    Thanks Roy for the video, coming from Southport, my next door neighbour knows the current family owner of the Silcocks fair on Southport pier. The Silcock person owns a huge private collection of the old penny slot machines, from their traveling fair ground days. At the front of Southport pier is the horse carousel of which Silcocks also own.

      Hi Alan, from what I can gather and from reading what little bit of info is available online regarding the history of Silcock's Fairs it would appear that the various sons/grandsons of the original Silcock brothers no longer work together with each branch of the family now running their own separate Fun Fair businesses using a variant of the Silcock name.

    In the past I have helped out john and aurthur silcocks.
    Iam myself decent from a showman family.
    But my dad was not concieved on the gaff or passed on to him. Its a shame too.
    Thank you for a brilliant upload.
    Silcocks did start outside the pits in wigan with the cans stall. So when the miners were going home. They would try their chances at knocking off the cans.
    Even their wifes got in on the act selling food.
    The brothers started off with a switchback a set of galloppers a barrell organ.

    A fitting tribute, coming from Hindley I well remember Silcocks fairs and had great fun on them, I have however not heard of the 'Thriller' ride. I look forward to learning what it actually was.

      Thanks Duncan I also remember Silcock's Fairs but mainly being on St Pats playing field near the canal in Ince and Wigan Rovers playing field in Poolstock. To be fair (no pun intended) I could have misread the name of the attraction on the headstone that I called the 'Thriller' as I didn't want to walk on the grave and my eyes are not what they once was. Lol. But it does appear to be 'Thriller'.

      @@MrHsHotPot on the Memories of Hindley facebook page there is a picture of the Thriller fair ground ride , its type of speedway/Noah's ark type thing (I would put the picture on here but I don't know how to do it) it says it was built by Orton and Spooner in Burton on Trent the illustration shows the ride which has Silcock Brothers signage on it.

    I used to fit headstones for critchleys but I am not sure if I fitted that one. If you look on the back you should see the name of the fitter. Some will have a anchor sign on the back to show its been fitted up to standard.

    • @MrHsHotPot
      @MrHsHotPot  4 года назад

      I didn't look if the headstone had the name of the monumental masons who fitted it engraved on it Jason, but Varty's, R Banks & Son Ltd and G Swift are the usual monumental mason names that you'll find on headstones in the cemeteries of Wigan fitted from around this era. Never seen or took notice of the anchor symbol on headstones before and know for a fact that my late mother's headstone does not have one engraved on it but I will keep an eye out for it on other notable headstones in the future. 👍

    Roy I remember Arthur coming to the Shevy rec in his fancy caravan, like the one on his grave stone, he used to keep bantam chicken in one of its lockers
    He always wore a bowler hat and use to go in to the plough for a drink, one of the Silcock lives in Eccleston and his long legged wife drives around in a convertible Bentley>
    Made a video a few years ago of Hindley Cemetery and you can see Arthurs grave @ 2 minutes
    Lads growing up fast

      From the little bit of research I did for this video Mick, it would appear that the various sons/grandsons of the original Silcock brothers no longer work together and each branch of the family now runs their own separate Fun Fair business using a variant of the Silcock name. I suppose a lot of the old traditions such as living in the caravans etc. have disappeared with each generation but then again I don't live as my father did. It's just progress I suppose. Yes Toby is bouncing on he'll be 9 months old in just over a weeks time, doesn't seem two minutes since I was making the video announcing that I was going to be a dad!

    Funny mr h you worked for silcocks the builders I ust to work for Vartys funeral directors and silcocks shared the yard. Small world it is.

    • @MrHsHotPot
      @MrHsHotPot  4 года назад

      What year(s) did you work for Bill Varty Gareth? I worked for Mick Silcock back end of 1991 until the back end of 1992 when old Bill Silcock was still alive and I remember that there was a Gary working for Varty's back then. You're not the same one are you?

    • @garethparr649
      @garethparr649 4 года назад +1

      88-95. Yes there was and still is a Gary I’m Gareth remember old bill Wendy and Michael very well.

    • @MrHsHotPot
      @MrHsHotPot  4 года назад

      Well we'll have certainly passed each other on the yard behind Delph Haven in the short time that I worked for Mick Silcock Gareth. I once helped Gary move a stiff when the rest of you were out on a job and it left me feeling quite queasy for the rest of the day as I recall! Lol. You'll probably remember Eddie McSorley then? He's the guy that I was working with when I almost met Fred Dibnah down at Trencherfield Mill that time that I talk about in another video. The more I think about it your name does ring a bell but I just can't seem to put a face to you as it's so long ago. In another 'it's a small world' twist my cousin married the guy who used to work for Bill Varty but left to set up his own funeral business around that time. I can't remember his name as I'm not close to my cousin but I think they are divorced now.

    • @garethparr649
      @garethparr649 4 года назад +1

      Mr H's Hot Pot remember Eddie very well. I never got called my birth name in 7 years I worked there i always got called Gary for some reason so it was big Gary n little Gary I was little Gary. And I think the name who married your relation was called billy craddock. Do you remember a lad from spring view working for silcocks called Carl? He didn’t last long billy silcock called him that daft lad.

    • @MrHsHotPot
      @MrHsHotPot  4 года назад

      Now I remember you Gareth it's funny how you forget little details over time until your memory is jogged. Yes you're right it was Billy Craddock my cousin married. I don't remember Carl as he was before my time. Besides Eddie there was another guy working for Mick Silcock when I was there called 'Chris Hooper' from Coppull who was Mick's cousin and only got the job because Bill or Wendy's sister had called in a family favour but he was a good lad and a hard grafter. Sadly I was only on a YTS apprentice scheme when I worked for Mick and after it ended he couldn't afford to keep me on. But no hard feelings and I have some good memories from that time.

    Not sure but didn't they have a base in Hindley with a few caravans on and all their fairground rides, wagons generators etc stored for the winter months ?

    • @MrHsHotPot
      @MrHsHotPot  4 года назад +1

      Yes Alec, you are right they did, although I'm not 100% sure of the exact location in Hindley where it actually was but I seem to have some vague recollection of it being where the Tesco Supermarket now stands but I could be wrong.

      @MrHsHotPot  4 года назад

      Interesting info Jason, tbh I was unaware that he had passed away as the old school Wrestlers such as Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy seemed to fade from the publics interest and collective conscious with the end ITV's World of Sport with Dickie Davis in the mid 80's. May have to pay Agecroft Cemetery a visit at some point in the future to see if I can locate his grave.
