Bette Davis and James Cagney, never again will we see the likes of these two together, nor the sparks that flew when we saw them. No one could have done their kind acting any better.Absolutely no one.
@@kevinkilduff2064 yes amazing actors, but I personally rate these 2 better, and I can't help feeling as good as Spencer tracy was, the praise that is has bestowed upon him is a tad overrated, remember, overrated doe not mean bad, but in context of how he's perceived, I honestly believe cagney was a great movie actor than Tracy, but do acknowledge the ability of him nevertheless🎥😊
C no evil. Strange, BD may have thought so for a while, but she said in interviews how much she hated “The Bride Came COD”. She felt that their talents were quite different, disliked James Cagney then.
@@marjoriemargel1567 She disliked quite a few people but in the end usually came around. She rather famously hated Errol Flynn but many years later, watching one of his old movies with her pal, Olivia D., she turned to her and said, "I was wrong about him."
James Cagney and Betty Davis were cut from the same cloth when God made these two extraordinary talents and somehow we were all lucky enough to see them. Movies have yet to produce the kind of talent in the years since they appeared together and not likely ever will.
Jimmy is so wonderful and magnetic as a personality. Bette mentioned in a 1970s interview that she wishes she could've done more with him. The electricity is fierce in this scene. They had a similar strength of personality that shines through here. The dialogue is witty and Jimmy is a hysterical comedian the way his lines bounce and crackle and his comic face-slaps at the end are sheer genius. I absolutely adore the way his slaps are so sudden and delivered with such shocking yet hysterical force! Sheer genius. All of that delivery takes great artistry and timing. Something which is sadly lacking in today's actors who lack intuition and are too overly trained. Cagney and Davis were highly intuitive talents and naturally gifted. No one can teach you at drama school how to be a Cagney or a Davis. It's innate.
@Flenif2247 My favourite for sure. I used to drink in a bar in Poughkeepsie, New York that was owned by his business manager, Marge Zimmerman. There was a big portrait of him above the fireplace. I wish I could have met him.
That was a tightly written, beautifully choreographed, well directed and stunningly acted scene. Their words and bodies moved in harmony at a very quick pace. What a pleasure to watch.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the writers of these classic Hollywood films. They made the sharp, sparkling dialog that drove the dramatic and comedic encounters between the great actors.
One can see why the impressionist Frank Gorshin fell in love with this guy. I can see "The Riddler" in Cagney the way he stands. The truth is there is only one, true and great Jimmy Cagney and that's JAMES FRANCIS CAGNEY himself!
Now - that was a first class master's degree acting class. Holy cow - they're perfection - nobody stealing a scene here because they're equally strong and confident. Fabulous.
Watching Mr Cagney and Miss Davis, is like watching a great tennis match. They truly were wonderful together, it's such a shame they weren't paired together more.
Icons of all time both were simply marvelous the best of the best , l just wish they would of made more movies together. May they both be resting with the Angels 🙏🌿......
Just watched it on TLC. It's like a time machine - seeing the authentic girl's hairstyles, dresses, and the slang they used in 1934. Bette Davis is so young in this. Both stars are so charismatic.
This was Jimmy the gent from1934. They made one other film together The bride came c.o.d 1941. Both movies were alright comedy/drama. I believe they got along, they are both cut from the same mold. Both had issues with Jack warner, who was a real SOB. And they were 2 of warners biggest stars.
7 years later they did " The Bride Came C.O.D " . I haven't seen this Cagney/Davis movie , but I have seen " The Bride Came C.O.D " , cause I own it . Boy , Bette certainly is young in here , she's like 25/26 in here , and Jimmy he's like 34/35 in here . James Cagney 1899 - 1986 and Bette Davis 1908 - 1989 . Cagney was 86 and Davis was 81 .
The story of Jimmy Cagney is the story of America, Born in the gutter, Worked hard despite setbacks, struggled, strived, persevered and in the end became a giant. The Cagney name is Irish, But you can put a Jewish, German, Polish, Italian etc etc name there the narrative is the same, America is an incredible idea.
As I've read, Cagney spoke Yiddish at home, but he was still Irish. Doesn't make a lot of sense, but he did grow up in a German/Jewish neighbourhood of Manhattan, Yorkville on the upper East side.
He was from a Jewish and Irish area. That's why he knew Yiddish. Maybe German area too. But Little Germany was gone with the sinking and fire of the General Slocum.
I'd pay good money to have Better slap me like that! I always liked her when she played angry! The words just flew off her tongue and we're sharp as needles.
LMAO Only Cagney could get away with shoving a woman and slapping someone repeatedly and claim to have ethics. And that haircut is silly. Love him, thanks for posting this!
In one of her autobios "The Lonely Life", Davis says she wished she'd done something fine with Cagney in addition to those two manic comedies. Both fought very hard to avoid getting typecast; both actually went on strike against Warners. It's a cliche that most actors get typecast and privately have more talent and sides to their personalities than is ever shown on screen.
one of the things that Orson Welles brought to film was 'over speaking', where the actors would talk at the same time instead of these two waiting for the other to finish his or her line before doing theirs, which really isn't normal/natural way to converse
Jimmy didn't have much time for Betty Davis actually. He said she had a mouth like a sewer,,,and being an old-fashioned guy, Cagney didn't approve. ( and told her so ).
Bette Davis and James Cagney, never again will we see the likes of these two together, nor the sparks that flew when we saw them. No one could have done their kind acting any better.Absolutely no one.
Might throw Tracy and Hepburn in there!

They made another together called The Bride Came COD. It’s good fun
@@trevormichael4906Yes it is.
Wow! The chemistry between those two jumps off the screen!

More talent in this scene than exists in any body in all of entertainment today.
James Cagney and Betty Davis were cut from the same cloth when God made these two extraordinary talents and somehow we were all lucky enough to see them. Movies have yet to produce the kind of talent in the years since they appeared together and not likely ever will.
James Cagney with them fresh fades

Great post. Yes they were the best. Love all these 30s and 40s actors, they will never be forgotten

"Do you need a diagram?" There's nothing like old Hollywood innuendos.
Mr. Cagney....my favorite actor!
Mine too!
Same here with me as well. 🔫🕵️♀️🎬🎥👍😉
Same for me!
So funny. Cagney and Bette Davis. Two of my favorite actors.
"I'm liable to catch something, hanging out in your mind!"
You have to love James Cagney! He's the best 🎥!!
Both one of a kind acting talents. Would have been great if they had appeared in more films together. Both had such ability to light up a screen!
Wow BD was a knockout in younger days.
And JC made it so real!
That's for sure! They are good together!
Their second and final picture together was "The Bride Came C. O. D." (1941).
Cagney was a poet, guitarist and a very loyal friend to those deserving loyalty.
And painter.
Great dancer
Bette is so young..hard to remember her this way
Bette Davis sure were pretty in her young hay days. What a fox back than. And for James Cagney that's one of my favorite actors.
I think he was HOT, too
I'll say this one time. Jimmy Cagney is the best tough guy there will always ever be.
& I'll repeat it for U, Tommy Borgia1.
Tough and tender.
@Flenif2247 Cagney? I doubt it. My ex-wife's late mother knew him.
@Flenif2247 My favourite for sure. I used to drink in a bar in Poughkeepsie, New York that was owned by his business manager, Marge Zimmerman. There was a big portrait of him above the fireplace. I wish I could have met him.
only in your mind

WELL OBSERVED, JOHN! 🏆
His haircut trends in 2020!!!!
Bette Davis was James Cagney's female counterpart. In other words, she was the female version of his on screen persona.
*onscreen
"Signed Jimmy Corrigan... the boy with the worm's eye view." ...... Ouch!
"Sure boss you been a sucker for class all your life!"
Lmao!!!
Sparks, flame, fire, thunder, two brilliant actors rebounding off of each other....whew!
Bette really holds her own against Cagney! I think I want to watch the whole film.
+gazebo46 Of course she did. When your the best actress of all time period.
Two of the best of the best may there soul"s RIP James Cagney & Bettie Davis Icon"s til the end of time. 👼💔💙👼👏

Two of my favorites from the Golden Age of a Hollywood. Cagney and Davis created dynamite together!✴️✴️✴️
James Cagney's hat is the true star of this scene! They don't make them like that any more.
What Great acting
Now - that was a first class master's degree acting class. Holy cow - they're perfection - nobody stealing a scene here because they're equally strong and confident. Fabulous.
Brilliant stuff from a pair of real pros. Love the way he sits her down twice, but not for a third time...
Wow! They set the screen on FIRE!
Good god, this is fantastic. Especially the ending.
Watching Mr Cagney and Miss Davis, is like watching a great tennis match. They truly were wonderful together, it's such a shame they weren't paired together more.

Cagney, the coolest cat ever on the big screen!

Cagney cut his hair like this on purpose to get back at WB management. He and Jack Warner were always going round and round.
is there a book u might know that details that?
Watched this last weekend on TCM and I am just amazed of the chemistry these two had!!! I wondered if they ever got along off-screen?
I would bet they did get along off screen ....
They hated each other off screen. Jim had that stupid haircut for this character and Bette refused to be photographed with him.
@@lillianbarutti4875 not true. There is a photo of them together with JC buzz haircut.

Amazing stuff. Two great artists.
Bette could hold her own. One of the best actress s Ever ❤
This is awesome . Thanks much,
I love the quality of the dialogue, the English grammar was so correct. You don't see that anymore.
Slow the speed to .75 and thats the way actors sound now.
Classic Hollywood greatness.
"Am i a gentleman or ain't i "😂.
A battle of machine gun dialogue! A wonder one of them didn’t bite their tongue!
Epic talents
Ah, two of my favorite actors!!!
she was definitely his match!
"EVERY BUSINESS IS CROOKED!"
Classic 🙏💙😇
Dynamic Duo. Bette once said she would take second billing to James Cagney any day. 💐🌷🌹
Those two were such big stars of warner bros
Only woman I have seen get to tag Cagney, I’ve never seen this , I’m impressed!!!

Put the last name of a black person and see if you get the same perseverance and success.
He was from a Jewish and Irish area. That's why he knew Yiddish. Maybe German area too. But Little Germany was gone with the sinking and fire of the General Slocum.
why can't we have Actor's Like These
They were stage actors first
They were BOTH forces of nature eventually challenging the studio systems, going to war with, & eventual winning!
The only time Bette said no to a cigarette. 😂
#LoveHer
That't true- you could tell what she was thinking by the way she smoked. She made it an art form.
fantástic scene! thanks!
I knew about the tiff with WB, but I didn't know the reason behind the haircut. That's awesome trivia, thanks! :D
" sure boss you've been a sucker for class your whole life"😂
Great stuff!!!
these two have great on-screen chemistry but why couldn't the studio find them better films for their talents?
Two of the best ever. A ton of very good actors back then and not one of them was a method actor.
"Do ya need a diagram?" Best insult I've ever heard.
Someone else will probably bring it up, but seven years later they were even better together in "The Bride Came C.O.D.".
The two teamed again for "The Bride Came C.O.D".
To Evening T - that wasn't the scarecrow at the end; you must have meant the cowardly lion!
I love her outfit, especially the hat.
I am crushing on Jimmy
Allen Jenkins came out of a vaudeville background just like Cagney. Both were hoofers.
Well in his latter years JC said he never said 'you dirty rat' perhaps it came from this...
It seems to be similar to 'Beam me up, Scotty' where it spawned from several variations in his career but was never said word for word.
Extraordinarios actores no la basura de hoy
I'd pay good money to have Better slap me like that! I always liked her when she played angry! The words just flew off her tongue and we're sharp as needles.

Betty is smart , she slapped James Cagney like she was James Cagney & then got the hwll outta there to let someone else take the beating 😂
2 giants.
Could I move to this reality please?
Carbuncles. ‘Nuff said.
These two gave Jack Warner fits, she quite and made Jack come get her and Jack called Cagney a “professional againster “
Great is great and they were great!!!!
Those were the days.
Tough guy meets tough gal. Btw, that's the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz Cagney's slapping up at the end of the clip... ;)
I think he might be the lion, he isn't the scarecrow.
its not the lion or the scarecrow..bert lahr was the lion

She hit him hard in the face with her purse at the end of this encounter.
Look at that Peaky Blinders haircut.
I think he was the greatest ...
Jimmy the Gent
Jimmy didn't have much time for Betty Davis actually. He said she had a mouth like a sewer,,,and being an old-fashioned guy, Cagney didn't approve. ( and told her so ).
Do you mean for the movie or off screen? I'm trying to find out if they got along off screen ......
@@Comdesron17 They actually got along according to Cagney in his biography...because they both disliked Jack Warner.
Cagney as "Jimmy, the Gent"....😠🎥🎬
To me he's like the old time Sean Penn lol.
I never seen this movie : (
damn. she really whacked him one. lol
James cagney is a true gent?? I will overlook his errant ways . Esp as this is from years ago
