Imagine writing such a strong melody and thinking "I'll do a little comedy song with this one, because I'll probably write another one just as good tomorrow".
My newly discovered love of all things "John Prine" brought me here. This is my music and I'm wondering what in the hell was I doing in 1989 that caused me to miss it!!!
He is my favorite song writer and has been since 1987,when I picked up Slow Turning. He can make you laugh or cry, depending on the song and he never disappoints I have seen him twice in Bellingham Washington and he was amazing.
BRAVO John! Folks would be in shock and awe if they knew how many tunes John Hiatt has written that other artists have recorded. He's brilliant as are all the guys on stage in this video.
"Word Smith" wow. This man has less talent than the Beatles and that is saying something. He is so bad he creates a gravitational pull of untalented slack jaw fans who fuel his evil.
I heard John Hiatt perform from a radio station studio one time, and he played something we'd never heard before. The radio dude asked him how many other songs he had written but never performed or recorded. "I don't know - ...three hundred?"
This was never released. I used to see him do shows at McCabe's guitar shop in Santa Monica where he would sometimes pull this one out and also another great one called A Crazy Girl is Hard to Find.
Jesus H. Christmas. Thanks RUclips. Where I live and in my feed my favourite muso since late 1987 was a mystery to Australians. The Slow Turning Guy who sounded black and looked white. I bought mysterious black import Vinyl. Mysterious black import CDs. Not very mysterious tickets to the Melbourne Concert Hall where he supported Robert Cray's Strong Persuader tour, and got a standing ovation from an audience that started leaving just after the title track by the headliner. I left after three songs. Cray was drunk or stoned. The whole concert hall was there to see the so called 'support act', Mister J. Hiatt, and he was brilliant. I loved every minute of Mr. Hiatt, and was disappointed that Mr. Cray let us all down....I was a fan of his as well, but Hiatt was the man in one of the biggest concert halls in the world that night. The support to the support was better than Cray that night. Peter Wells from Rose Tattoo, going full on rockabilly rebel. I'm still slappin' a double bass, 30 odd years later..........
Man,I always love coming back to this little part of the internet. For me, simply one of the greatest performances ever. Thanks mbroders, for keeping this one going. Absolutely brilliant.
ROFL I wish I had known this song existed when I was getting divorced from my ex. Even her brother warned me about her. And the truth is, I wasn't even jealous. I was upset about the deception.
Why is this the first time I've heard of this guy and I'm someone who actually liked "I'm gonna hire a wino to decorate our home" type country tunes....LOL. I laughed......
Jim Cim. I totally agree! I loves me some Springsteen and Newman and all the other wonderful songwriters. John has for some stupid reason, been FAR overlooked or passed by and UNDER RECONGNIZED. He is amazing in every sense of the word. He is my heart and soul. Truly. Thank you for knowing this fact. :)
I have just come upon this piece, I read the title and a handful of comments, but I have not yet listened to the song. I rolled those comments and that title around in my head for a few moments and it sounds like this guy might have been peeking in my windows are reading my --- stuff. Maybe another time. On a good day, maybe.
John is in my top 3 must see artists, however yet to see him, he's not in Australia often, the other 2 songwriter driven musicians I adore are Neil Young & Crazy Horse and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Interesting that when Hiatt talks about "that dark pressure to write a hit song," Prine and Ely shuffle nervously in their seats while Clark is as still and steady as a rock. Forget the central role played by the male sex organ in this song, that balance between art and commerce is the big taboo here. Great though it is i'm guessing this song didn't make a heap of money for anyone but what fantastic art. Love all these guys to bits. Esp, Prine n Clarke.
Met both Hiatt and Jackson Browne at an after concert party in Charlotte many years ago. Hiatt was funny happy dude who also just happens to be a heck of a poet.
The best. The others (also great of course) kind of drifting off there after the intro until he got into the "meat" of the song. Press it Print It Ship It. LOL I'm a huge fan seen him more times than I can count and never heard this.
I told him the story and begged him not to tell anybody. And here he is tellin the whole world qbout me. It is ok, though.❤😂❤😂😅😊. HERE I AM IN THE CEMETERY LAUGHING LIKE A MAD MAN. IS IT APROPRIATE???
wonder if he'll be playing this at Bluesfest Byron Bay, Australia at Easter . ... either way looking forward to seeing THE MAN .... along with Steve Earle, Justin Townes Earle, David Bromberg..... how awesome !!!
Um...if someone I knew was fooling around with my woman, I would be doing more than just giving him a good "talking to"! Great song! Ah hell, what can I say, John's a friggin genuis!
This was recorded at the Bluebird Cafe in NashVegas for Tin Pan South. This first aired on 'Coast to Coast' on Showtime. Herbie Hancock was the host. I used to have this on VHS back in the day. I've played on that stage a few times. It's a small world.
@@swamifakkananda4043 You know, the old saying about throwing rocks while living in glass houses comes to mind and perhaps it would be best if I just dropped the subject. ;)
This song plays on every married man's fears, in that we are 5 states away, in some motel room, busting our ass 18 hours a day, to give Jody some slack with our lady. And that she isn't really a lady, just the woman you had the bad fortune to marry. It instills some doubts.
Not only can this man write a damn good song, but his banter is fantastic - all around great performer - he’ll always be one of my favorites.

These songs make me feel so much better when I'm down.
Is there a better songwriter in America or in the world! The man is a true wordsmith of the highest order. Brilliant!!!
Bonnie did say " John is the only person that could rhyme amoeba and queen of Sheba."
"Word Smith" wow. This man has less talent than the Beatles and that is saying something. He is so bad he creates a gravitational pull of untalented slack jaw fans who fuel his evil.
Mark Germino possibly. That's about it......
Bob Dylan ,Jason Isbell, Robert Hunter. I do love Hiatt too!
John Hiatt is Jerry Seinfeld meets Bob Dylan. In other words, he's my hero.
What a comparison. You had me at Jerry Seinfeld 😁
Agreed!
Imagine if this became a hit on Billboard, and Casey Kasem announced the song on AT40! That would have been a blast! 😂😂
Mine too, and a crazy [man] is hard to find 🎶
Amazing. Funny and perceptive. Guy Clark looks like he is going to bust a gut laughing. Outlaw Country. Best
I have only heard two songs this man has written, and he might be in my top five favorite song writers.
need to hear more. He'll be #1
I heard John Hiatt perform from a radio station studio one time, and he played something we'd never heard before. The radio dude asked him how many other songs he had written but never performed or recorded.
"I don't know - ...three hundred?"
Love John Hiatt......IMHO he is very under appreciated.
How and the hell have I never heard this. Everyone on this stage is a hero to me....I guess I just never listened to enough Hiatt.
This was never released. I used to see him do shows at McCabe's guitar shop in Santa Monica where he would sometimes pull this one out and also another great one called A Crazy Girl is Hard to Find.
...Its not often that I am caught at a loss for words - even despite the laughter.... ;-))
what a totally amazing lyric, creative, and hysterical!

John Hiatt's facial expressions crack me up.
Found this by accident, this guy's really talented!
And the song's hilarious. Bet he made a bundle on it hahaha
Yesss you have written a hit song. Yesss you have.
John Prine beside him. God bless 🙏
SO glad I stumbled across this! 5 Stars!! His performance reminds me of Loudon Wainwright! Wish I could see THEM share a stage!!
or compare penisus on stage.
sori for ingrish.
I did, 29-4-1986, Vredenburg, Utrecht. Loudon Wainwright III and John Hiatt together on stage...

Same here.
John Hiatt is phenomenal. One of my all time faves
Four of the greatest to pick up a guitar and a pen.
Forget the song subject, I was just really enjoying the guitar.
Some of the guitar parts remind me of Where Angels Hang Around by James Otto.
thought I was a huge Hiatt fan. 1st time . wait then I noticed Prine sleeping . Thank You for video.
“Press it, print it, ship it”, lol!
Makes me cry, every time.
What a great bunch on that stage!
thats john prine beside him...my favorite musician/song writer/singer ever.. john beside john.. lol awesome
I saw this tour when it was in Chicago.
Quite an epic tune. Love his voice on the last line.
I video taped this back in 89! Excellent
I just watched this again! This has become my favorite cheatin song! Perhaps Robert Earle Keen could cover this? Maybe Willie Nelson?
Just marvelous ✨🎶
thats some funny shit right there.. I like the way he builds the song before he break into it.. Brilliant!

Just ain't nothing like Texas Songwriters.
Some people go in with their legs wide open.
John Hiatt is from Indiana
And John Prine is a native of Maywood, Illinois
Cleet Hogwallop kkkmmmkmkk
I love John Hiatt, thanks for this one.
I live this song! Yes someone's ding dong did the same to me.
Excellent deadpan delivery
'Well, spread me with butter and slap me on the grille!' 🤣
Only John Hiatt would write this. LOL! I can tell it was hard for him to keep from laughing!
Way Funny , and very Cool ! Loved it !

Pure rock classic songwriting!!

I remember when he played this at McCabes guitar shop ... along with Kung Fu Fighting ... what a great show. Thanks for posting!!
I used to love those shows at McCabe's.
So many great unrelased songs he would do.

This is Steve Goodman good. And that's high praise.
Jeremiah Horrigan steve would have never recorded this piece o shit...

Should be covered as mad metal with angry screaming vocals and guitars 🎸
Something like this happened to a friend of mine. Never to ME, of course!!! :
So were you HIS friend???
