  • Here is a very brief overview of a rare helmet, the number 8 experimental US combat helmet of WWI. It was developed in the closing months of the war but never adopted by the Army for battle. Nonetheless, many of the characteristics of the Number 8 can be seen in the venerable M1 helmet that soldiered on for nearly fifty years.

I was amazed by the design of this helmet. Disappointed that it was never 'officially' used by the Army.

As a lover for medieval war equipment I really love this piece. What u can clearly see on this model, is that it is looking like hybrid between a 14th - 15th century Pig-face bascinet and a sallet. Althought the model 8 is speciffically made against blows, shatters from firearm weapons. the wide opening around the neck of the model 8 tells you that the helmet would mainly be worn by soldiers in trenches (as you demonstrated in the video). It could also be purely a design for flexibility around the neck or for weight reduction.

As a maker of medieval helmets I found this video fascinating, I have seen the helmet before through glass but to see it worn was most interesting, thank you!

Nice video. Without the visor it looks a bit like a German ww helmet. Today i found out the my German helmet-on-a-stick ( for postwar farm use) is a M35 ET66 with the owners name and rank in it. It also has much paint on it. Decals or no more visual. It was a gift from a woman in a village, 20 meters from the Netherlands, near Aachen, Germany.

Why wasn't it used more? It seems like a great helmet. Bot to mention it's really cool looking.

Great video the very early British helmet had no rim and are known as raw edge, the Belgians also had a vizor trench helmet called the Elizabeth helmet, think it was named after the Queen of Belgium but don't quote me on that.

I wonder how many portuguese helmets you got, I see you have a portuguese legion m/916 helmet, the shell was used in ww1, the liner and chinstrap were modernised in the 20s/30s, this kind of helmet saw further combat in the Spanish Civil War when portuguese Viritos were sent as an aid to Franco's army.
