Love battleship and submarine anime. Tons of them I never see talked about enough, space carrier blue Noah, Submarine 707 and tideline blue (two other Satoru ozawa anime he seems to have a pattern) on a side note 707 F is one of the most fun manga I’ve read takes the naval aspects of blue sub no. 6 and imports them into the space opera of Yamato and Harlock. or we can even go further then that and go with deep blue fleet an alternate history ova based off a novel series by the author of big wars which has some of the most insane concepts involving battleships ever which is why I adore it and it is in my top 10 anime. Or even stuff like Lorelei witch of the pacific, sea without exit, or isle of tokku all of which deal with Kaiten pilots. Other examples like Super Atragon Great War of archemdis, or the two big modern naval manga pioneers kaiji kawaguchi author of the silent service, aircraft carrier ibuki, and the amazing alternate history manga Zipang. And Soichi moto, who’s made two isekai alternate histories involving teenagers and World War II. As for planes there’s too many anime to count area 88 is still the standout, if you can’t tell I love naval anime and manga. Mecha too but watching battleships in space or in water decimate each other always effects me like no other anime. I hope you keep doing more millitary anime retrospectives like this along with your mecha videos. They are two of my favorite anime genres ever

If you ever heard of baldr sky, it might've took quite a bit after ace combat 3 from setting to story branches exploring different factions and even a similar big reveal. But the robots look horrid...

Good evening, sorry if this is oddly formal but I stumbled across your channel as of late, I just wanted to send my appreciation. I find your skills to be impressive despite not completely grasping them. You’re channel sorts inspired me in terms of how I write stories. You’re video on Armored Core and Hyper objects made me think alot more in depth, beyond just surface level fights. I know it doesn’t mean much coming from me but I sincerely thank you for making these videos, they are of a great comfort to me.

Even as a kid where I only had the scuffed worldwide release of Ace3 I really remember the designs and logos being incredibly striking just like WipeOut. Also realising how much overlap these series have now hahaha, Im glad people cherish those designs still.

though I haven't played AC3, but just going by General Resource sounding like the fictional reflection of General Electric, I feel as though the camo should have had a more minimalist scheme with maybe the shoulder or torso holding the majority of the color diversity, regardless, I still do love what you did with the decals and the design still catches the eye quite well

I personally think the UPEO design is a bit too crowded for something that should be very easily identified. UN colors are there in a way opposite to military colors: to stand out so that it is increasingly obvious who you shouldn't shoot and even when you shouldn't shoot. As a result you want just the one logo in a very obvious place (good luck with AC 6's frame parts though) and maybe the SARF logo if you want it extra clear that no corp wars are gonna happen around these parts. You could even add one of the corpo logos if you want that angle of corpos attempting to shill their products through what is basically the UN: something I find kinda funny myself. Whether you should have used one of the internal combustion generators like SANTAI is up to you, but I find that being forced to use more primitive power generation sources is kinda on brand with an organization that has to make due with the secondhand stuff of the corporations. GR and Neucom can afford the special stuff and so if they get the fancy blue flames it's totally fine.

This may not be the place to ask, but I was wondering if you had any plans to do something with patron in the future?

After watching the whole video I just want to say that I enjoyed it and appreciate the effort you went through to show the comtext, history, and depth of this film. However, while it is my favorite Gundam movie, it having political and philosophical themes does not excuse it from its flaws. 1. It doesn't give context for the political themes it's trying to convey, therefore it isn't really the audience's fault for not knowing it. 2. The new trio characters are just not great. There are self-absorbed, abnoxious pricks and Hathaway goes full insane eco-terrorist in his own movie and I can't stand him. He isn't a good person even if he is the protagonist. 3. I understand that Char was never going to end up a good guy, but his return to Zeon being off-screen is unforgivably lazy, rushed, and throws away his character development from Zeta, only to replace it with womanizing, manipulative, groomer Char.

1:22:55 These parallels are not lost on me. They are just rushed and annoying repeats of the characters that are already established. They don't actually have enough time to develope or be interesting, so they end up as annoying is episode 1-11 Kamille.

voltes 5 is soo masively popular here in the philipines that even now decades later evryone recognize the opening song, they even made a full legth movie on the last few epesodes of the anime i think way back early 2000s cause it was banned by marcos airing on tv in the 80s,and those final episodes were no longer available to watch anywhere else, and last year they made a live action of the anime with full piliino cast so yeah, voltes 5 was something here.

I appreciate you expressing the importance of not over-categorizing things. It's natural to want to put things under labels and into boxes, but good mecha can almost never be placed so squarely into one box, and expressing the many aspects of the design in nuanced and perhaps undefinable ways is exactly the right idea.

This is still an absolutely impeccably designed way to illustrate the sort of "spectrum" of design and story philosophies. I was sucked into Gundam very recently, and it has immediately spiraled into a deep fascination with the designs themselves. There has not been a better resource for this released since you made these four years ago. Nice fucking work.

I love the various mobile suit designs in Zeta and I remember all the mobile suits as I played a lot of Zeta Gundam games when I was young. Far as I'm concerned its better to go overboard than not. As for CDA I liked it. Haman naturally being the way she is just from living in Axis, or from manipulation of men I don't feel it ruins her character either way. It does do a good job of setting up how she became the leader of Zeon, so its fine.

Such a great video/essay. Throughout this retrospective, I was able to understand what I could feel at times during my first watch of the Gundam series, to put words on them. Now I understand a lot more to how and why Gundam is still relevant and that we should care indeed. Thank you for all your immense work and everyone around it !!!

While I do agree on many points here, would it be more accurate to treat Real vs Super as not a black and white stance but as terms on a spectrum? From powerscaling to storytelling and conceptual narratives, I think some lean closer to the left and others to the right (Regular/Real to Super). And since it is a spectrum, it is also one that could easily implement the various shifts in Gundam like you get the more grounded realistic stuff.. but then you'd have shit like Gundam 00 with Awakening of Trailblazer that just truly goes closer to super. Personally, I treat them as "categories" as one would just use to guide newcomers and fans. One may like votoms more and might be able to forgive some of it's more unrealistic feats but at least it's like night and day comparing it to something like TTGL. Could also vice versa. Some people like the world of TTGL more than Votoms. And the main caveat at the end of the day, whether it's EVA, Votoms, Gundam, or Getter Robo, they're all romanticizations of the conceptual idea that is mecha. Whether it's a story about heroics or a story about the harshness of war. I do think these terms still hold value, but I personally think the approach to them is shit, which I think is cause for some of these takes and conflicts on the terms, but I for one do believe they hold the best value in the form of a spectrum on a line and that spectrum is essentially infinite left and right. Like comparing fighting mechanics easy to hard (Divekick to the absolute skill ceiling that is the Tekken series way on the right). But as like any fiction, some things start out black and white but eventually expanded on to have this more grayish and mix-like field. With either terms breaking rules or borrowing from each other. However, this is why I do think the spectrum idea of the terms work best as it's more like how often does one show hug closer to elements and quantities of believability and realism-ish vs just doing fuckall fun things but still have a good story (TTGL). Also yeah, SRW is such a mixed bag. Despite having "Super". they have everything of both actually. I guess they didnt want to go with the "crossover" or "allstar" route for naming.
