing talent
Love the “YO” I’m 57 listening to them since I was ten, they still blow me away. Like a fine wine or the Good book it just keeps getting better.
I've always thought this was the most impressive debut album ever.
Not really it`s an album of covers, played very well granted but covers all the same. The only 2 originals on it are Good Times Bad Times and Your Time Is Gonna Come.
My very fav Zepp lp, with Zepp III a close second...
That’s a good thought! DD x

@@Chris-kj7de They certainly are great covers but initially trying to pass them off as your own creations is a big no no.
You hit the nail on the head my friend.
Right you are here now!!! Wayne i loveyou smart and witty response. Les Zep RULES!!!
I think RUclips unblocked this out of guilt...they can't deny that you're the best reactor on the RUclips network!

I first heard this album, right when it came out when I was 14, in my friend's attic bedroom, full volume. Whenever I hear LZ I, I think of that.
Mary Margaret Moore Wow, nice!

Fantastic Mary! I did the same with Meatloaf Bat out of Hell
Heard it at the same age upon its release at the helLA Teenage Fair... Can you imagine that there was such a thing in '69?!?
I've said it before, but 100 years from now this song will be listened to and blowing peoples minds who experience it for the first time.
Listen to 35 or so minutes-long, Jimmy Page Radio Interview. Such a rare treat.
I love your reactions!! Spot on!!
So, you did this reaction quite awhile ago. I like your thoughtful commentary. Really quite good. Hope you get plenty more views on these.
This band stops you in our tracks. Suddenly you listen and become aware of life.
They are a musical band, but bring out so much more than music when you listen to them.
So heavy. It is a trip, a journey(musical). All their songs do that for me! Rock Gods!

personally I prefer the interpretation of this song being about pure and simple drama. love is the war.
I love your background, it’s nice to melt into it
You have to check out live from Denmark 1969 performance
Backdrop, like Moody Blues.
Pretty sure only Plant was 20..the others were about 5 years older. But seriously how does he have THAT voice and presence at 20?! They were lightning in a bottle..once in a lifetime
Bonham was 20 also. JPJ 24, Jimmy Page 25.

12:25 That's ALL that Matters.
3:43 When you hear "Holdup", you know it's over. 😉
The band WEEN also has a very broad range of ability. Very unique.
The song was actually written by Anne Bredon about when she was wanting to leave her husband. The original is much different. But the Led Zeppelin one is probably my favorite song of all time.

Nice on the GoT reference and the Lord of the Rings! Page and JPJ were big Tolkien fans! You're very perceptive love it.

You're good man!
It's Led Zeppelin....there songs take u on a Rollercoaster Ride....😂😂😂
Is it about death? Or death of a relationship. All their songs have multiple meanings.
YES
I always took it has having to leave to follow his calling, music.
Peter Grant wouldn't give them access to the band.Thats why they gave bad reviews
The soldier thing is interesting. I took it as he's a rambling man, always looking forward to being on the road
A man in love with his freedom
Yeah Plant always talkin bout ramblin here and there wit all kinda chicks, then complaining his main squeeze be cheatin on him.
Never heard this as a (anti?)war song... He tells her he's got to ramble, and back in the day nobody I knew considered joining the military as a "ramble"!
check out the doors, when the musics over.... its on this level of transcendence.
Pauses are ok, we know why.

I always thought it was about someone tired of his old lady's shit.
My take is its just Robert telling some girl he's gonna leave maybe not today but soonish. Who else could do that? There's nothing she could do
Aliens
Joan Baez wrote it
I'm not sure if you've listened to Pink Floyd, and if you haven't, that is absolutely the next band you should go through.
No idea, thought rock & roll .
Old enough to have lived it....Take a break we never did but probably should have...?
He's leaving his girlfriend to go to America and become famous! They are leaving home. Then they do a song called "Ten Years Gone" about him leaving her and did he make the right decision!
Too bad this a lip synced to the song from the first album.
