    I remember watching Flavio in the worlds and being amazed at his speed and technique.
    I told my BJJ coach at the time about him.
    I'm so glad that he's got world wide recognition.
    His transition standing to ground was amazing, a bit like Katsuhiko Kashiwasaki or Shinya Aoki.

    Flavio is one of the best grapplers out of Brazil. He used to train with a lot of jiu-jitsu athletes including those from the Carlson Gracie Team. He won the middle weight purple best division of the Brazilian Championships in 1994. He said in an interview he stopped competing in BJJ after that because he trained at various BJJ schools and did not want to have to represent one school in competition.

    These instructionals with Canto explain a lot of his success for someone who wasn't in the judo world when he was at the top. His newaza is so creative and smooth, on totally another level compared to majority of judokas. Not to diminsh their skills but his is so good. I can't remember one case where I've seen someone land on the bottom and attack in newaza. I mean often the goal is to defend and for example land on your stomach but that's not always available. So might as well try and make the most of it, surprise the opponent by being dangerous even in that situation.

    How do you get it to work when they stack you after you lift your leg over their head? Or how do you stop them from stacking you?

    • @TocaDoOgro
      @TocaDoOgro Год назад +1

      If you had your lapel grip right, after you step over they will get choked even if trying to stack. I won a gold medal last month with this exact same situation, i was on top, opponent tried to deep half guarf me, i gripped same side lapel and waited for the sweep. As soon as he hip bumped and swept I step over and it was a battle of lapel choke vs stacking.

      @@TocaDoOgro Thank you! That's pretty sweet - congrats on the gold!

      @@eugenebrumley thank you! As a former judo fighter that transitioned to BJJ, I have been using this a lot. One thing I can tell is the detail about undoing the angle after you step over the head is super important. You have to hip escape to step over, getting perpendicular to your opponent. If you stick in this position there is a lot of espace for opponent to push your leg and escape the head. It is fundamental for this choke to get your hip parallel ("in front of") opponent after you step over. That is the great detail that makes this choke work and different from the regular Ashi Jime and (IMHO) makes it a completely different move...

    I can hit the side control canto choke with ease, but when it comes to this one, my leg that is swinging over keeps getting blocked by their free hand. Has anyone tried this move from this position and how are you isolating the free hand that will catch or block the leg coming over?

      A suggestion would be as you’re shielding that arm is to control the sleeve. That way you can shield, pull or pin the wrist (if we are talking about the correct arm). Oss.
