This is an update on my DIY 300 gallon saltwater lagoon (pond). It's been running for about four months. Everything is doing perfect. I have added 100+ lbs of live rock which is a total of around 300 lbs. I plan on adding 100 lbs more in the near future. This is by far the easiest setup I have EVER had. I do a 90 gallon water change once a month and that is it.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
any updates on how the lagoon is going and build details would be great am looking to do simlar at moment
This is so smart actually and looks way cheaper than keeping a big giant tank
Fr that’s why I’m getting one of these tmr
Damn man, we need some narration, or at least some text.
Build concept and details: tubs and 2000 gal.
Filtration choices and details.
Livestock selection.
Your background and fish room concept.
Keep going, but clue us in.
Thanks. I can give you details if you like. Just give me your email address. Filtration is very simple by the way. I am actually doing some modifications to this particular tank. I will upload a video when it's complete. The main components to the filtration is a LARGE skimmer, water volume and LOTS of live rock. I use rox carbon occasionally.
omg this is so beautiful!!! I have one for axolotls, but the sand really makes these tanks pop! i should look into a sand bottom for the future
Well then I’m impressed
Need an update video!!!!:(
Hey, love the pond... Just curious do you have any problems with the fish jumping out?
Tanks look great! Love the angels!
I know this video is aged but doing the same setup right now. Can I ask you some questions?
Im planning to do something like this but with cannister filters
Where can I get one of these tubs an for how much
What an awesome idea...just needs a viewing window
Miss Saltwater tank Thank you. Yeah it would be nice but then again. Top down is really cool too.
Do u have a link for that bottom tub?
This is incredible, I don't understand how you don't have more views and subscribers. Will definitely be building my own. Very well done! Love the shallow reef too.
Thanks! If you have questions, just hollar. Good luck with you build! I am planning on doing a video of my shallow reef tank as well. As for a trigger, I have lots of hermits and lobsters in this tank. A trigger would be no good in there even though I like triggers.
Live rock filtration
How did u do thw scimmer
What tank ya using
A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!!!!!!!
Ok thanks, I will. Yeah I suggested the blue throat because they're reef safe-ish. Mr. Saltwater tank (youtube) has one in is 375 reef tank. Probably not worth the risk though.
hey man this thing is AMAZING!!! Very Impressed, Wish more people did the 300 gallon rubbermaid, very effective and cost efficient.
I appreciate it. Yeah it was a fun project. I really enjoy it. Share it. Thanks
Tanner Smith Hey, quick question, did you have any problems with humidity? Im thinking of doing one in my living room? Any ideas?
No humidity issues whatsoever.
Update please
Are you running a dehumidifier? Do you
Cover these while you’re away? Just curious about humidity
Hi that is very nice. How many gallons is your sump.
Your channel would be amazing if you spoke during the videos explaining things and interacting with the views
Hi Tanner!
Looks awesome! I am going to replicate this exact thing. I found you on reefcentral.com but have a couple of questions.
1. How many gallons is your skimmer rated for?
2. How big is the stock tank that has the skimmer?
3. Do you have any safeguards to keep the skimmer tank from leaking into the main display tank? Or do you just have the bulk head super high up?
I hope we see a new video soon! I love the look of this and its super economical compared to other tanks.
Marcos
AMAZING!
Pretty interesting idea using a large tub. But hey it looks awesome!
How do you keep up with evaporation? Also, what pumps are you using?
how expensive is your maintenance each month? I am thinking of doing something like this?
How is this doing now? I haven't seen an update in quite a while on RC. Looks awesome!!!!
I'm looking at doing something similar. how did yiu set your sump up?
thats awesome. but i would have made a cutout and put clear acrylic in the side just to get a regular tank veiw. or even like make a new wall and have it on other side of the wall, where you can only see the acrylic, so people cant tell it isnt a regular fish tank. im gonna do that one day.
very nice pond, how much this pond? only pond?
Hi, great job with the tank. Question - Do u have details on where to buy that tank? Thx
i would love to have something like this one day:)
Do you know where i can see a tub in person in the charlotte n.c area?
Beautiful! What filtration are you running.
That's lit! You set up a Berlin system for it?
is there not loads of evaporation from this?
This is so cool. If I had some room I would definitely build one of these looks cool from above.
Mine would be indoor as well
Badass setup! How did you plumb this? I would like to do something like this in the near future.
Love the pond! Inspirational
Wow man this looks Beautiful !!!!! My buddy is going to do a set up like this after I showed him your video.
Thanks man! If he has any questions, feel free to ask. Best cost effective tank I have made thus far.
Hello. Is this still running? I am interested in the same tub,but im getting mixed reviews with some saying it cracks over only two years. How did yours hold up?
I have had it running for five years with no problems at all
WHT sand did you use
Very nice you should do a up date video for 2015 on the 300 gallon stock tank
I will do one soon. Stay tuned.
I must told you, your Achilles tang is great! How old is it? I think it is as long as the ciliaris!
about 4 years old
thats wicked
What size bulkhead did you use on the 50 gallon tank ?
1-1/4" bulkhead
Very nice I'll get a vid of my setup nice to c a tank like this
Post a link here when you do. I wanna see it!
Very cool
What kind of liverock do you have there?
All kinds. Mostly pukani. roughly 400 lbs of it
Or buy?
This setup looks great.
Thank you. Its my favorite tank.
were those blue spiny lobster in the sump?
texas fishing finatic correct
Nice
im just curious if this is still up and running
bj rippeto yes and no. Tank is running but without sand and only has a queen Angelfish pair and a pair of epaulette sharks
Did you dump all those fish at once? How you keep them from fighting each other?
No, they have coexisted together for about 3 years. Some of the fish are 6 years old. They have a pecking order starting with the emperor angel but they do great together. They are rewarding to keep.
Tanner Smith What I meant is the initial time of putting those fish in were one at time or 6 at a time. Because I use to have a 150 gallon where I bought 6 baby angel and drop them in all at once to keep them from fighting each other.
Vinnie Wong Good question. The angels were put in at different times. You see, I buy all my fish at an early juvenile stage. I like to watch them grow up. Large angels typically don't harass juveniles too bad. As the juveniles grow, a pecking order is established and I never see my fish fighting. They all coexist well together. It's the best way to introduce new fish is to introduce them at a juvenile stage.
Thats really cool and yet so simple. What is that container exactly?
300g Rubbermaid tub
+Tanner Smith Its pretty sweet. Might try something similar with freshwater goldies. not quite ready to tackle saltwater yet
This is awesome, I hope you still have it :)
+Robert Rainey (Bearclawws) yes sir. I need to make an update video.
+Tanner Smith I want do something like this where did you get your filtration system
no filters ..just a skimmer. ..and a sump..
correct. now I am using two skimmers instead of one
+Tanner Smith
I really enjoyed watching this set up. ..I love your set up simple nice and easy..I subscribe to your channel. ..would like to see an update soon....thanks keep up the good work..
Hey Tanner what did you do for the bulkhead that comes in those rubbermaid tubs? Did you replace it with a better one? My two new ones are leaking no matter what I do. Did you have this issue? I want to do a lagoon just like this!
Great question. Yes, my bulkhead leaked as well.
What I did... I used Teflon tape on the bulkhead and I used silicone to seal both the inside and outside parts of the bulkhead using aquarium silicone.
It did the trick and I have not had a leak yet in over two years of use.
Oh so you kept the one that came in it. Just did it yourself.
Steve Mac correct
How can you tell where is your water evaporation is at? The bottom tank or top?
The big tank. It's acts like a sump.
do you have any problems with the fish jumping out?Tanner Smith
Jroc Smith Yes and No. I have had two fish jump out, one died the other I luckily found on the floor. It survived and is doing well.
its outside right ? why use LEDs ?
No. It's located in my basement (fish room). LEDs are energy efficient and relatively inexpensive for this setup
nice I really love that idea amazing job!
I love the thought and design so I am going to do the exact same thing!! I was wondering if you could elborate on the plumbing? Do you just have a return pump on the 300 gal and then a hole in the sump to return the water?
Yep. I just use a 1200gph circulating pump to pump water to the 55 gallon tub and it just falls right back into the 300 gallon.
Is that how you maintain the water level in the 300 gallon as well? In other words since the display doesn't have a drain, how do you maintain the water level?
newreefer92 I maintain the water level simply by eyeing it. I also check with my refractometer. I have a level mark on the tank itself which tells me where I need it filled in order to maintain a SG of 1.025
Ok cool yeah I was just inquiring about how you keep the 300 gallon from overflowing, not so much your salinity. Never the less I appreciate your response, I successfully copied you lol. Apologize for the dumb question, cool you posted it on RC as well
.
Wow!!!!! Very nice man!!!
FloodXL thanks. Please sub for more videos to come.
Tanner Smith hell yeah! I want to see this huge pond you have in the works.
Yes we need an updated video. Is this still running?
