- EDIT 2: A number of users have also informed me that the signed TWRP image does not seem to work properly and is causing boot logo loops when flashed on a bone-stock Epic (c.f. Nichole Bair). An apparent workaround would be to flash the signed Epic Academy Edition backup I made as featured on this video:

ADDENDUM: Due to privacy concerns regarding SuperSU, it is more advisable to use alternative root managers such as Koush's Superuser and/or phh's fork. To flash Clockworkmod's Superuser, just substitute the Google Apps zip with this: download.clockw...
I have tried phh's fork but so far it cannot be installed yet. Koush's original app is outdated, I know, but that's the only one I could find that's worth the crap unless someone takes the effort of porting later Android versions to this tablet. :/
Well since you guys and gals asked for this and all, and I've noticed that a number of parents have been wondering how can they install Google services on their children's Epics, which, suffice it to say, isn't as simple as sideloading an APK and calling it a day.

If you're stuck at the LeapFrog logo (i.e. the one before the animated boot splash), try flashing the Academy Edition stock ROM then flash TWRP. Make sure to have a ROM_0 backup of your device at hand first, though. Kindly let me know if you need some further aid on this. ;)

I am having the same issue. It was when I transferred the open_gapps zip file. Followed it exactly like in the video. Now it is in the same loop and will not let me do anything. Will not even let me connect to the pc now for me to remove the file.

To everyone trying to do this:
It’s a pain, but still possible. MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL THE DRIVERS AND DO IT RIGHT, I uninstalled the device by accident and had to painstakingly dig out an old laptop to use.
SP flash tool: Disconnect the epic from the PC, Turn the epic COMPLETELY off, hold the volume up button, and plug it back in while in download mode on SP. If you didn’t install drivers, it won’t work. Good luck!
Just had some issues with TWRP and started bootlooping - fixed by unscrewing the back cover, removing the battery connector and placing it back. Just reflashing the academy edition ROM and I’ll try a diff version of TWRP.

I don't think this works for the newer Leappad Academy, Mine is EPIC4 which is running Android 10.

Help! I got stuck in a boot cycle, and following the tutorial you linked to in Edit 2 did nothing, the flash tool just gives me this error message:
ERROR: S_BROM_DOWNLOAD_DA_FAIL (0x7D4)
[H/W] Fail to download DA to baseband chip's internal SRAM!
[HINT]:
1. There's an cable communication problem between FlashTool and BootROM.
2. Target might be shutdown unexpectedly or target lost power supply.
[ACTION]
1. Try again.
2. Proceed H/W checking in download cable and target side com port.
3. Monitor if power-drop occured in target side.
How can I fix this, I really hope my epic isn't bricked :/
If you get that issue, X out of it immediately and press the Download button again. Do it quickly tho.

Oh! figured it out! It saved weird the first time... not sure why but it had extra words after .img
Tried to add TWRP to Leappad Academy model EPICv3, BoardID C, Android version 4.4.2. Now it cannot boot past the LeapPad logo. I can get it to boot once if I use the flash tool. Is there a way to remove the TWRP to go back to stock? How do I flash the Roy Boxter stock ROM?
I was able to get it to work after several attempts on the above hardware. I used the scatterfile from the Roy Boxer ROM and was able to flash the TWRP. I'm not sure what resolved the boot loop, but I at one point I was able to get to the original recovery screen to clear cache. The next time trying to download TWRP the device booted into the TWRP page

Hi, I have successfully flashed the TWRP (3.0.2-0-KOT49H.user.1.1.95.20171215.140555), everything works fine but cannot enter in TWRP menu by pressing power and volume up button simultaneously. It takes me to System recovery menu with 5 options 1. Reboot system now 2. Apply update from ADB and other 3 options. I think you got the picture. How do I enter the TWRP option/menu?

i need help right now, i tried the smart phone flash tool, and it kept giving me errors, then i kept trying til it crashed, after that i unplugged my leapfrog epic and it wont turn on, ive tried everything and its not working.
Take off the back cover, unplug the battery terminal from your epic, wait a few seconds and plug it again.
Im stuck at the sp flash tool. Plugged in my leapfrog and booted to root, but when pressing download, it wont do anything...
The unit should be turned off prior to using SP Flash Tool. Also, make sure to perform a ROM_0 backup first before flashing.

what do i do with the drivers how do i install them?
Under normal circumstances they should install on their own once you plug the tablet in while it's turned off.
does anyone know a fix for the google play store crashing every time you open it because i have it installed and rooted through gapps zip using TWRP but when i open the play store it opens and then closes, even when i install the app store from apkmirror any fixes or suggestions

Sadly no. That one doesn't run on Android.
The academy edition won’t even allow the Amazon AppStore anymore. All I really want to add to this tablet is roblox and RUclips. Everything else it comes with is fine. Would this root allow me to sideload those apps? 😅

Did you perform a ROM_0 backup first? Also, try flashing TWRP again. That may get the tablet to boot as I've had others with similar issues.

Excuse me, but now I need some help haha. I’m having issues with TWRP. I installed the ROM from the video you linked in the description, but it still bootloops. I checked the version and it is the 2017 release.
My TWRP version is 3.0.2-0-narnia
Update: got it to load into TWRP, by just trying again with another download. Not sure if this means it will work, since it usually boots once and then bootloops, will update

does this work on the latest versions of the leap pad academy? I got one for my kid but i wasnt aware of the cost of these subscriptions. I have tried all the steps in this video but the SP tool never seems to connect to the device. Ive also tried downloading the drivers and that has not seemed to help.
What version of Windows do you have? And can you contact me on Discord?
Also, you must be having the second-gen LeapPad Academy with the Rockchip SOC. Those can be identified with the clock on the upper-left side of the display and the G2R-6022 FCC ID on the back of the device. I haven't managed to crack this thing up yet as VTech locked this thing down even further (and removed crucial features such as Bluetooth for some reason).

Well it's not entirely my fault as there is some risk to installing these things. Try flashing the full Academy Edition ROM first then install TWRP. That worked on mine and another parent's Epic.
