    You mention that Starfield "tells you its story", which got me thinking it's kind of the other way around. Bethesda games are more like Crusader Kings, Mount & Blade, Rimworld where YOU tell the game YOUR story. They appeal to people who enjoy freeform sandbox experiences. The gaming industry has trained consumers to expect heavily linear cinematic movie games where the player has no agency, which is why I think the mass reception to Starfield has been so lukewarm.
    Even in an RPG as interactive and dynamic as Baldur's Gate 3, you are still playing the linear story that Larian's writers laid out for you. The nonlinear sandbox nature of Bethesda writing allows you to approach its questlines with any kind of character at any point in the game. Most people don't actually want this kind of freedom because it requires you to actively "make up" the story as you go along. All the comments here complaining that you used mods are exactly what I mean. There is no "intended experience" with Starfield or any Bethesda game because they want YOU to make up your own experience. That includes installing mods. You make the game what you want to play, that is Bethesda's "intended experience", if such a thing exists.

Same for Skyrim, there is 100x the world building, crafted quests and questlines, and freedom to go where you want, whenever you feel like it without 13 loading screens in the way, zero mods. There were millions playing the game a year later (2012) and not even PC had any meaningful mods yet, in the same period of time Starfield is dead in the water as you try CPR with mods while treating the viewers as less than bright with your "going in blind".

    Two things would have completely saved this game and made it the best Bethesda has ever done:
    1) The setting should only be our solar system. Cut down on the number of planets by several hundred and actually make some interesting locations. Plus, this makes way more sense within the premise of the game. Humanity should not have suddenly colonized a HUNDRED star systems in a couple centuries. So lower scale, higher detail.
    2) The main story should BE the colony war. We hear about the fact that it happened, but other than that it doesn't matter at all. On top of that, the war is literally the only major point of lore other than the whole "Earth is bad now we have to leave" bullshit that has been used a thousand times. The main story should have been experiencing the war (which was also their chance to redeem the terrible civil war questline in Skyrim), and you could have been able to choose one of the three factions to side with, giving actual replay incentive.
    Pretty sure I just designed a better game by myself in two paragraphs than the whole team at Bethesda did in several years with millions of dollars.

    • @speedingoffence
      @speedingoffence  Месяц назад

      That's a solid point. If there's a more interesting story in your backstory, you should be telling THAT story.
      Kinda like Horizon Zero Dawn. Lotta people hold that game up as having a great story, but no, it really, REALLY didn't. The story of Horizon Zero Dawn is 'girl learns where she came from'. The story people are thinking of is the backstory.
      Note, the reason that humanity expanded quickly is addressed near the end, the short of it is that the FTL grav drive tech just kinda fell into our laps. There really wasn't an interim phase where it was easier to, say, get to Titan, than it was to get to Alpha Centuri.

    The thing you need to remember thats different from something like Skyrim or Dragon Age or Mass Effect about Starfield, is youre just some dude in Starfield. And once you get out of the starting areas and can go wherever you want, there's really no high stakes compelling you to continue down the main quest.
    What makes this unique is that your CHARACTER has their OWN story to tell. Whatever your motivations as a player are, is your CHARACTERS motivations.
    Sure, you do the tutorial stuff, but then bounce off to go to ship mod stuff. Why does your character do that from a story perspective? Because thats their motivations in the game.
    Starfield is so much more self insert than other games, and i think it deserves credit for that at least.

    I was expecting a load screen simulator as its creation engine.
    I was expecting some broken things and some wonky things... because it's Bethesda
    What I was not expecting was such a lazyily written main story and extremely unimmersive environments, even in major cities.
    The first game with an in-universe new game + explanation... yet almost no reason to ever start a new game outside constellation specific starting circumstances that change nothing else within the universe...
    Ship builder which was great, but hardly any reason to ever use the ship you spent an hour customizing.
    Dialogue feels terrible as all responses are pulled from a big folder of RNG selections, so all dialogue is tailored to any selection possible rather than specific answers for specific conversations.
    Meaningless rng loot for the most part.
    It all feels so incredibly shallow...
    It's a big and vast universe...with the depth of a puddle.

      @peterd9698 Месяц назад

      I have a different take. Bethesda's real problem is that they still haven't leant into modding _enough._
      (1) The full modding kit should have been available on DAY ONE. Game release: September 6, 2023. Creation kit: 10 Jun 2024. Thats TEN MONTHS if my math is right. The amount of bad feedback for easily tweakable issues they could have avoided is incalculable.
      (2) They should LEARN from what mods are popular.. and fold those lessons into their next game, making that the default first experience for new players. (they can be fairly conservative on what they incorporate, and it will still be possible to mod something back to the original)
      (3) They should _embrace_ the fact that many/most players are not interested in their main story. DO NOT HAVE UNKILLABLE NPCs. DO NOT IMPOSE JUST ONE MAIN CHARACTER MOTIVATION. In fact, do not impose a single main story at all. Step aside. Embrace the game as just an ecosystem for many factions and faction quests and modder (paid and unpaid) stories to be poured into.

    • @speedingoffence
      @speedingoffence  Месяц назад

      @@peterd9698 Totally agree. I think a bit of that might have actually been the intent when they started adapting the engine. 1000 planets starts to make sense if you're going to let people make campaigns on them. Having story mods take place on their own planets would be a great way to sort compatibility problems.
      Think this was a case of the right hand not knowing what the left was doing, because the modding kit, even now, really isn't conducive to that level of interaction.

    I really like Starfield but am ultimately frustrated by how much of the game is undercooked. Equipment rarity and tiers don't mesh properly. Outpost mining is starts out fun but is proves to be a dead end. Selling gear and resources is pointlessly tedious. Ship weapons are massively unbalanced, with particle weapons so overpowered and convenient to run that they make every other type superfluous. All the dumb NPC reactions, like being praised by Red Mile patrons while security continues to threaten me. I also think metaverse narrative is lame, but that's another discussion altogether.
