  • The MG Cyberster electric sports car looks to have carved a niche for itself. With stunning looks, impressive performance, good build quality and a hi-tech interior, it is a roadster aimed at those who want the instant response and low running costs of electric motoring without sacrificing on style or fun.
    To find out if that's possible, Vicky Parrott has been living with an MG Cyberster for two months. In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky sums up the car's strengths as well as highlighting some glaring frustrations.

    Car manufacturers should give up on built in satnav and entertainment. Just put android auto and apple car play in your cars, the hardware gets regularly updated and they just do the job better. Then include heads up display integration and put an unobstructed, screen behind the steering wheel, like we have done for the past 50+ years, with the bare minimum of info on it. Audi did a good job with their LCD dash screens in the past, that's all you need. Add a physical volume button and temp controls, job done.

    To disable the safety driver aids there is a shortcut. Swipe down on the HVAC screen and a shortcut menu appears such as the lane keep assist, and a few others hence can be disabled quite quickly.

    Good review! I’ve had mine for 6 weeks and agree the interfaces are over complex.
    There’s also some minor frustrating elements you didn’t touch on eg on the screen you turn volume up using the + on the right. Same for the fan speed but then on the haptic buttons it’s the other way around! It’s a lot of these little things that undermine a good user experience.
    There are a load of good points though! But updates need to take account of customer feedback.

    Good point about the screen layout and very odd software and such a shame they got it so wrong in what is otherwise a great car. I wonder how these issues weren't questioned before release as they seem obvious to me. Maybe all they need to do is move the satnav to the centre console screen or integrate it into the driver's middle screen as other manufacturers do. Then put a HUD on the dash for speed.

    At £55k, whilst the MG Cyberster is good value for being perhaps the only electric sportscar on the market ...it still seems expensive for the MG badge. An MG sports car should conceptually be more affordable, smaller and purer. It doesn't really seem to know what it is -1980s concept sportscar/ supercar / grand tourer? It feels too much of a mish-mash of ideas. Or am I missing something?

      Rubbish! Until you've drifted a two ton Jensen Interceptor around country roads you haven't lived. It helps to have lots of power! Provided you've got the suspension sorted a heavy but well handling car will get the adrenaline flowing as much as a Lotus Elan or Europa from the same period. I've owned and driven all three on fast rural roads and enjoyed them all equally. If the Europa is an Epee, the Elan is a Foil and the Interceptor is a Saber. They all get the job done, just differently.
      I do hate all the bling and slot machine interior styling of these new electric cars. They seem to be trying to compete with computer games and artificial reality when all we want are cars that go, stop and handle well reliably. I'm currently down to just six vehicles, most of them more than a decade old, and I don't think I've ever turned the radios on! I get in a vehicle to go somewhere, usually quickly, not to listen to music of people blathering. I prefer to hear the wind, tires and a muted but harmonic exhaust. I might have to get EVs that synthesize the exhaust noise the way the Hyundai N9 does. damn! Does that mean I'll have to have the radio on?

    I'll stick with my Skoda Enyaq Sportline 85x. Lane assist is one press. Screens are great. Comfortable, fast , handles good cheaper, better build quality, bigger boot, range, list goes on. Plus it’s about to be updated.

    Brilliant review CarGurus! Five minutes in and I'm rolling around laughing. I can remember loving the simplicity of my old MG Midget back in the late sixties. Just a little key, some toggle switches and a few simple dials. Joy by the bucket load !!

      But in two years it will be a great option for many people, especially if they fix the annoying software either by an over the air update or a free upgrade at your local dealer. That said, it's clear from all the reviews, it's a GT and not a sports car, so still a great option for many who want the image and straight-line performance, but prefer comfort over on the limit handling.Depreciation can be your friend, and I'd be surprised if these drop below 20k anytime in the foreseeable future.

    Love the looks but I don't have £55,000, why not cut back on the tech they may be able to reduce the price and that goes for all the new EV's if makers are having problems selling them why not have a re-think? I'm old enough to remember that even having a radio was considered a luxury, but there again when we have governments pricing people off the roads I guess nothing will change?

    The whole point of the (at least regular cyberster) Is the fact that no and absolutely NO cab in existence has all this gear , boot space and the horsepower looks and speed for this price. MG has done a funky fun and frankly cheap nice cab. And let me ask WHO tries to lock their car door before it is closed....ever lol what a stupid point. And come on i set the brightness on my cars screen day one and never adjusted them again in 3 years...who keeps doing adjustment on that? 90% of the issues with screens and other stuff is something you set once and you are done. The voice assist you can both turn off easily and turn the volume down while it is active. Time to actually read the manual for the car. The satnav can also be shown with arrows and directions right in the middle screen.....

    • @philippelamarque3219
      @philippelamarque3219 5 дней назад +2

      100% agree with you. Car reviewers blaming super clever engineers for them not being smart enough to read a manual or understand an OS. People are just lazy and entitled. Screens are actually awesome and driving position is very good for everyday and potentially long use. Unless you like rolling out of your car to get out at the petrol station, lambo style;). GPS has voice and repeats in the center screen so no issue with the steering wheel at all. Suspension is amazing and so confortable for 99.9% of people driving sensibly on a normal road (It might be too soft for a race track but honestly, no one goes there). And this is a GT btw not a race track weapon. Anyway, I'll leave the armchair sim racers criticize while I drive my stunning looking spaceship into the sunset. Camden grey makes it look like an Aston but this has the running cost of a suzuky swift! Thank you MG for creating such a special and amazing mid life crisis toy at such an incredible price. I love it. BTW my 6'2 son fits in it no problem. But OMG it doesn't have wireless apple car play ;) Who cares, really...

    @car7productions731 3 дня назад +2

    100th anniversary of what? MG didn't build 2 tonne EVs in China. These overweight monstrosities have nothing to do with MG. If you are spending your own money buy a real sports car that won't fall apart. If you can afford a decent EV sports get a porsche or audi - they won't fall apart and the money won't go towards equipping the chinese armed forces.

    I wonder if the screen visibility problem is because it's supposed to have one of those stupid Knight Rider style yoke steering wheels? Obviously still doesn't excuse the clunkiness. Fit normal doors, sort out the silly dash and operating system and this will sell like hot cakes won't it?

      @@canary_in_a_coalmine The Cyberster steering wheel has two joy stick type controls. Currently used for volume, track, and cruise control distance etc. This was a huge missed opportunity. The left joy stick should simply control the screen left of the driver display and the joy stick on the right part of the steering wheel should simply control the screen right of the driver display. The joy stick has functions up and down, left and right, and press to select. This would navigate all options with zero needs for these screens to be touch controlled. Seems obvious to me and I own a Cyberster. I'm in full agreement the user interface is clumsy and software amateurish. Great car otherwise.
