Great video! I myself have been using vMix and ATEM switchers for many years now. As of the last couple of years I have started using them together. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, but together they make an awesome system. Currently I am using an ATEM 4k 1m/e in combination with the Basic HD version of vMix. I have a pretty fast HD Elitebook laptop handling the mobile system. The ATEM is contained in a 4ru road case along with a Hyperdeck Studio2, A Teranex 2D, and a 1ru drawer type pullout 17" monitor for the multiview. All camera switching is handled by the ATEM of course outputting to the Hyperdeck recorder. Another program output also goes to the laptop via an AJA SDI to USB capture. vMix takes the input as a single source.
The laptop has two video outputs which I use as follows.
    - One output directly back to the ATEM HDMI input1 for CG
    - The second output to an external second monitor as an extended desktop
I use vMix for a few simultaneous tasks.
    - Backup recording to the local hard disk.
    - Live streaming to Ustream
    - Sending graphics and lower thirds to the ATEM (an input source, not the program out)
    - On occasion I have use the "external' output of vMix to send the program feed to Adobe Flash Media Encoder to simulcast a second live stream to another service provider.
    - I have also use the NDI source to pull in additional content from another laptop on the network.
My main laptop is very fast and seems to be able to handle all of it.
Keep in mind, it is only handling one HD input feed from the ATEM.
The laptop is also running the ATEM control software on the second monitor.
I am looking to upgrade vMix to get more input sources and to take advantage of the video call-in function to bring callers into the ATEM.
All in all, vMix and the ATEM make quite the dynamic duo.
I will go nuts if vMix ever decides to add some direct support for the ATEM in the program.
Like remote control of basic ATEM functions, switching, or triggering based on vMix operations or scripts! Perhaps even full preview and program viewing along with switcher control on one screen! I am not sure my heart could take that.
    Cheers!

We also moved to this solution because our PC was having trouble taking in the video feed, adding the mix, outputting the signal and recording the show. We are using a similar method with vMix but pushing the signal with black as transparent. In the ATEM we set using the Luma tab rather than the Chroma tab in the upstream key.

    • @apntv
      @apntv  2 года назад

Yes’m I now use vMix with a Blackmagic Decklink card to send Key/Fill outputs into the ATEM. This is much better as you can control the level of transparency too. It does take up 2 ATEM inputs but for me that is fine. I also tend to use vMix for remote callers (for hybrid, conference events), VT playout and graphics, playing those into the ATEM. I switch the ATEM from a control surface and use a Streamdeck to trigger events in vMix. It is certainly possible to use software like Companion in conjunction with a Streamdeck to control the operation of both together.

I am considering how to get started and it sounds like Vmix and the Black Magic ATEM is an excellent if not outstanding solution. Thanks for the comments on this setup, just to confirm your perspective, you use the black magic switcher and only send one feed to the PC running Vmix, for a remote call in video, you also route that call through the ATEM box, is that correct? We at WMVPRO.TV (Master Video TV) found it would be easier to use vMix as a Master Control Operation for LIVE STREAMING the sunday church service of IGLESIA CRISTIANA CIUDAD DE DIOS (City of GOD Christian Church) . Also for recording productions, we use BM ATEM with 4 cameras and the output feed to vMix, and in coordination with the TV Director when he want to ID in lower third the Pastor of the Church. The Master Control Operator will do that function LIVE. Also if a video will be Play Back in an specific moment the video will be loaded to vMix before the LIVE STREAMING start to be Broadcast. When the TV Director announce the video play back the MCOperator will be switching LIVE but in vMix the video and then switch back to the BM LIVE . This vMix is the best and flexible software to work with for LIVE or Recorded video productions. Martin Sinclair and vMix TEAM you are the DREAM TEAM FOR LIVE STREAMING. used to run my atems setup the same as this but dawned on me one day instead of feeding vmix as a source into the atem, it would be much easier to feed the atems output into vmix. using the vmix output to connect to my hardware streaming encoders / recorders. I'm now only really using my atem as a switched input for live video and using vmix to switch overlays, switch to play out vids, images etc. and in some cases when I need to run to additional streaming locations and / or recording to the PCs harddrive, that's also done in vmix.

apntv drawback with using vmix as a downstream keying system is that you now have your live feed relying on the stability of your vmix pc. If that goes down you go dark! What would be good is if vmix aloud you to do a key & fill output on a BMD card then you would have the best of both worlds. You can do this with NDI by using a piece of software made by Siena that takes vmix’s Key and fill out over NDI and converts it to hdsdi that you can feed into your Atem. I have done this and works great. We just need BMD to create an NDI to HDSDI with key&fill convertor the we can bypass the sienna software. :)

i think youll wait a long time for BMD to release anything ndi. They have an IP solution using TICO, which is an accepted broadcast codec. The fact they have gone this route makes me think they'll stay with it and not make anything ndi. Currently only one device in their range supports IP infrastructure being the teranex mini converter video to IP 12g agn which uses TICO. You do have the option of running a backup program out of the atem using an aux, if your concerned abt the reliability of the vmix pc, but so far I've never had an issue. Modern PC hardware is very reliable and providing you spec it out for what you intend it to do, I don't have any particular doubts in it. The problem arises when you try doing to much with a under powered installation.

If your laptop has HDMI output you should be able to feed that into the ATEM. You should be able to select the right output from vMix however I have not tried it from a laptop as yet.

I take an HDMI cable from the HDMI output of the computer and connect it to the HDMI input on the ATEM, I hope that makes sense.

I was able to set the output from my PC to 1080 50i as I am using a Blackmagic Intensity Pro 4k card. If you cannot get the correct output from the laptop I guess you might need to use a scaler if the HDMI does not automatically adapt.

Will Vmix allow me to switch live between 3 cameras, each with a different chromakey background, using my computer keyboard, or
another external keyboard? Also will this software work with an iMac, or is only compatible with windows?

VMix is Windows only I think but check out vmix.com

Perhaps you should look to an all NDI-based solution with your current setup. Your live-production pains will be greatly mitigated.
