Then you can create central overloads by inverting your fullbacks.
By the way, the below was not an inverted fullback system but they break down a lot of low blocks with opponent defenders defending narrowly.
      Iniesta Fabregas Silva
      Xavi Busquets Alonso
      Alba Pique Ramos Arbeloa
      Casillas
Suarez, Firmino, Coutinho and Thiago are big lost for Liverpool in recent years. But they made some good signings also. They just need to continue adding more skills and technicality into their team.

Excellent video, as always! Slott did mention in an after match interview (I think for LFC tv) that he won't set up like that when he have his strikers back. But it is very interesting to see what he came up with already in his first game. Some of these tactics I had never seen before. It gives a glimpse of his versatility and how much football knowledge the actually has. As a Liverpool fan I am trying not to be too excited, but so far everything about Slott gives me the goosebumps.

Slot's preferred set-up if you look at his last games at Feyenoord is a 4-2-3-1 in which case it would be Alisson in Goal, Trent, Konate, Van Dijk and Robertson form the backline, Endo and Macca form the base of the midfield, Salah Szoboslai and Diaz form the top of it, and Nunez up front...at least that's how I'd see it, but Slot also seems to be open to tweaking the set-up based on opposition so this is exciting times for Liverpool since Klopp, for all his success, did seem a little rigidly stuck to his tactical set-up of a 4-3-3 though he would tweak it a little, but Slot shows more versatility in that respect

it sounds simple but i was so impressed in the first half how slot kept shouting at carvalho to hug the touch line, carvalho is naturally a 10 so his instinct is to offer for the ball centrally but slot saw that was closing the space, if we had the ball with salah for example on the right carvalho would be near the middle of the pitch on the last man which gave him a good chance of getting in behind but ruined everyone else’s. Slot called him to come out wide so the fullback followed him and that made plenty of space for the 2 10’s to play and get in behind

Dutchie here: very good analisyses of one of Slot's tactics! You'll see more of this 'dangerous' one to one defending at Liverpool this year. Slot isn't affraid to conceid a goal. This can and does happen to the best teams. But the passing lines are very short when defending. Even the goalkeeper has a specific task in his defence. So, if a defender makes a mistake, there will always be another defender, keeper or midfielder nearby. In this match he made use of his, what we in The Netherlands call the 'Hot zone'. This in short means overflowing the area just outside the opponents' box. That's why for instance Salah stays almost at the sideline. Either he takes a defender with him, wich will trigger a 'wingback' into the zone, or the defender has to leave Salah at the sideline, wich will trigger Salah to get in the 'zone' now left open more in front of the box.
But he has more tricks up his sleeve. The great thing is Slot already has the type of players he needs. Klopp left him a great team! Therefore Liverpool did'nt have to sign a new player. I think you'll see many exciting matches this year! They will of course lose sometimes but I think Liverpool will be in the very top or Champion this year.

  • @williamhepworth7097
    @williamhepworth7097 2 месяца назад

This is exactly how I thought England should have set up! Foden may not have got a lot of play time, but once Kane retires, we could slot Jude into the false 9 and make some space for Foden in a Szoboszlai like role. Rice isn't a real pivot, so Wharton/Mainoo would need to step up and both have the talent to do so. That and inverting Trent AA into the midfield.
For Liverpool, I assume Endo brings the defensive ball-winning of a good defensive midfielder, but lacks the press resistance, ball control, and penetrating passes for the build-up. Based on Mac Allister games when he was playing 8 he does look like he'll fit the role. Trent AA inverting may also solve some of the build up issues if there are any. Notably Mac Allister was playing with Conor Bradley when he finally moved to the 8 position. Don't think I watched any games with him and Trent.

I know the setup would be different with a striker.
But let’s say he does keep using this setup, than Nunez could be brilliant on the left attacking that space in behind with his pace. Similar to what we saw with Trent to Sadio.
Cody could play as one of those 10s instead of Harvey f.e. as he’s good on the ball and solid physically. Nunez running in behind also gives Cody the opportunity to play wide on the left where he’s at his best.
Eitherway, no matter if it changes or not, there’s lots of fluidity and flexibility which is great and attractive.

This set up shouldn't be used to judge Slot's tactics. He has said he uses 4231, 433 and 4141. Based on the available players we'll likely see a 4231 often but possibly 4141 if teams are sitting back and defending

I tried to figure out how Slot will build the formation, never saw that coming. Even tho' I know it will change when Nunez will come back, this alone really gave me a good feeling.
Imagine a partnership of Gakpo and Szoboszlai as 10s, cody on left, just behind Diaz as a LW. Not gonna lie, I like it.
We need a good ball playing CDM asap. Nothing comes to my mind as a transfer but we still have Bajcetic who was looking very promising. I hope he'll step up quick under Slot, so we don't have to sign someone new. Kimmich is the only one that comes to my mind but he's not really the classic type of CDM.

Once Nunez is back I believe Slot will stick to the 4231 formation with attacking fullbacks and inverted wingers with a number 9 on top of everyone. Nunez is most lethal when he can run behind the defence.

“Tactics are players” in the words of Guardiola. At the end of the day, players make the decisions on the field. And many other factors that contribute to a team’s success. The job of the manager nowadays is becoming over explained and over emphasized even more than the responsibilities of players.

I don't agree you need a "metronome" in the double 6. Not every team have a Frenkie de Jong and they can play their way out. If the smaller sides like Brighton can play it out, if Slot's Feyenoord can do it too, why can't Liverpool's players? It's about repetition and rehearsed passing, and quick one touch passing. You can't receive the ball then think about what to do, that was the problem under Jurgen and hopefully Slot can address thar

    • @CryptoZillian

We dominated possession the majority of games. Only Manchester City was superior in this regard. Arteta always played defensively against us. We didn't have to build up from the back against pressing teams the majority of the time.
