You guys said I need to keep trying...Ok, let's do this! I am well aware that this machine is not worth the time that I have put into it, except that it is making interesting youtube content and I am learning a lot (which makes it worth it to me.) If it was a strictly financial decision, I would be best just scrapping it or selling it as a parts machine. I hope you learn something watching, or are at least entertained. Have an awesome weekend folks!
Love the videos. Very educational I always learn something from you. It could be carpentry, mechanical, electrical, black Smith. Amazing. Also love the gun content I went looking on a couple of websites you said full 30 I think it's closed down
well while not financially worth it. everything is repairable. im finding this very educational in how to troubleshooting an old diesel.
We all just know you can't resist fixing something, love your content!
Now it maybe just needs some riding to get smoke a bit healthier.
Happy New Year! Love the remote starter switch!
You kept saying you wanted to see smoke coming out of the exhaust. Well, you got that all right LOL.
And then after the battle to start it it wouldn't stop!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I
Actually kinda lucky it didn't turn into a runaway diesel.
Be careful what you wish for - you may get it...
@@silvergreylion I think strictly speaking, that was Runaway! just at a thankfully low speed and only on #4. It was parasitic burning crank oil even with no fuel feed, fortunately John thinks quick on his feet and was able to choke it out on the intake
59:19 Keep in mind, when tapping the valves stems and the valves getting better seated, that the valve clearance you set before will get smaller again. Then after a few taps, the valve clearance can be completely gone, so the valves won't go any further to the closed positition, because the camshaft rockers are touching the valve stems preventing fully closed valves. So a recheck of the valve clearance is necessary.
Also when heating up the intake manifold, the pressurized gas of the Start Pilote (ether) spray can will cool down immediately the intake again, so you add very flamable fuel, but also lower the intake temperature at the same time. A trick you can use is to use a garden spray bottle filled with some gasoline, and instead of using pure diesel fuel coming from the tank, you can temporary use a mixture of diesel fuel mixed with 10 to 15% gasoline for better combustion.
And last, keep a small sheet of wood or cardboard at hand, in case of a runaway diesel engine. I'm curious how many rpms that engine made at 1:03:14 when hell breaks loose😅
Yep, a little bit of gas will help. So happy to see it run. A good digging session or tow a heavy load for a while with some “rings in a can” additive should help. 👍👍👍
You and Matt at Diesel Creek. I get such a kick out of your excitement when the diesels come alive. I'm VERY impressed, John. I do so appreciate your thinking out loud as you work through everything. Thanks!!
I am fully and emotionally invested in seeing this contraption running now.
Same here.
I hope John rebuilds the engine. It wants to live
I agree, but I don't think we have convinced John yet..... even with the current 282 likes, John's 'signature like' is mysteriously missing from this comment😇😇😇
Anyone else want to see a compression test after it has been ran a bit?
Who cares. go elsewhere..........
@@ericvallandingham5113 if you're like this why are you even here?
@@ericvallandingham5113I tested my compression after getting engines running as the rings free up and sealed better. Plus after a full rebuild to see how close I get to oem.
@@ericvallandingham5113 Nothing for you to see here… move along.
Yes! Good idea! I would love to see the difference now!
YES , rebuild the engine. Heck you pretty much know what you are up against now and I'm learning more and more about diagnosing these old engines. This has been VERY interesting and fun to watch! Thanks for bringing us along Jon. 👍❤️👍
Oh yeah I was laughing and dancing a jig when that old man was resuscitated… Camarata has a challenger that is hilarious 🎉
That was one of the most triumphant will it runs ever. You truly made my day.
This was definitely the best video you could’ve possibly created to end the year.
I don't think I've ever heard you laugh so manically before.
That laugh when you finally got it to run was heart warming! 😂
Haha went from hope to utter panic to maniacal laughter in under 5sec. 😂👌
That laugh brought me joy
@@PhilepZsame. I felt the pure joy in his laughter. It was awesome.
Not sure if someone already said this but add a quart of ATF in the fuel and run that through the engine. That may help the rings. Cylinder 4 probably has a leaky injector. Good work on this machine. Keep running it. It will get better.
Yes that reminds me of my dad telling me that the railroad mechanics use a teaspoon of Ajax to polish or reseat the rings with the individual cylinder wall. Seems to me that diatomaceous earth is an even finer abrasive to use a small amount and start it up. I still use ATF about 1/2 a quart to 20 gallons to keep injectors clean (maybe once a year). My 05 duramax is purring along beyond 270k though the original injectors 😮
Amazing ability to stay motivated and not give up, I woulda been crying and cursing long before she kicked off, nice job.
I must admit I had my doubts. When the old girl started, I was grinning ear to ear and said out loud ok now, cooling system and victory test drive ! She fought hard so it deserves a fitting conclusion. Jon your work arounds always amaze me. I always watch your videos start to finish regardless of length. Well done Sir.
*"IT'S ALIVE!"*
*Cue lightning flash*
Try putting a "good " injector in the smokey cylinder and see if anything changes. Easy for you to do and no cost!
This was a good idea before Jon pulled the cylinder head and pistons. He found broken rings and pistons. No quick fixes on this project. If he can't find pistons for
MUCH LESS then the $650.00 each that he was quoted he should part it out. His vast
number of subscribers should help him find suitably affordable pistons.
Keith Ruckers followers help him find some very obscure parts for his much older machinery.
That excited laughter was worth the price of admission 😅
You gotta keep this going John. It’ll only benefit your channel and your loyalist will naturally watch it.
Feed the algorithm!
Feed the kitty! Inframe rebuild?? Hummm??@@tmscheum
AWESOME!! I think cylinder number 4 is smoking because the injector is leaking/not popping off and spraying correctly. I had a Kubota RTV that had an injector fail and that’s exactly how it behaved. It also sounded awful, like a rod knock. Replaced the injector and it was like new again. Might not be that, but worth a shot
You could confirm this by swapping the #4 injector with another one and see if the smoking moves. Loving this content!
agree
I agree with this. I would swap #4 with one of the other 3 in order to diagnose bad injector or bad cylinder/rings on #4. I know it’s pretty much a lost cause, but if you run her too long with a leaking injector it will get the piston too hot and cause more damage.
Great content John! Happy New Year!!!
This was my first thought.
@@ibdesertdog Why would it be a lost cause? If he gets the injectors worked on it will run great.
That "success scream/laugh" when it finally ran on its own must have been the highlight of the year 😅 it felt like that for me through the screen at least 😁
Number 4 might get better once the oil is changed. If it was leaking fuel into the crankcase then the oil is going to be thinner than it should be and that combined with the rings would make me expect excessive smoke. Good work wrestling that thing into submission. I can imagine how satisfying that must have felt.
This video was hilarious. I laughed out loud when it started and really shared your excitement. The last time I got this excited was when you scrambled for a fire extinguisher with the lift job.
1:05:19 the laugh of a happy man.
I must apologise. I had commented on the previous video that such a small trackloader in that condition will be useless for your purposes and nothing but a headache. It's not just that, but an entertaining headache 😅 It is fun to watch you troubleshoot and breath a little bit of life back into it. Can't wait for the next one!
Hard trying made it possible...this old lady deserves a second live!! Thumbs up for your efforts!!! Staying tuned!!
That poor camera earned it's place in Valhalla! The starter certainly is getting close...
Well now you got to keep going, make it purr again
Send those injectors to Area Diesel for a rebuild. I think you'll get a lot of improvement. Add ATF to the fuel to help those rings loosen up. I think you'll have a usable tractor.
I am a retired desk jockey and know next to nothing about engines of any type, I cannot explain why I am so happy to see that smoke, thanks Jon
Another victory for Big John and Farmcraft Nation. Thanks for working over the holidays and providing us content. That's over and above. The kids have gone back where they belong, the dog has settled down and John comes through with content to go with my coffee.
Hey, great job Jon! It's victories like this that brings out the maniacal cackling in all of us armchair generals! 😂 Seriously though, I think rebuilding the engine even just cylinder hone and rings with new/knurled valve guides and valve seating) would make for some great content! I mean, how much could cylinder honing, a set of rings and valve guides and gasket set run? Heck, make your own gaskets, green paint optional! 😂
By the way, MEK makes a great solvent for fuel injector cleaning. It's getting hard to find the real thing, but you might find some at your local NAPA or Ace hardware.
It is used as a catalyst for hardening polyester resin, which is used for glass reinforced plastic. Try the boating section at your hardware store.
I agree!!! Just do a rough “rebuild” and see what happens.
I am all with this guy!
@@putteificationthat's methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, different stuff. It might rust parts? Just looked west marine web site also shows mek solvent not just mekp catalyst.
A powder coating company I used to work for used MEK to break down the coating on parts that were due for rework, making the flawed coating determinate from the metal to make it far less labor intensive to prep them for recoat. Good stuff. I'm sure it does wonders for the old, varnished fuel in those injectors.
It is probably a fair statement that most people would have consigned this tractor to the scrap bin. The fact that you actually got it running after such a long period of dormancy is a truly amazing achievement. You have earned the right to stand there like a mad scientist and scream "IT'S ALIVE!" over and over again. I vote for a ring job and hope to actually see you using it on the farm in 2024!
I so didn’t want this video to end😅 one of your best videos (and I watched almost all of them), learned a lot while having fun
Bravo to your fortitude for getting it to run. I really enjoyed the process!
Congrats, you can make a dinosaur come back to life! Maybe you can rebuild the water pump? Excellent work
Thank you for burning a few days of good weather to get this running. I didn't realize how emotionally invested I was until you got it started and I shouted - sitting at my desk surrounded by my coworkers. Thanks again.
I`M 90 YEARS OLD WORKED ON MY BOYS AND ALSO MY CARS, WATCHING YOU WORK IS VERY REFRESHING I ENJOY EVERY ONE THANK YOU SO MUCH, I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SEE ANOTHER ONE ON THIS ONE IT WAS SIMPLY GREAT.
Excellent work John! I'm slightly embarrassed that I cheered when you got it running. Can't wait to see what is next!
"John's Towing Service for Heavy Equipment"!
16:57 - Jesus, John! You’re dehydrated!!! No, wait - that’s diesel fuel!! 😂😂😂
I appreciate you for being so thorough and explaining every step in your processes…
I’m sure Mrs. John LOVED this series and likely has to time laundry activities to match up with dozer starts!!
Keep’em coming, brother!!
Dude best part is the panic run ! That was a good laugh not gonna lie.
It maybe "Junk" but what a fantastic video, entertaining, educational and humorous what more could we ask. It was one of the best explanations of a leak down test I've heard thank you. And if you have nothing better to do you could rebuild the engine!
The explanation of what is wrong with where the leaks come from was worth the video.
You definitely had the injection pump in the correct time The first time she fired right up that pore starter though 😂36:00 @FarmCraft101
43:12 That moment we sleep over the problem and change the approach from hope to full determination. Great video!
I must say I've never seen you this happy😂 you were transformed totally, your persistence and innovation was priceless educational and entertaining.
I found myself yelling outloud: "IT´S ALIVE !!! IT´S ALIVEEEE !!!"
Your BEST video yet John. Awesome content.
I have laughed so hard few times in my life... the fire torch to heat the block while spraying water on the smoking starter and using a garden hose to cool the engine.
Man, when it fired with wide open throttle and you scared to death trying to hit the throttle lever to kill the awakened beast in a cloud of uncombusted smoke.
And the evil laugh of success at the end while calling her piece of junk and abomination. Ahahahah it was the climax. You are so fun John 😂😂
And really clever
Haha! Even my wife cheered when it fired up! Good fun John, thanks!
Keep going! Keep going!
One of your most satisfying and informative videos to date!
"I thought it was going to explode there for a second": Runs toward potential explosion.
Your deep dive into this stuff is fascinating John.
This is my favorite go to RUclips channel by a stretch.
Now to get it running smooth and find a good deserving highschool student who can put it to use! :D
@ 1:03.31 I felt the same amount of joy you did! What a great video. I needed this, and you did it! I really appreciate the amount of work and time you put into this. So cool!
You tried your best to frown for the thumbnail but you can't keep the smile out of your eyes with how happy you were with the outcome and what that smoke actually meant
Well done John, she is a runner. I had no dought you would get it running. Thanks for listining and not giving up. Yeah so what next. KEEP GOING ON THIS ONE, I would love to see more. 1. Get that seized water pump un stuck. 2. Will it drive? 3. Will it push dirt? 4. Do an in frame set of rings bare minimum rebuild. Cheers Stew. 😊
When thread or machining aluminum use isopropanol instead of oil for coolant. I've worked with that for more than 30 years. I really appreciates your videos and I wish you and tour family a great new year!
Ethanol works also
I've had pretty good results with Kerosene.
I was almost as happy as you were when it started. Thanks for the video
No lie, I’d watch a year-long series of the rebuild and restoration of this cool little tractor.
That made my day! I knew she’d cheech again, man she’s done a lot of work in her long life I’m sure
Loved that you got it running again John and enjoyed the diagnostics. If I'm honest with myself, I'd love to watch you pull that engine and repair it. However if it was mine, I probably wouldn't bother spending more time and money on it. If you decide to keep going, I'm sure we'll all enjoy coming along for the ride, so it would be worth something at least for the video content. Another plus is that it might be worth something to you on the farm when it's all said and done, but that's a choice only you can make. Whatever you decide, I'll keep watching whatever content you put out. Love the channel! :)
It's amazing how small borescopes are these days. Not long ago, well 11+ years, I was using the huge Olympus IPLEX borescopes on jet engines to inspect compressor and turbine blades. Having to lug that thing 1/4 mile, get it into a man lift, and finally find a way to position it so we could do the inspection was a huge process.
Gotta love technology!
That leak down diagnosis was really enlightening. I love learning about the diagnosis process. Thanks for sharing.
That Starter is screaming for Murcy at that Speed 😂 35:17 @FarmCraft101
I absolutely loved the maniacal laughter. Nice one John, worth carrying on with the engine rebuild and hydraulic reconditioning.
Respect!
Have a great new year
John that was great!!! You gotta keep going with this thing now! Just like you did with the boom lift and excavator..ect hone the cylinders (if not to worn), throw some rings in it. It’s def worth having around and will make great content!!
I have to tell you John that I am oddly interested in seeing you really bring this thing back from the dead. I really don’t have a good explanation for why I feel so invested in it. But congratulations on getting it running. I hope to see you putting some hours on this old girl.
You mean business when the jacket comes off.....Happy New Year from Scotland 🏴
Scary, exciting, and hilarious video! What a ride! Thanks Jon for another great video. I really hope you continue on with it, I'm learning a lot about engines. Also love it when you "Frankenstein" more tools.
Hey John!!! Lovin’ the Free style ‘Free Wheelin Frankilin’ mode on getting water through engine 😂😂
First you couldn't get it started, then you couldn't get it to stop! 🤣 Nice work, John, well done!
What a Hoot! That was so fun to watch, great video John! I can't wait for the next chapter.
Congratulations.
That was pretty cool when it kicked off
Glad you got it figured out, loved seeing your reaction to finally getting it running.
Your jubliation when it finally fires off is delightful.
That laugh! That giggle! Can you do it? Yes you can! Well worth it and a soooo satisfying Man vs Machine video. Not today Machine, not today!
Great content. Love the repair videos.
Always interesting watching the resurrection of old machinery.
Congratulations John, tenacity pays off. I cheered you and clapped when the Old Girl fired.
Farm Craft pays off.
One of my favorite RUclips creators. Had me sitting here grinning like a schmuck at the end. 😂
now put new pistons and rings in it for the next video! :)
You can put your solvent in a glass jar and place it in the ultrasonic cleaner. The glass is resistant to the solvents and allows the waves to go through and clean the parts.
That can cause the glass to break, so keep an eye on it.
You have zero quit in you, Jon. I SO look forward to you replacing the valve sleeves and pistons. reseating the valves and getting rid of all that smoke. SO PROUD OF YOU!!!!
Out fn’ Standing! I really thought that Cat was going to the scrap yard. One of the most satisfying YT videos I’ve seen. Thank you Farmer John!!
I wish I could give you two thumbs up! That was great! Thanks John, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
im going to like this video just biased off the title. Thanks for another one of this loader.
Canadian here. I have heated up frozen vehicles by placing coleman stoves under them. Yes is it dangerous, but sometimes it works. I actually applauded the first time it fired up. Cheers from the land of the ice and snow. ~ulrich
I crack up every time you say " there's your problem lady". Sounds just like my grandfather.
I just started this, I'm glad you kept going, I'm hoping its just some stuck rings.
what a blast, I had so much fun watching you tinker around with this piece of equipment, best two parts, it finally started and you calling it a piece of junk, one of my favorites videos so far.👨🔧
Blessed be thy compression test ,break cleaner and weed torch!
So proud of u man!🍾
Banging on the valves with a mallet was sort of a farmer's xylophone. Great video.
Great to see you back Jon. Hope you all had a great holiday.
On a V8 or any V engine, the cylinders do not sit exactly across from each other, there is one side that sits more forward than the other. that will be your number one cylinder.
Not strictly true. For instance the Merlin engine in the P-51 has one set of bifurcated conrods. The cylinders are exactly opposite.
Loved that laugh right after it started. Keep on fixing the old lady
The evil genius laughing when you got it running was the best part!
Excellent job! I love it when a plan comes together.
Your videos are excellent. The editing is fantastic and the content is second to none. I am glad there are people in the world with ur knowledge and that you give us a window into it. Thank you.
When your good, your good John , that was an amazing year end video, I am 58 and I was cheering like a little kid when it finally ran
An entire video, part 1 and 2, and not a single, "that's not going anywhere". Amazing
Absolutely great video! I feel your exuberance - so much fun to see it start. I can't wait to follow this one.
Merry Christmas , I am glad you did it , like l said, you had enough compression reading in the previous episode which was good enough to have a smoky running engine .
Well done
