In Australia, because of our consumer protection laws, car companies cannot void the warranty on the car if you service it somewhere other than the dealer, as long as you follow their service recommendations, as detailed in the owners manual. The design and specs do look great to me. Price? -- much better than expected. Look of it, the size of it --- I like it too! Real life will teach me the minuses of it! Judging by the Atto 3 reliability (34K km. on the clock) -- I am hoping for the best. The Seal is my second car from BYD that I am buying without seeing it in real life. Of course, my test drive will have to convince me finally? Didn't have one yet! Still, hoping for the best! And only Premium will do for me. Big battery = big draw card in my book. And power for spare? = good to have! Any time. VtoL is essential too! What to dislike in the package? I can't see it! Greetings Ben. Adam from Adelaide. Bye.
Same here in Hobart, I'll probably go for the premium, but want to test drive the performance. I really don't need the extra power and whilst I know the advantages of AWD - having owned 3 Subarus and a Mazda CX-7 I think I'll pass on the AWD and save 10 grand. Of course, with the power output of the performance, AWD would be pretty much mandatory. I wouldn't want to be behind the wheel of that amount of power going to just 2 wheels. We also have an Atto 3. 2 weeks old, the wife loves it, but the bells need winding back a little, gets a bit nanny on the road.

Same price as Australia for the BYD seal in European markets (using the exchange rate 1AUD to 0.60EURO) will sell well so about 30k Euro or less even 25k. As the euro to bank is much more desirable than the aussie dollar
In my perspective, if BYD can sell this affordable price in Australia, then there is no way they set such a high price in Europe just to sabotage their sale and image, I think there might be something that would not let them settle the price they desire. Even New Zealand price it $10,000 more, I think it really is the local policy that restricts the BYD price
I don't really think the lack of clearcoat on the underside of the bonnet is a major (or may be even minor) issue. I just checked our 2016 Polo (made in South Africa) and our 2014 Golf (made in Germany) and I'm pretty sure they haven't any clear coat on the underside of the bonnet. The white paint looks slightly shinier but doesn't appear to be coated with clearcoat. I think the black Seal is just a bit more matt under the bonnet. Perhaps they could have used a slightly glossier paint?
Heard somewhere South African cars aren't safe. Two Nissans were tested and the one made in South Africa was a deathtrap. Not surprised with your polo.
I think the biggest con of the BYD Seal is the ADAS system. I think the ADAS system is not as well designed, confidence inspiring or robust as compared with those in the Tesla, BMW, Hyundai, etc.
Why on earth hasn't the industry used the ev as the opportunity to change the stupid drive selector so that drive and reverse are in the correct direction.
Please show me a vehicle sold in Australia today that will have its warranty valid if the vehicle isn’t serviced as recommended (dealer or third party)? There isn’t one. All vehicles must be serviced accordingly to manufacturer’s recommendations to keep your warranty valid. And that’s a great thing. Why should everyone else pay for you who neglects a vehicle and you get a warranty for not taking car of your vehicle. Ridiculous whomever thinks that you should be given the warranty without any service requirements.
I love the Omeo hwy it's a great road on a motorbike. I might have to check out how many chargers are in the area and take my MG4 for a drive down there.

My biggest drawback of the Seal is the trunk. I would like to have a lift back.
@ according to the reports in china after Munich auto show, where Seal U was showcased, it is a modified version of Song Plus for the international market. Song L is bigger than Song Plus. My guess is that this modified version means Song L. I have seen EVERY model model BYD has in person. there isn't a Song model between and Plus and L versions.
Most people knew BYD's expertise in making batteries. Some may not know that BYD is also among the top 10 Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) in the world, and the only one that also makes cars. It has for many years designed and manufactured products for Apple, Nvidia, Nokia, Motorola, EVGA etc. Given such industry expertise, their cars having good quality electronics should be well expected.
Hi there, no. I have had a Bluetti, but I prefer this one that yiou see here which is an Allpowers R600. Fantastic. Well made. Reliable. Used it for many hours now. :)
Ben, as a follow up to my earlier comment re real world motorway range, I'd like to add a comment about European ev's. Many of the more affordable ones are simply ICE vehicles repurposed as ev's. European ev's also sort of fall into two camps, viz: 1) very expensive and, 2) affordable but low range. As a general rule, all European ev's suffer from poor functionality electronics. If you know SAPs you'll know how German industry loves complexity and this flows into their operator interfaces. Tesla and the Chinese manufacturers eat the European systems for breakfast - though the Chinese are still finessing their products to suit European ways. The problem for BYD in Europe is price - it's too high for a start-up brand in a crowded and Eurocentric market.
Great points. I like your comments. I like that Europe is as you say, Eurocentric. It makes it a more competitive place, and as much as some European brands suffer with reliability, they are pretty stunning to drive and own.
Didn't spray clear coat? Well, there are only two options: 1) They used direct gloss (2k clear and paint in one) or 2) They sprayed a matte clear coat.
Wondering what the front bumper clearance is like? I have a steep driveway entrance from the road for about 3 or 4 metres before it levels out almost flat instantly at a join. I don't want to scrape the under area of the front bumper at this place. I notice EV's for some strange reason don't have the hard plastic strip under the front bumper that sort of alerts you to low clearance by scraping the ground without necessarily scraping the main bumper, so any scrape in these cars means you've damaged the underside of the bumper. I'll test drive a demo to check the clearance is acceptable before I make any final purchase decision. Would the 19" wheels (premium and performance models) increase the clearance over the 18" wheels (entry level variant), or do they adjust the clearance (suspension) to be about the same with either wheels? The price of the three available Seal variants here in Australia are priced extremely competitive. One advantage of not having a local car industry anymore I guess? Looking to get the premium RWD, unless I can convince myself to go for the AWD and spend an extra 10k and have all that extra power I really don't need. 🙂 We also have a new Atto 3 (2 weeks old) and the wife loves it. I quite like it as well! Although it does have that SUV driving feels to it - as expected, I guess.
For me, and I would imagine for most people, no, I don't think it is worth the extra money. The Premium model will be more than enough for most people.
Is the 400 km range you give, a highway range at 110 km/hr or is it a mixed driving range - and is it 100% to 0% state of charge? And of course, with or without a/c, dry road, 20°C. When people talk about long distance driving I think of freeway / motorway driving. In Europe this means between 110 and, mostly, 130 km/hr. Additionally if you're going to hedge against an out of service charging station you must leave around 50 km as a minimum charge buffer as chargers are about 50 to 60 km apart on motorways. I'm sure you can see the problem. If the 400 km range is an absolute max at 110 km/hr with a/c off and 20°C etc., then this quickly becomes around 300 km in real world long trip conditions.
These are some great points. And I guess, people will drive according to how they are able to. If I had a long trip and I need to make it the full way with no charging, then I would go a bit slower. The difference between 100kph and 130kph roughly is about 30% more consumption, which isn't helping you if you are tight on range in the first place. So Generally when I talk about range, I'm talking about ideal conditions, but still realistic. Driving at 100-110kph, with the A/C running on a warm day. That sort of day. I know this changes so much depending on what climate you live in for example. So it's great that you point this out and get a few people thinking that read this. Thanks for the comment :)
I own one and been following the Seal community in Thailand for since its release for around a month. Based on my experience and many others reviews from the community on facebook, the AWD version,100% to 10%, can go as far as 450-500 km easily under 100 km/hr. 350-380 for those who always goes over 130+hm/hr. and somewhere around 400-430 km for 100-120 km/hr. This can be even better with the Premium RAW version.
@@TheChargeShow The difference between 130 & 110 is over 50% more consumption. Wind resistance is the square of speed (130x130 / 100x100) = 69% more, some of the consumption goes to the rolling resistance of tyres etc so it not quite directly proportional to speed but close. In my Model 3 at 110km/h on a flat freeway good conditions I will sit around the 125-130Wh/km mark - at 130km/h this goes to 190-195Wh/km
What about the BEEP ALERTs...can they become annoying? (Speed limit for instance) cannot you block the sound Alerts to silence them forever ? Maybe in future updates? ...or to select Rumble alerts instead of sound alerts would be fine. The thing is that every time you turns the car on, you are forced to disable the Sound Beep Alers again and again, which can result very annoying... I am worried about this aspect really
Problem. The AC in the seal is bad, I think they installed a too small btu AC unit in Thailand we need it, too hot here on the seal you can't adjust the fan outlets manually it's impossible to get the AC to blow on the driver. The vents need moving and re designing and more btu power.
I am a model 3 standard range owner in SA. Good to see you have chosen us over Melbourne. I love visiting my mates in Vic but I think we have better beaches, better wine and getting around here is so much easier. Drove to Melbourne and back last week and the Tesla ate it up with a couple of stops at fast chargers in Keith, Horsham & Ballarat. The Seal intrigues me with price and features the Tesla does not have but I saw a review from Germany today that touched on the stupid music the car needs to play for pedestrians when slow moving. I’m hoping they don’t do that for Aussie delivered cars? Do you know if I can test drive one in Adelaide yet? I suspect not at the moment? Thanks for the video.
Isn't it amazing that we want everything AND don't want to pay for it ! Why compare it to other cars at all ? And - Would you pay an extra amount to have the underside painted ?
Hey, yes, it is facilitated through the 'NVIDIA DRIVE' Hyperion computing architecture which BYD has incorporated in its new energy vehicles :) So, yes, it can park itself.
@@TheChargeShow interesting. Ive been scouring the internet for evidence of this feature and cannot find it anywhere. Ive been leaning toward Ioniq 6 for this reason. However if the Seal can indeed park itself i'll have to rethink.
I'm guessing so. A bonnet on the outside may have anywhere in the region of 300-500g of clear coat on it. So if they can take off 200g. That saves weight and money. All these 200g add up to a fair bit when they do it in various places. Thin plastic clips, thinner plastic on the headlights, thinner plastic on the door handles, thinner covers on the mirrors etc etc.
The servicing costs for the BYD Seal are structured in a way that servicing is required every 12 months or every 20,000 km, whichever comes first. The costs for the first eight services are priced at $189, $370, $189, $447, $189, $370, $189, and $447 respectively :)
@@TheChargeShow thanks for the cost. I'm new to car buying experience but to me that pricing seems fair.. Is it cheaper with Tesla? It'll be my first time owning a byd, my first time buying a brand new car (seal), and first time driving an EV.😬😅 haha so I'm pretty new to all of it.
@@jakgats1411 Tesla has no scheduled services - the car constantly runs diagnostics and prompts you to schedule an appointment if it thinks you need one - there are many Tesla owners who have done nothing but changed cabin filters in their first 2 or 3 years of ownership.
Hey mate, thank you for your videos. Do you know if the Seal comes with a built-in dash cam recorder like the Atto 3? I thought this was going to be a standard feature across the BYD range, but I believe the Dolphin doesn't come with one. To me, it's an important feature, so it would be a point to Tesla if the Seal doesn't have the feature included.
Hi Tim, thanks for the comment and I apologise for taking so long to get back to you. Yes, it does come with In built Dashcam. :) I believe it also has one on the rear too but I'm sure someone will correct me if there isn't one at the back.
@@timshaw6592 @TheChargeShow That's interesting. I went to the BYD in Alexandria and the salesperson specifically told me that the BYD Seal and the Dolphin do not come with built in dash cams. I can see how mixed information gets out there is even the salespeople don't know the answers.
@@timshaw6592 It's all very confusing. It would be great if the website actually articulated all the things which the car comes with. The spec sheet has no mention of a dash cam being present.
If BYD doesnt expand as a brand the dealerships will shrink to just the CBD's....then imagine if its not convenient for you to get it serviced if they're 1hour away from you....which then voids your warranty
In Thailand BYD has now 100 dealer sales and service locations. The plan is to have 200 locations countrywide by end of next year. They are popping up everywhere Tesla showroom and service locations,,,, ONE! I have a model 3 dual motor and the Seal S 3. 8 looks to better value and service support. The Tesla supercharger network is primarily at high end shopping malls at the moment and largely centered around Bangkok. The real downside is the Tesla supercharger cost per kwh is 30-50% HIGHER than the numerous competitive charge NETWORKS which are located at the popular petrol stations. (all EVs use the same CCS plug.) BYD is growing leaps and bounds and smart as they have 4 models launched with 3 more coming so they will have numerous choices at all price points. I like my model 3 Tesla but,,,, will I be tempted to jump ship? That's a solid Maybe. 😊
They changed the centre console from the piano black to a plain dark grey plastic looks really cheap, and the no clear coat under the bonnet also cheap I wonder what other corners they have cut, reminds me of a Holden Commodore or that type of vehicle I wonder is that who will be buying it?
If BYD want to make a mark in UK and Europe, they need to offer a proper warranty on the battery. Brands here offer a 100,000 minimum some more. They also need to offer good finance. A lot of people like PCP deals. No use if a BYD devalues 60 to 70% in three years! As this would make them too expensive per month.
Interesting that warranties have a maximum distance in the UK. Most in Australia are 5-7 years unlimited KM (with some brands offering shorter warranty if using for Uber etc)
I'm one of many people around the world that acknowledges just how shocking it was when in the past few years, Victoria made their own people apply to leave the country, apply to re-enter, welcomed them into the country with machine guns and the military, arrived unannounced at tower-blocks with the military to tell people that they are now locked in their homes for two weeks under guard. Stopped people driving 5k's from home, and I can't count how many people in the past few months have commented about Dictator Dan and pointing out the fact that it was one of the most locked down places on earth. The situation at the time was fairly new to all countries around the world, and they handled it with much more integrity, and didn't have a register with over 100k people listed as trying to return home. My recent trip saw lots of people clearly still terrified of it, when largely the world has moved on. This was a breach of many human rights, and in this video I simply mentioned how lovely Australia is in Victoria, but I won't move their because of this. This, and the simple fact that the politicians have shafted the young generation, so now people at 30-40 years old simple can't buy anything other than a unit for $300k. It's one of the most corrupt and shafted placed that I know in the Western world, and sadly, it is not as progressive as I first thought just several years ago. If you find peace with some of this, then it is one of the nicest places to live in Australia for someone like me. Shining a light on corruption and shifty behaviour is something that we should regard as imponderably important. So whilst I hope you may have found the video somewhat interesting, and clearly interesting enough to watch the first 12 minutes to get to the part where I mention about Australia, I also do hope you aren't upset with the comments made. The people in Victoria are incredibly lovely, and very friendly, hence why I vacation their sometimes. Best wishes and thanks for commenting and thanks even more for watching the video.
I just don't understand why people are so quick to trust these chinese brands when they have almost all universally had absolutely horrible reliability, after sales support and customer service.

I urge everyone in Australia NOT to buy a Byd Seal as I want my seal delivered ASAP
Hahahaha :)
Got my order out last week but I have been told 4-6 weeks to wait
Yeah that's true, I've heard people say this before. A lift back is more practical I think.
that is what the seal L is. in china it is called song L. just released this week.
@@qilu2004 There will be a Seal U which is bigger than the Song L.
Do you think the BYD seal is a good car for rideshare?
It would be fantastic :) I would always recommend going for simple paint colours though. Such as black rather than pearly Blue or white.
Is that a bluetti in the background there sir? enjoying it?
Hi there, no. I have had a Bluetti, but I prefer this one that yiou see here which is an Allpowers R600. Fantastic. Well made. Reliable. Used it for many hours now. :)
Any thoughts on the quality of the fake leather seats in the base model? Are they bad vinyl or decent quality?
Hi David, definitely good quality. They feel like a premium seat material which is nice.
Which would you prefer for same amount of $ Mg4 or BYD Dolphin?
BYD Dolphin. I prefer the smaller car, and I prefer the BYD brand. :)
When is the Seal available in the Uk?
I don't know but I hope they will take it there soon. It's fantastic. I'll get in touch with them and ask them.
Thank you my friend!🎉
I bought 1 today in Ireland@@Smiler7
Looks like BYD jacked the price due to the EU's anti-dumping investigation, it's far cheaper in Australia
Didn't spray clear coat? Well, there are only two options: 1) They used direct gloss (2k clear and paint in one) or 2) They sprayed a matte clear coat.
I used to paint cars for a dealership. They haven't used either of these.
@@TheChargeShow They could have activated the base, but base by itself can be rubbed-off. A good test is a rag with acetone.
We also have a new Atto 3 (2 weeks old) and the wife loves it. I quite like it as well! Although it does have that SUV driving feels to it - as expected, I guess.
Do you feel the byd performance model's extra features make it worthwhile over the premium model?
How do i buy one in the US
What about the BEEP ALERTs...can they become annoying? (Speed limit for instance) cannot you block the sound Alerts to silence them forever ? Maybe in future updates? ...or to select Rumble alerts instead of sound alerts would be fine.
The thing is that every time you turns the car on, you are forced to disable the Sound Beep Alers again and again, which can result very annoying... I am worried about this aspect really
Problem. The AC in the seal is bad, I think they installed a too small btu AC unit in Thailand we need it, too hot here on the seal you can't adjust the fan outlets manually it's impossible to get the AC to blow on the driver. The vents need moving and re designing and more btu power.
huh?? where'd you find schematics for it?? (as someone also with a background in electronics, this is very rare)
Seal looks good 👍
If only the byd seal adas system is like tesla autopilot
Can you please explain what you were saying about the warranty? I’m a bit confused what you mean.
The warranty is unnecessarily complicated:
Battery: 8y/160k and l
Isn't it amazing that we want everything AND don't want to pay for it ! Why compare it to other cars at all ? And - Would you pay an extra amount to have the underside painted ?
Good content Ben, would you know if the BYD Seal has autonomous self parking feature ?
Hey, yes, it is facilitated through the 'NVIDIA DRIVE' Hyperion computing architecture which BYD has incorporated in its new energy vehicles :) So, yes, it can park itself.
@@TheChargeShow interesting. Ive been scouring the internet for evidence of this feature and cannot find it anywhere. Ive been leaning toward Ioniq 6 for this reason. However if the Seal can indeed park itself i'll have to rethink.
FYI, my BMW 330e & Merc C300 under bonnet also came without clear coat. Is this a standard for car manufactory these days?
I'm guessing so. A bonnet on the outside may have anywhere in the region of 300-500g of clear coat on it. So if they can take off 200g. That saves weight and money. All these 200g add up to a fair bit when they do it in various places. Thin plastic clips, thinner plastic on the headlights, thinner plastic on the door handles, thinner covers on the mirrors etc etc.
What a steal at 50k. here in Singapore its 255K. yikes.
LOL a Toyota Corolla can cost nearly 200k.
Where do you find the servicing costs?
BYD say the top to specs have genuine leather in Australia is that not true?
Yes the base model seat look and feel exactly like the premium model which is suppose to be leather …. mmm
Great video! Thank you!
@@TheChargeShow oh that’s excellent. Do you happen to know whether the Dolphin does as well? There’s mixed info out there.
@@timshaw6592 @TheChargeShow That's interesting. I went to the BYD in Alexandria and the salesperson specifically told me that the BYD Seal and the Dolphin do not come with built in dash cams. I can see how mixed information gets out there is even the salespeople don't know the answers.
@@achang101 I think what makes it even harder is that there may be built-in dash cams in some markets/regions and not others.
@@timshaw6592 It's all very confusing. It would be great if the website actually articulated all the things which the car comes with. The spec sheet has no mention of a dash cam being present.
Not available here in the USA but judging by videos and reviewers, the interior and overall build quality is leaps and bounds better than Tesla.
And the government will make sure that you'll never see it or they tariff it to the point it wouldn't be affordable. Fair trade by Murican standards.
They changed the centre console from the piano black to a plain dark grey plastic looks really cheap, and the no clear coat under the bonnet also cheap I wonder what other corners they have cut, reminds me of a Holden Commodore or that type of vehicle I wonder is that who will be buying it?
can you review volvo ex30 ! thanks !
I will indeed. As soon as I get the opportunity. Which won't be long :)
Victoria isn't that bad to live. The dictator is gone, we'll get better.
I guess it depends on where you live. Here in the Northern Europe Seal has 8 years or 200k warranty on battery.
@pulssii Great news for Northern Europe. Sadly BYD has different warranties in each and every country
They'll never see it in America.
Rear wheel drive one engine byd seal doesn't last for more than 450 kilometers, but in china they advertise battery makes 700 kilometers, totally lie
Wow, this video descended quickly. Start talking about a car, end talking about how shit parts of Australia are. 👏🏼👏🏼
Chinese car is more expensive than European car 😂 I heard it is cheaper in SE Asia than in the UK
I just don't understand why people are so quick to trust these chinese brands when they have almost all universally had absolutely horrible reliability, after sales support and customer service.
They said the same about the Japanese in the 70s and the Koreans in the 2000s…
