Cherokee Trout Fishing

- Cherokee, North Carolina, offers some of the best trout fishing in the Eastern United States. And, even with nearly 50,000 trout permits sold to fish on the famous Cherokee Indian Reservation each year, there's still plenty of trout to go around thanks in part to an aggressive stocking program managed and operated by the tribe.
Team Pautzke arrived in town in early fall when fishing pressure was low to sample the rainbow trout fishery and found excellent action while filming this edition of Pautzke Outdoors roughly 15 minutes from Cherokee.
Our success came exclusively on Balls O Fire salmon eggs. We walked the bank with a backpack loaded with Gold Label, Silver Label, Yellow Jackets and Orange Deluxe eggs and switched off every 15 minutes. All the eggs worked extremely well. However, as the trout became conditioned to one color we switched, which induced fresh strikes.
Editor’s Note: A North Carolina fishing license isn’t required to fish in Cherokee. However, a tribal permit is. They are $10 per day and come with a whopping 10-fish limit. For more information please visit www.fishcherokee.com.

My daughter and I caught 14 today. Great looking rainbow trout. 9 to 14 inches.
best place is right behind the casino in that little stream just go right up and find those calm spots in the current
and the big one on the stringer was exactly 6 pounds and the best part is everybody in our group of 12 had at least one of those 6 pounders if not a little bigger... great times
Would love to see you guys fish Lake Taneycomo in south east Missouri. One of the best trout fisheries in Missouri!
+Landon Brack We are on it! It's on the list.
Last year i was with my family there we were at the swing on big cove rd. I caught 3 trout in one little pool with rooster tails then one of the coolest things happen 4 massive elk came into the river and drank a few minutes and walked off but we all caught fish while we were there i will be going soon i will report back

Not on the Cherokee fisheries... Its catch and release only lol.
Can't release fish anymore. Just went yesterday and they updated the laws. Also they are going to close the season for 2 weeks the last of March and open up again April 1st.
Catches brook trout, slams him head first into the rocks and dirt: "That's what fishin's all about!"
I am from Asheville and I am going fishing in Cherokee tomorrow wish me luck
Get em!
Through the whole weekend I caught 7 and my cousin caught 4 pretty good and my biggest was 18 inches and almost 3 pounds and my cousins biggest was 20 inches and 4 pounds!
If I have a NC fishing license am I good to go to fish in Cherokee or being on the reservation I need a different license/pass to fish in Cherokee?
A tribal permit is required. They are $10 per day.
Need to trout fishing soon. Are there any good spots near the casino. And when is the best time? Would love to take my sons..get them into fishing
They stock the pools in front of the casino.
@@TeamPautzke thanks for the info. Hope to get out there this spring with my kids. $10/10 keepers? Good deal
This is a nice spot!! What road is this spot on???
there was actually I year about 4 or 5 years back that they stocked the river with absolute giants there wasn't one fish out of the 10 on my stringer that was under 2 1/2 pounds
Is that hwy 441 going north of Cherokee???
It's on the road from Cherokee on towards the fish hatchery
Thank- you!! I'm planning a trip there in next March!
Pautzke Bait that’s Big Cove rd. That leads to the hatchery. Love your videos, I’ve used salmon eggs for over 40 years trout fishing in SC and NC. Mix red or pink with 1 kernel of corn. Trout go crazy! Funny thing happened to me while I was fishing the underpass bridge on big cove rd , we were using eggs and corn , just eggs. Crickets. Catching only a few 12-18 in fish. A guy came walking up the trail with a 5lb bow on a stringer! I ask him what he got it on, he side if you want to catch big fish here use night crawlers! I put one on and in less than 5 minutes I landed a 6 1/2 lb brown! My biggest trout ever! On a 5ft ultra light rod with 4 lb test! Great day in Cherokee!!
Where is this bridge located?
Do they stock bass aswel?
Tyler's MotoVlogz nope
No they don't
was wondering what road that bridge is on
Josh Mccraven did you ever figure out what road this is?
Big cove rd? Maybe?
Its the last bridge on big cove rd
Chattanooga has trout that's were I lived
Do you remember the name of the creek?
Dinsmore Outdoors I'm fairly sure it was the ocanulufty river
Thank you very much for the reply!
what kinda float u use

Well latest report on Cherokee trout fishing, for the last 2 years they have reduced their stocking program. The average fisherman can expect to catch 2 maybe 3 fish a day and most are on average 12 to 14 inch fish. Not worth the time it takes to drive to Cherokee or all the expenses involved to fish these waters.
Noah - we've caught limits every time we've been there whether there's been a recent stocking or not.
And when was the last time you were there? Apparently not last year or this year. 2 straight years of low stocking numbers. Sad but true.
I’m here now. Been here since Saturday. Tried on two mornings for about 4 hours apiece and 6/7 different holes along the road designated as “enterprise trout waters”. I haven’t caught anything, haven’t talked to anyone that’s caught anything, haven’t even seen a fish in the water. Local fly shop, when I asked about the tribal fishing areas, directed me to the Natl Park. So not sure what’s going on, but’s it’s dried up.
@@kbnep1914 Been trout fishing for 41 years now. Went there this summer and it was sad at best. Fished 3 days caught 6 fish. Talked to probably 30 other fisherman and they too had not caught anything. Many were fishless in a 2 day period. Not sure where you are catching 10 to 30 fish but it sure isn't along the raven fork or bunches creek. I don't know, maybe dynamite would help.
15 minutes from Cherokee would be Bryson City?
and maggie valley
Have you been to the end of big cove road? It’s at least 15 minutes from down town and still Cherokee!
@@illuminatedcrosshairs7865 Indian only fishing big fine
Well for the third straight year trout fishing in Cherokee has been very dismal at best. Made 6 trips now this year. The first trip netted 2 fish in 2 days. Trip 2 netted 0 fish in 2 days. Trip 3 netted 0 fish in 1 day. Trip 4 1 fish in 2 days. Trip 5 0 fish in 1 day. Trip 6 2 fish in 1 day. The problem with videos like this one is that the waters had just been stocked thus making it appear as if there are just monster trout numbers. Totally a false representation of the river. I know you will delete this comment as you can't have the truth getting out. But at least I have the guts to be honest.
Jim,
Thanks again for watching. Keep in mind - this water is public water for anyone who buys a day permit. And, they stocked it weekly, as advertised. We aren't paid by the reservation - we are day use anglers - just like you.
@@TeamPautzke Yes I realize it is public waters. While I was there this year I talked to hundreds of other fisherman and everyone was reporting the same results. Many people had gone and stayed a full week and were fishless or maybe 1 or 2. There is no way they are stocking the numbers with the frequency they are reporting.
Or you just had bad luck? Blame it on the river LOL
