1500m is the track event where Europeans have their best chance - maybe 800 too. 400m and below is dominated by west African heritage, 5000m & above is dominated by East African heritage. You never here this mentioned though 🤔
If I recall Coe simply wasn't race fit and needed more competitions to sharpen up. Basically the selection committee applied the selection rules to the letter as he failed to qualify at the trails. Cram did get through but subsequently had problems.

I think you’re referring to 1990 , Elliot ran a super fast 800 1:42.97 early season , this off the back of winning the commonwealth games 1500 in late January, rather than race again he went back into heavy training and got injured, Elliot believed if he had ran a 1500 then he would have broke auoitas world record , looking back he had been sailing close to the wind pushing himself to the limit and should have just raced , he never saw that kind of form again.
That was an omen. The North Africans were about to begin their take over of distance running. Now, every single world record from the 800 meters to the marathon is held by a North African.

Elliot's coach claimed he had done a 3: 27 for 1500m in training.. I think it was 1992! He got injured and never came back..
