May be the most idiotic booing of a player I've ever heard, and there have been some bad ones. They booed him because a couple of moronic media guys claimed, without any verification or sourcing, that Ohtani was on a flight to Toronto to sign with the team. Ohtani did nothing to offend the fans there, and never uttered a remotely negative word about the team or the city. That said, I appreciate that their hearts weren't really in it, and flipped quickly to cheer him when he hit the HR. I've generally considered the Blue Jay fanbase underrated and one of the better ones in baseball.

I'm an American who lived in Vancouver BC for 5 years. I enjoyed my time there, but there was one thing that got to me after my first year of residence. Being from a South Orange County beach city, I missed the sun. So as much as I loved Vancouver, I missed home even more. So you can't blame Shohei for wanting to remain in Southern California. I mean given a choice between sun and warmth/dry versus overcast cloud cover and cold/wet, that's a no brainer (just look at all the snowbirds who escape to the "sunny south" during the winter season). I was in the 500s (basically the top of the stadium) and the boos were deafening even up there. It was to do with the perceived notion that Ohtani used Toronto (and other teams to a lesser degree) to jack up his payday in LA. That combined with the perception he was on a plane to Toronto (which of course was not his fault) led Jays fans to think him playing for the Jays was a done deal.

His coach and teammates booing him show their love and respect for that man. They weren't doing it out of spite. However, the booing from some of the Toronto Blue Jay fans is just spiteful jealousy because he didn't come to play for their lackluster team. Shohei going from the Angels to the Blue Jays would not have been an improvement, but it was just par for the road. However, he needed to go from the Angels to the Dodgers to achieve a World Series game.
