    I'd say Armored Core is probably the pinnacle dex and speed while not going too far into black magic

    I appreciate you expressing the importance of not over-categorizing things. It's natural to want to put things under labels and into boxes, but good mecha can almost never be placed so squarely into one box, and expressing the many aspects of the design in nuanced and perhaps undefinable ways is exactly the right idea.

    Using Zone of the Enders as an example is a damn good one as ZOE itself is a damn good game.
    I’ve always been a fan of the sleek and swift machines, those machines that slice through the wind like a blazing knife almost as if nothing was there like the orbital frames as well as the Jaegers of pacific rim that just radiate strength and mass even from the more swifter ones that still throw up large gouts of water as they run through the ocean.
    Good video discussing how the principles of design interact with each other energy should be a rather interesting topic given how abstract it is.

    The first half of the video is a bit overly focused on the wrong approach, and could have been trimmed down I think while still communicating clearly. The core explanation of "establishing the 'Physics of Spectacle' defines the show and its mecha" is completely valid! It's a better way of comparing and contrasting within the broad genre than merely "super robot vs. real robot vs. combining robot etc.", and your argument persuades me on the point. It just belabors doing so.

      @@argonbolt You mean the other show that Taniguchi worked on before Code Geass? I once checked the first episode and I remember liking it quite a lot, I should probably come back to it.
      PS: I really like the main mech of that show, maybe not as much as my boy Lancelot but it still looks good.

      @@suncanny1418 Yeah its obviously not quite Code Geass, but its a really really fun show that is clearly just enjoying its story the way CG does. Also neat to see a bunch of stuff that would be refined with CG show up earlier. Dann of Thursday is a great design and I also really like Vulcan from that one as well.

    Good video, the way the mecha moves is so important for so many reasons. It can set tone, personality and more. Also how do you feel about drastic changes in dexterity? i.e. In Iron blooded orphans when they introduce the Baal and sudden gundams be flash steppin.

    • @argonbolt
      @argonbolt  3 года назад +3

      Like a lot of things its how you use it more then if. Mechanical systems should remain consistent generally, but flow and change with the plot or to express something. If its weird it should have a logic to its weirdness like with Rahxaphon.
      Otherwise you sorta lose how the mass of the machine should feel and how it should move in the audiences mind.

    I’m in highschool and in my first year I tried drawing Mecha and I couldn’t get it so I gave up and went back to drawing monsters, humans, architecture and so on but I recently got back into drawing Mecha and after watching L-Gaim, reading Five Star stories and Zeon Revival I got a drive to draw mechs but I got back I got better but the question of why draw Mechaa kept poping up in my head and then I watched this video then switch fucking snapped I’m making this comment 3 months afterwards I’m writing all this all out to say thank you some dude on the internet telling me how to think usually pisses me off but I know get when people draw mechs now (I’m known as that guy who’s really good at drawing robots now for good and bad)

    I'm on a bit of binge of watching/re-watching your videos. A lot of times there are background footages used that I've never been exposed to. I'm a big fan of mechs/mecha but there are a lot of things i've only ever been exposed to through your channel, thank you for that!
    You're gonna get this comment from me a lot so i apologize in advance if it causes an annoyance, but could you tell me what around 1:43 is from? Thanks for the video!

    I think you’re being a little disingenuous by implying that the causal relation of mass and dexterity always = good, because the real test of a mechanical design’s movement isn’t whether it makes any sense, it’s how it captures the feel of the machine. It’s why the action in Igloo looks like crap: it’s based off principles that were reverse engineered off the idea of mobile suits to see how they would work in the “real world”, but it doesn’t fit the actual designs at all because Okawara intended them to move in the way you see in 0079.
