Why do blueberries want mulch up to the stem?

Hello Jerry 👋 With all plants, including blueberries you can mulch up to the stems/ trunk- but it should be thinly applied at the trunk (about 1/2 to 1/4 inch) then build up to 2-3 inch think in the root zone. However, if there’s a freeze and/ or snow, many growers will mulch several inches or feet up the tree to protect the plant for the short-term only from freeze & wind damage. I hope this helps!?
