I just looked up jalebi and indeed it's pretty much made the same way, just that jalebi is poured in a neater pattern. Also, the batter recipe may be different. From Wikipedia:
"It has been suggested that the American funnel cake is derived from the Arab and Persian cuisine, brought by German emigrants and called Drechterkuche.[3] The history of the invention and subsequent spread of this food thus remains open to interpretation and unresolved."

The batter is put into a funnel & poured out through the tip into hot oil to fry. Poured out in a swirl. Found at carnivals, amusementparks & fairs. Topped with confectioners sugar & sometimes strawberries & whipped cream.

I love funnel cake. I only get it once a year when the fair comes to town but it is so good. I literally look forward to it all year.

I love getting them at a flea market or a fair. Powder sugar and some cinnamon plus a good cup of coffee.

My grandmother would make this Pennsylvania Dutch treat for us. Pancake mix drizzled in a pan of hot oil. Turn placed on a platter and a ton of powdered sugar sprinkled on top.

One of my favorite desserts! They're made a lot at carnivals, the fair grounds, amusement parks, and the drive in movie theaters, etc but they're easy to make at home too. I like mine with the powdered sugar, chocolate syrup and strawberries!! :)

All the years I've attended the Wisconsin State Fair I have never had a funnel cake, maybe because it's too messy because of the powdered sugar
