Written in 1933, this song was my parents' favorite. Resurrected in 1958 as a #1 hit from The Platters, it had the distinction of being performed by lead vocalist, Tony Williams, who was arguably one of the greatest singers who ever lived.
Thank you very much for filling in the years. I certainly have loved this song since 1961 (dates me terribly!) and never forgot a single word. I hadn't realized that it was written way before I was born. I'll look up Tony Williams to see why his name wasn't up there with those considered the greats. He could hold a candle to any of them with such a voice. Pamela

My loss will happen one day soon we are told. My younger brother has incurable cancer in his brain which has spread to his body. I dont know why he has very bad cancer, its not in the family line, but he's dying. The worse thing is he thinks it wont effect his life span.. yet the doctors have said its terminal and will only get worse :( When the time comes and he passes over, its going to be very sad :(
My father was in the army (joined up when he was 14 years old) served in World War II and during his tenure he used to sing to all his troops whenever they arranged some kind of concert - as a family- mum, dad and five kids - we used to sit around the fire after supper, dad would play the guitar and we would all sing. Some of these oldies especially the platters ( a special favourite of my dad's) Many many wonderful memories - thank god for RUclips and the endless supply of music that will never be forgotten.
Love this song and I absolutely still get goose bumps at 83 yrs of age listening to it -as I had met Tony Williams and the rest of the Platters at a function prior to their concert At the concert he actually turned on stage to where I was sitting and sung this song directly to me = what an experience as I say I still get goose bumps anytime I hear it
My husband was 20 years older than me he introduced me to these great songs he passed away in March and I just start playing these songs just to reminisce about him I have an entire playlist dedicated to him and when I start missing him I play his playlist

Hi Caroline. My late husband Norman was 21 years older than me and I treasure every year we had together. Will never meet anyone like him so am on my own now! Just love these recordings. Keep safe.
This is what real music sounds like. Singers actually had to hit the notes without electronic help. Many people from my generation have passed this music onto their own families who continue to play it for their kids.
With Tony Williams as their lead singer The Platters were one of the best musical groups ever. They had so many hits through the mid-50's into the 60's, great music from a wonderful music era.
Great music. Great times. Tony William's put out an LP on his own . I wish I could find it again. He had such a great voice. Groups were well dressed back then and you could understand all the words.
Tony Williams is one of the greatest American singers ever. Ever. Everybody talks about Sinatra, Jackson, Armstrong, Cash, whatever, whomever... (I'm not dismissing them and others but just asking why Tony is never included with them) Why is Williams so forgotten? The curse of being just a band member. it should have been tony williams and the platters. A truly wonderful singer .maybe not the swing of sinatra the silk of nat king cole the life and fun of dean martin or the tone of matt monro but a great voice in its own right.
Tony Williams and all the other vocalists listed are amazing! Each one has a unique quality to his voice. His name gets lost, because he was part of an ensemble.
Ann James the group on this video is the lineup is when they were at their peak. I think Tony left in the 60s for a solo career. I don't know if any of the original members are alive.
One of the BEST Groups EVER, the Platters and one of the most underappreciated singers, Tony Williams. In my view, he's one of the Great singers of ALL Time - so very smooth.
This song was first sang on bway 1933 then in the movie called roberta with fred astaire n irene dunne in 1935. This song is older than we think it is. I also heard who's sorry now in an old movie later popularized by connie francis.
The Platters songs will live on forever, they were the greatest group of their time. Tony Williams was and still can be considered one of the greatest lead singers ever. Having your wife or girl friend dancing to the many hit songs they sang made you hold each other tight and appreciate the love you had for each other even more.

I absolutely agree. It is an old song from the musical "Roberta" back in 1933, and many people have recorded it before and since The Platters, but none come near matching their version. It is one of about five songs that, to me, are the best of all the great doo-wop songs. The others are "Deep Purple" and "Stardust" both by Billy Ward and His Dominoes. And also "I Only Have Eyes For You" by the Flamingos, and "Since I Don't Have You" by the Skyliners. I grew up with doo-wop and still love it.
On a plane all by itself! Definitely one of the best songs ever recorded.I can't begin to imagine anyone else singing this beautiful and touching song.
The 50's, the 60's .. the good times, we were young and I wouldn't change my youth with today's youth. We had less "novelties" but by watching them, I am convinced that we had a better life and better time. We did a lot with the little we had and do less we all they have..
I tell I've got to stop cutting onions when I listen to this song. I tear up every time I hear it while doing so. Absolutely magnificent! Oh and I'm happy not knowing the 618 people who gave this song a thumbs down.

The best time to grow up was the fifties. I was a teenager and this was one of my favorites. This group was the best of all times. This group was the only one that I would stop listening to Elvis and listen to them. It's sad to know that they are gone. Great group!
I was a daddys girl and this was his band .i love to hear them and see his smile .i danced at my wedding to tbe platters .time has gone by and i miss them both

Great lyric by Otto Harbach and great music by Jerome Kern from the 1933 musical, "Roberta." It made it to the silver screen with the same name, "Roberta," in 1935, an RKO production. You can see it on Turner Classic Movies every now and then. The great Irene Dunn sings the song in the film version. This Platters performance is amazing and beautiful. But no one could mess up something so beautiful as this classic song.
The best group EVER, Tony Williams was incredible...and the girl in the group was an angel face. Reminds me of my childhood , my father and Uncles. I remember listening to this song in bed and the lights out.....it was magic...
ThePantruca RIght! NOBODY could do this beautiful song better than The Platters! Smooth, harmonious and a clear understanding of the metaphorical lyrics! Just wonderful!
The Platters have always been my father favorite group and this song was his favorite. I have always loved this song and The Platters preformance are wonderful, magical, beautiful, passionate, sensitive 🌸 and timeless. The Pletters was group with timeless voices and timeless music.🎶🎼💯❤️👏
Back in the 80s my son was a huge Hank and country fan. So was I. I gave him a cd of the Platters and said this is what we had. He was, as I, quite taken with the group.🦇
I believe that No matter what color you are that your allowed to love and listen to the best singers in the world. This is one of my favorites, always be!
It was the 1950's and I was about 10 years old. My father bought me two 45's and brought them home for me. One of them was "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and the other was "Who's Sorry Now" by Connie Francis. I played both of them over and over and over again. How can I forget my very first 45 rpm single?
+Ellen Quale You just can't - and the music stays with you forever, too.Memorable songs and especially Smoke Gets in Your Eyes for me. We may be be the same era! Associated with the first young man that I fell for -R.A.F. Aden 1961. The music still makes me feel misty eyed!
Tony Williams was one of the major voices in American pop. He never received the recognition he deserved or the accolades. The songs recorded by The Platters with him singing lead became staples for a generation, slow dance stock favorites, and I couldn't imagine my youth without them any more than I could imagine it without Elvis or The Beatles or The Beach Boys or many others of superlative fame. It's a shame, but I suspect that Williams was more or less ignored because of his race. It had to be hard to make these films in nightclubs where neither he nor his fellow Platters could be seated and served.
Frank Sinatra made sure the black musicians were paid good wages. Sammy Davis Jr wasn't allowed to stay in the casinos were he performed. Sinatra said he does or I don't play! Then bought the casino!
Mr. Tony Williams helped make the Platters one of the best Ballard singing groups of all time. His voice touched the hearts of many millions world wide, and I for one will never forget the love through his Voice & songs, that will live on, to time indefinite. IMO
Could Tony Williams sing? Oh my gosh. You can listen to The Platters all day long, since they came from an era when persons who professed to be singers actually were. Timeless grace.

They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
I of course replied
"Something here inside
Cannot be denied"
They said someday you'll find
All who love are blind
When your heart's on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes
So I chaffed and then I gaily laughed
To think they would doubt my love
Yet today, my love has flown away
I am without my love
Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say
"When a lovely flame dies,
Smoke gets in your eyes."

Tony Williams is the pride of Roselle, New Jersey. The Platters can counted as one of the greatest singing group of all times.
The best group EVER, Tony Williams was incredible...and the girl in the group was an angel face. Reminds me of my childhood , my father and Uncles. I remember listening to this song in bed and the lights out.....it was magic...

Back in the 80s my son was a huge Hank and country fan. So was I. I gave him a cd of the Platters and said this is what we had. He was, as I, quite taken with the group.🦇

THE GREAT TONY WILLIAMS WHAT A VOICE THANKS GREAT POSTING.
This Magnificent Voice!
Beautiful Harmonies.....
The Lady ads so much to the sound!!
No matter how often i hear this song, i just keep coming back for more
Tony Williams was one of the major voices in American pop.
Well said.
Sigh sad but true
From my school days till now I love to sing along and get emotional ,feel good!!!
Frank Sinatra made sure the black musicians were paid good wages. Sammy Davis Jr wasn't allowed to stay in the casinos were he performed. Sinatra said he does or I don't play! Then bought the casino!
Yes fabulous group my era too that race thing was exceptionally awful then but we all loved them .(from Australia x)
One of the finest song ever recorded by the Most successful male Group of the 50's by Far
The chorus singing ability is wonderful and the cry of the soul is transmitted.
Beautiful! I loved the Platters all through my school years. I danced to many a school dance to their music!
