LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Londynn Jones knocked down a career-best six three pointers as No. 4 UCLA Women's Basketball routed future Big Ten Conference foe Purdue Monday night, 92-49. The Bruins begin the season 1-0, claiming victory inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
Sophomore Lauren Betts recorded a career-high 20 points (9-11 FG) and seven rebounds in her Bruin debut; the center also swatted two shots. Jones shot a scorching 6-for-11 from distance in the 43-point win. All five starters were in double figures in the season opener (Rice - 10, Osborne - 11, Dugalic - 13, Betts - 20, Jones - 20). The Bruins had five players in double-digit scoring twice last season.
Sophomore Kiki Rice recorded UCLA's first double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and throwing 10 assists in the victory. The starting point guard had four boards and three steals on Monday.
Graduate student Charisma Osborne added seven assists of her own in the win; Osborne was scoreless during the first half but shot 3-of-6 to cash in from distance.
The Bruins started things off hot, shooting 10-of-13 in the first quarter. Betts made her presence known early, scoring the first basket of her career in the first 15 seconds of the game. On the other end, Betts recorded her first block in a Bruin uniform one minute later. Senior Izzy Anstey came in and threw two assists out of the post - first, she dimed Rice for a triple, then hit a cutting Gabriela Jaquez in the lane. Angela Dugalic came back in and made an immediate impact - she knocked down a three three, then fed Betts down low before hitting an open mid-range jumper at the elbow. The Bruins finished it off with some flash; Rice threw an inbounds pass off an unaware Purdue defender to get an open look under the basket.
UCLA led by 16 at the end of the first.

Jones led the way for UCLA in the second, scoring eight of the team's 18 points in the quarter. Dugalic added six points on 2-of-3 shooting. Betts came up big late, grabbing an offensive board with time expiring and putting it back as the buzzer sounded.

Osborne started to work in the third quarter, scoring two threes on two attempts. The graduate student collected four of her total assists in the period; Osborne lobbed a pass into the paint for Betts, who scored the basket through a foul. The center knocked down her free throw to convert the three-point play. Freshman Amanda Muse recorded her first bucket with UCLA off a dish from graduate student Camryn Brown.
UCLA held a controlling lead, 65-39, through three.
The Bruins outscored Purdue 27-10 in the final frame; seven UCLA student-athletes got on the board in the period. Rice played all 10 minutes in the fourth quarter as UCLA sealed the victory.

Purdue is just too slow. UCLA has speed and size. Need quickness to compete against the top teams.

Betts should have gone to Iowa. Iowa lost their big . With betts a national championship would have been in the cards

Iowa is TOTALLY overrated...they got Clark and the rest are fair to midland..only 2 players over 6 2", which won't cut it when they play the top teams; last year's freak win over South Carolina that built Iowa's current reputation won't repeat this year - too many better teams have been irritated by all the nonstop media over hype..the Big 10 is weak compared to the other Power 5 conferences, so Iowa will do well...they only play 1 ranked team in non-conference play, so they got a far better chance to keep their record unblemished - all the other top schools play super-challenging non-conference schedules against multiple top ranked teams...Iowa's easy schedule should get them a top seeding in the NCAA, but it won't help them win; don't even expect them to return to the Final Four this time. If Betts was at Iowa, they still wouldn't go as far as they did last year - Betts is tall, but she's mediocre compared to the other top Bigs.
