In the anime hes one of the strongest characters, even back then losing an arm wouldnt make him go limp after 2 seconds tbh. This is a live action film tho so making it more realistic was a very cool touch.
Yeah, this is 100% the best version of shanks loosing his arm. Him getting overconfident against a marine beast instead of showing out of nowhere and loosing his arm because he wasn't using basic haki makes way more sense

Mohawk’s slash isn’t actually haki. If you’re a good enough swordsman in one piece then you cut the air in a way that carries your strike. Zoro’s been doing it since skypia.
I know S2 is confirmed but I hope we get enough seasons so we can get the live-action adaption of Marineford while yes it's sad I'm definitely not ready to see Ace die in live-action but just the scene of Shanks showing up with the rest of the Red-Haired Pirates and pretty much ending the war single-handily in live-action will be epic.

A lot of people are wondering why Shanks didn't coat his arm in Haki. It's pretty simple: Shanks wanted to teach luffy that his actions have consequences and that he is not ready to go out to sea yet. Shanks sacrificed his arm for Joyboy.
I don't think he wanted to "teach" him anything. People keep acting like this was some big brained move on his part, but keep in mind this was before he became an emperor. the whole point of the scene is that Shanks values Luffy's safety to the point where he isn't thinking rationally. He would rather risk losing a limb than losing Luffy. All there is to it. And it's what completely changes Luffy's worldview, it's why he nearly dies to exhaustion against Lucci and declares war on the government.
The different between the anime is that the Bandit was eaten by the monster along with the ship, and then Shanks came to save luffy by swim. But however this scene is more realistic, overall good.

I don't know a lot...but I think that when a person is about to save someone they love, they probably wouldn't think very much. They would probably rush into things, and maybe get theirselves killed. I think that could be the explanation for Shanks losing the arm...And also it causes extra impact to the readers/audience.
True But there are several added layers that come into light once you read the source material To phrase it like how Shanks relates this incident to a certain someone... "he placed a bet... an investment... on one of the future generation of pirates"
Also, the way I see it is, Luffy realises the value of his life here. Doesn't stop him from doing pigheaded things later in the story, but atleast he fights to survive at any and all costs, because he got a new lease of life here at the cost of Shanks' hand
The live show gave me more feelings for Shanks and Luffy's relationship than the anime. I felt that there was a really deep relationship between them and Shanks showed a lot of love and care for Luffy as if he was his nephew ❤️ I think I'm one of the few who liked these changes that the directors are making. There are a lot of feelings.
Oda didn't originally plan on Shanks losing his arm. The editor of Oda suggested he do something in the scene to make it more dramatic. I doubt Oda was thinking about the contradictions that would exist long term.

I love seeing conqueror's haki portrayed in the earlier episodes. Oda didn't have it fully fleshed out in the manga at this point but in the live action it can be shown more clearly which is awesome
I went into this adaptation expecting it to be cringe and hating it, but it was surprisingly good. However, this scene was one of the weaknesses. Not the acting or the effects or any of that but the really weird pacing. Like Shank's waiting until his arm gets taken since it was part of the story rather than it being a rapid moment while he protected Luffy.
The show put so many details from later continuity in, its amazing. Like Cavendish being on a Wanted poster, or Shanks' crew singing Binks Rum (where Luffy knows the song from). And I find the side story about Corby being Garp's surrogate marine grandson very good. It's kinda what happens in a sidestory between chapters, when Helmeppo's father escapes on the way to prison. However, Garp seems a bit too evil in the show.
I never understood why the fuck Shanks didn't use Armament Haki (well we all know that because Oda didn't created yet). With armament haki the Sea King couldn't be able to damage Shanks and he still would be able to have 2 arms. Well since he didn't then we know what happened.
My theory is that there was a prophecy that if Shanks deliver the Gum Gum Fruit to the rightful owner, then he would lose a limb. Roger probably was the one who tasked Shanks to find the Gum Gum fruit and gave it to his kid. So, Shanks went to Windmill village, trying to find Ace.
Budget still bit low on the effect, the actor did all he can do. Maybe make the background twist from Shanks, like hot steam that make image blur, that may seem better

It's important to establish that Shanks being badass has nothing to do with Devil Fruits, hence why he's shown swimming. It makes the world bigger and adds to not only Shanks' mystique but also the scale of the world, where Devil Fruits can only take you so far. tl;dr It's cooler if people think Shanks is just a badass rather than someone with a special power.

Its difficult to show intimidation in live action compared to the manga/anime, but its certainly the closest we can get.
