  • I just bought this 2005 Subaru Forester that doesn't start. Come along as we see whats wrong and and then begin to repair the problem.
    If you have not watched the video I will spoil it here slightly.
    The timing belt is broken and the head gaskets are leaking. Lets go ahead and start removing the engine starting with all the mounting hardware underneath the vehicle.
    Bellhousing - 6 bolts and 2 nuts plug one extra nut on the bottom of the starter all 14mm
    Motor mounts - 2 nuts down below 14mm
    Exhaust manifolds - 3 nuts on each side, 6 total, one bolt on the hanger near the transmission, watch the oxygen sensor wiring if you drop the exhaust down all 14 mm
    skid plate- 4 bolts and some push pins 12mm
    unplug cooling fans
    thermostat housing- 2 bolts 10 mm have a coolant drain bucket ready
    unhook transmission cooler lines amzn.to/33Lg57H
    drain engine oil

    Nice little find. Those engines are pretty easy to pull.
    Those clamps are neat, I've never seen them before. Looking forward to part 2.

    My 2000 outback just quit on me on mother's Day... In the pouring rain. A little bit of oil seems to have leaked out and I cannot get it to start again. I had a small crack in the radiator, so it got a little warm, but nothing serious. This video was really great and gave me some ideas. Nice job filming and editing and describing what you are doing. I am in Colorado also, maybe I'll bring my car to you? Hahaha!

      The biggest problem is how expensive these Subaru’s are to fix. I have three at the shop right now needing head gaskets and other small repairs but all three estimate were between $2000-3000.
      One of the cars is so beat up I didn’t expect the owner to approve the work. They said they love the car and use to go rafting and mountain climbing.
      Not sure what caused your no start but there are a few things that see often. The timing belt may have failed or jumped time just like in the video. This is the most common failure. I’ve only replaced one or two fuel pumps so that is unlikely but still a possibility. A component on the timing belt or serpentine belt may have failed causing the engine to turn over too slowly to start up. If it got hot enough the engine may have been damaged internally and could have low compression.
      Hope you can get it figured out. If you are located in southern Colorado and need to take it to a shop let me know. Chad@thepracticalmechanic dot com

    For $300 you'll do alright no matter what it is. I enjoy project car work so I'll be back to see what it takes to get this running.

    No crank no start I just got done doing one Subaru all you need is a 10 mm swivel head with extension and a 3/8 ratchet and you can do it between the belts and change out your crank position sensor and your other present position sensor locate on the driver side should start rate up

    Great presentation style. Clear and concise instructions! Enjoyed the vid, I like getting project Subarus as well. I'm currently struggling with an 03 forester that I did a head gasket job on. It cranks but will not start. I've got fuel and spark, and reset the timing twice to make sure I'm not off. The car ran before I tore it down. I can't figure out what is missing. Any ideas? I installed a new coil pack and crank sensor for starters, still no dice.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  3 года назад +3

      Better check compression. If the timing was off the first time it was setup the valves may have come in contact with the pistons causing them to bend.
      When you say fuel do you mean fuel pressure or the fuel
      Injectors are firing? Do you have the fuel lines connected properly?

    • @stvnswld
      @stvnswld 3 года назад +1

      @@ThePracticalMechanic I am getting fuel into the cylinders, the plugs are getting wet. Hoses are on correctly. I need to buy a compression tester and I will check that. Could my cylinders be washed out perhaps?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  3 года назад +1

      @@stvnswld it’s possible. You could always unplug the injectors and crank it over for a bit to see if it fires up.

      Compression was good, found my problem. Rookie mistake, I had the wrong cam gear on the drivers side! She fired right up today! Thanks for the replies.

    I'm just putting my 2005 back together, and thought the braided ground straps were on the bottom of the engine from the heads to the frame, but don't see any threaded areas on frame to attach them. I don't see them in your video either. Do you know where these go?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 месяцев назад

      Yes there is normally one on each head and they go to the bottom of the “frame”. Not all of them still have them installed. If I get one in the shop soon I’ll take a look and snap a picture.

      these are interference engine with a high probability of piston to valve damage. Some will run just by installing a belt but many will have a misfire from the bent valves.

    Is there a way to check engine and vin # to find out if it's the original engine in 05 Forester

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Год назад

      There are numbers stamped near the case half seam on top of the engine but I’m not sure if any part of the vin number is included there. There is also numbers stamped on the bell-housing flange of the motor near the torque convertor access hole.

    Why does the cruise control and engine light come on at the same time on a 2005 subaru forester can you help

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Год назад

      People ignore the engine lamp all the time so more and more vehicles are lighting up multiple lamps and disabling features whenever there is a fault code stored in the engine control module.

    I have a 2004 Subaru Forester XT and it is doing the same thing as the one in the video the motor is turning over but not starting and it just started to do this after I put new igniting coil packs and spark plugs on it could you please possibly help me out and give me some pointers on what it could be and yes my Subaru Forester is a turbo

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Год назад

      If it was running before the tune up I would go back over your work. Make sure the coils are plugged into the correct harnesses and make sure the wires are not missing insulation. I have seen the turbo models short the ignition control wires to the valve cover because the underhood heat causes the wiring insulation to fail.
      Why did you install new coils and plugs? maintenance or upgrade? Where you having any issues before? Any noises? check engine light or engine codes?

      Same thing happened to my 2006 subaru Forrester. Just changed the sparkplugs, coil pack, and coil wires. Had no problems starting before. But a day after installing the coil system. Every morning it has been having trouble starting (especially Temps below 50). After jump starting it runs well throughout the day. Took battery to auto zone they said battery is good. Just bought last year.
      Changed the coil pack because it was misfiring and arcing. Pls help been a frustrating 2 weeks

      @@tonyh1013I saw in forums that Subarus does not like aftermarket ignition coil. Did you replace your with an aftermarket one? I heard this is a common issue with aftermarket ignition coil and once you change it back to OEM subaru ignition coil it may start working normally again during cold temps. Please update us here if it works for you. For others with the same issue
