One of my favorite tracks off of Metallica's Black album is the hard driving "Through the Never" with it's high octane riffs and killer main intro riff.
In this Through the Never guitar lesson I am going to show you how to play that main riff as well as the riff used during the verse.
This is one of those songs that just has a really cool vibe to it and it very fun to play. However, the constant driving muted downstroke rhythm can be a bit tiresome after a while if you aren't keeping your picking hand wrist and forearm as relaxed as possible.
This is also a great riff to practice to work on the synchronization between the two hands. Since the fingerings remain pretty consistent, it lets you focus on timing the two hands to work together perfectly instead worrying about where the next note is.
Start slow and get the pattern down with a nice tight and muted sound. Those notes should really feel like they just popping-off of the fretboard. Once the pattern is mastered it shouldn't take too long to get it up to speed.
Connecting the opening main riff and the verse is a really cool double-stop lick that retains that muted feel and propels us into the verse riff.
The verse riff is a slight variation on that little connecting part. It begins with constant muted downstrokes on the low E string leading into a couple of sustained double-stops. After that we end the riff with a little cool muted descending lick that leads us back to the beginning of the riff again.
I think this Through the Never guitar lesson would be great for most intermediate level hard rock and metal guitarists to learn. The fast downstrokes will provide a nice challenge in keep the picking hand relaxed during an extended constant downstroked riff.
I think this track is great and would love to teach the entire thing note-for-note. I will do just that if I get enough support for it. So let me hear from ya if you want to learn the whole song.

Guitarlessons have a question for you. I have this problem where I alternate pick all the time without thinking about it. I noticed on your lesson it appears everything is down picked. Any ideas on how to train my picking hand to pick all down. I have RSD in my ulnar nerve in my picking hand so I think I am trying to compensate for speed by using a mix of alternate picking and economy picking. Any ideas anyone?
+EvilMP5 There's nothing wrong with alternate picking as long as it sounds good. But with Metallica, almost all of the rhythm stuff is down picked. Down picking does give it a more aggressive sound, but most people wouldn't notice.
I have the opposite problem, I pretty much only down pick, which is great for some things but makes playing lead stuff much harder. I've been trying to work on alternate picking lately.
AFXAcid economy picking is a big pain for me.Struggle with it but I think it's me thinking about it way too much.
