- I traveled to the farm today, to get our crops planted. With the help of my friends and family, I will be working around tractors, other large equipment, lighting giant piles of trees on fire, and finding out the $50,000 engine on our 340 needs to be replaced.

Your dad is running a 16 row planter. That's not chopped liver, he can plant 250 acres a day with support from 1 guy keeping him full. 4 days and beans are done. 4 days and corn is done. That's 2 guys working. Assuming tillage is done. Other guys can focus on tillage and spray. You don't need to rent anything, that's just added expense. Repair what you have, it's always cheaper to repair than replace.
I thought the same thing. For the acres they have, it's not a huge deal I wouldn't think. How hard is it to switch a planter from beans to corn? Millenial farmer only has one planter.
I was trying to figure that one out? Just let him plant it with the old White planter. But if I remember right something he said this season was I believe that planter is only set up and can only plant beans? Not sure why...I'm not a farmer but have an ok grasp about some of this stuff though. But I did think just go old school and let dad plant it with the 16 row. Someone even said get the old JD and hook it to the 24 row said they did it but had to put triples on it cause it lost traction.
@@natevanlandingham1945 Most planters have, in a place like Iowa where he is at, both corn and bean planting parts. I bet dad has the corn parts needed. Cole wants to be super efficent with all computer controlled stuff. Maybe this year it won't happen, it's not the end of the world. Example, with all the rain we've had I have not planted a seed, so it could be worse.
@@norm-nas I would have assumed that. Knowing it would be crazy to have a planter that could only plant beans. Especially since that's the one DC used with his dad. I'm sure it serves double duty for years for them!

I like Roman. Watching him adapt to farming vs. carpentry is proving to be interesting. He's fast on the uptake, you can tell. You explain something to him, and he's got it down. He thinks things through, and utilizes common-sense. His English continues to improve.

I am praying you can get the tractor situation resolved quickly.
Main issue with those FPT engines is believed to be casting sand left in the block from when they were manufactured which comes loose and moves to the liners, this then due to engine vibration rubs on the o-rings between said liners and block and destroys the o-rings and causes an internal coolant leak into the sump. In some scenarios, whilst destroying the o-rings it has also rubbed into the block and made it too rough for the o-rings to seal. Then you’re up for a whole new engine.
Hey Cole a few years ago we had a 2013 290 case magnum with the same exact problem. Mid seeding it started to over heat and we noticed low coolant and high oil level. Next day the dealership came out and drained the oil and put in this additive that swells the o rings and prevents coolant getting in the oil. (More of a bandaid fix) but that allowed us to finish seeding with it and ended up trading tractors. Hope you find a fix to it and can get in the fields soon. Good luck this year!

Case ih has known about the issue since 2014 and have had the fix for it. I had my law student wife send case a letter explaining this 3 years ago and they supplied a new engine and we just paid for labour and we were out of warranty.
FYI I'm in Australia and initially case didn't want to know anything about it.

Although not ideal… the cost of repair is tolerable but the timing is what causes the worry! Hang in there Cornstars, you’ll weather this storm…. That’s what farm folks do.
The trouble is stuff usually only breaks when you're using it. When he said "antifreeze in the hydraulics" I thought "That's a weird thing to happen... but should be a relatively easy fix". However, antifreeze in the engine oil is another matter entirely - sounds like it's cracked a liner.

None of what they grow is for human consumption. Either livestock feed or ethanol.
@@peteparker7396 Are you claiming that meat production is not part of the food chain? And a significant percentage of the corn that is sent to the ethanol plant ends up as feed in the meat, egg and dairy portion of the food chain. Only the starches/sugar components of the corn kernel are used to produce ethanol. The remaining parts are a high protein feed source referred to as dried distiller grains. That has significant value in is sold to feed producers.
@@peteparker7396you have no idea where the corn goes a lot of it goes to further processing to make refiner syrups that go in food well food or candy and as was suggested in the other gentleman's comment any of the leftover byproduct from making a refiner syrup or glucose or fructose also is fed to livestock to them produce food so yes his corn produces food. Not to mention every soybean they grow ends up being food in the human food chain. Whether it's from being fed to livestock or eating directly by people. 😂😂
Had same issue with 235 two years ago. Neighbor had it rebuilt in a week or so. $9000. In frame and used the old pistons. Put another 1200 on it so far
Fascinating, you are bringing to the uneducated the day to day issues of the farmer. As a non farmer it is very interesting all power to the plough.
That engine is known to have bad orings. We have a 290 with the same engine in it. We had to put a new short block in it. Had about the same amount of hours on it too. That was 2 years ago. Case IH did cover quite a-bit of the bill since it’s been a well known issue.
What years was that engine used and a problem?
My case 310 had the o-rings fail last year with about 2700 hrs on it last year,case dint cover nothing cause it was it out of the PIP they had on them
Get a hold of your Case Dealers Service Rep. there is still Help from Case on this it is a case by case decision this is from substandard o rings on the cylinder

Hope Cole takes your advice. Let the dealership know the two year old tractor was well maintained and should never have antifreeze in oil.

Time to run the 4840 and 16 row planter 24/7 to get it done! At 250 acres per day you'd have 2000 acres planted in 8 days.

I used to plant 100 acres a day with an 806 on a ridgetill planter. Should easily be able to get 250 or 300 with a 16 row.

You're not going to hurt that engine anymore. Change the oil and filter, and use it. It'll only leak when it's cold out. When it's running the o rings expand. The sleeve isn't broken. I ran my 340 for nearly a year before a new short block was installed. CIH should pay for it anyway. Paid for mine.
Hi from oz. I had jd 3350 years ago that on day had grey oil (that's mixed water in oil) Because we needed it to work and engine had to be rebuilt (done about 6500 hrs) we kept using it till work was finished.
I remember something about reprogramming it to put out more power.... probably by dumping more fuel, which increases pressures and does lots of things. Run it. What's the worst that can happen? End up needing a new engine???

Hey Cole, a good machine shop should be able to machine the block square, machine out the sleeves and re-sleeve the block and re-assemble for far below new cost. I suggest keeping the engine around for a swap down the line if you still buy a new one. It'll be money well spent when your 340's new engine gets tired.
With it running and getting hot apparently under some load with antifreeze in the oil all the internal parts are junk. He’s better off getting a complete new short block at a minimum. When you go that deep into a tractor you don’t cut corners. There is too much labor cost to have to do it twice.
Hey Cole, I have a Cummins in one of my tractors. It dropped it's coolant into the oil. Turned out a previous owner hadn't used corrosion inhibitor in the coolant and some frost plugs in the head under the tappet cover had corroded through. This allowed coolant through a frost plug to come out on top of the head and then to just flow down through a pushrod cavity into the sump. We had the head off before we found the problem but we could have repaired it by just removing the tappet cover. Could be worth checking out. Alan from NZ
First thing you have to do is contact Case IH dealer to see if they'll pay for part of the Rayman engine that will get dropped in it because this is a known problem with these tractors and they've replaced engines in a lot of them some guys for no cost.
@@Otherrandomguy42 you are right. Ideally they should have had a recall and fixed, but unfortunately it seems like on the ag business unless it is a safety issue recalls rarely happen. They hope you won’t say anything and pay the bill and then only pay the ones that complain
Your oil cooler could also dump large amounts of coolant into your engine oil.
As a business owner of a concrete restoration company, I can relate to cutting $50, $60, $70,000 checks on a regular basis. I definitely got your beat on payroll. Mine runs about sixty thousand a week.

My husband’s grandparents had a small farm when he was young. His grandmother for years churned butter by hand. His grandfather had to do it once. The next day it was motorised. Loved hearing DC’s story about the lift on the seed machine.

I've worked some hellish retail years-- working on off days, 12 hour days, putting up with the general public, visits from big-wigs where we had to burn the midnight oil to get ready for the inspection so that the bigwigs could delude themselves that we could maintain a 100,000 square foot on the hours we were budgeted, but it looks like a walk in the park compared to farming!

My one word of advice do not take chances it’s not worth it and usually they don’t pan out. You can take a chance to buy a lottery ticket but that’s about it. Stay safe be careful.

We had something similar happen to our John Deere because they decided to use inferior parts in their engines. Fortunately, the dealer tech caught it and had time to repair before we really needed it and didn't have to rent another one. Unfortunately, it was about a $30k bill and it's not easy to just swap planting tractors with today's technology and different setups.

I'm in South Central Iowa. We've had several tornadoes and several rain events, just long enough to soak in. During the day, it's been sunny with a perfect breeze. The last 2+ years, we haven't had the rain we've desperately needed. With all the inches of rain in the last 3+ weeks, we're nearly caught up to even out the moisture. Anything after the next week will be for this year. Only a farmer would understand that word salad. But, it's great to have a nearly normal spring. Only 2 days of storms. It cooled slightly, but not nearly as low as expected. 😊

We have a long block for that sitting in our hangar for that very problem. When ours went bad we just had the original block pulled and a new long block from Case put in. Took the original block, had it rebuilt and it has been sitting in our CC'd equipment hangar as a backup in case it happens again.
When done with beans , convert the White planter back to corn & keep planting !

Wow, if only the public knew the hardship that farmers have and things break down and their crops, don’t go right and the weather. There’s so many multiple problems. Cole , very sorry to hear about the engine issues on the 340. Since it is a known issue with CASE try contacting your local CASE dealer and see if maybe they could work a deal. It is not like you are never giving them advertising and assisting one of their most popular CASE farmers could go a long way for them. Especially since big Green turn their back on you. Worth a shot. Good luck.

The 340 situation happened to me also a few years ago , and it was also my planter tractor , what I ended up doing till we installed a new block was going too CNH and getting a few jugs of coolant conditioner , it will probably seal the coolant leak in the engine till your done planting, well worth the try before doing anything else

Be sure to check there is no oil cooler that could be damaged had a friends dad get and engine rebuilt only to find out its not that.

The O rings are probably bad on the sleeves. Take the oil pan off and pressurize the cooling system and look at the sleeves, you may see water dripping off the bottom of the sleeves. You may get by with replacing the O rings.
Coolant in the oil sucks. I suggest pulling an oil sample 3/4 through the oil change interval possibly catching problems early. I’ve caught coolant issues twice by sampling. Good luck this year
Keep the planter running with 2 guys. I plant a lot more acres with 1 planter a lot more moving and smaller fields. Just keep rolling and less whining
The component added to the seed tender auger is called a linear actuator.

My understanding is more water soluble fertilizer will not benefit yield, may actually cause yield drag. May cause them to be top heavy and more susceptible to heat, low moisture, and high winds due to lagging root development in early stages. It will be interesting to see. I am having a similar issue this year... I applied extra N and K for spring and my brassicas would have died if not for extra irrigation and rain... I got good early development but after fruiting they just lagged and now I am fighting to keep the bugs off till they all finish.
