  • UNCASVILLE, Conn. - No. 2/2 UCLA Women's Basketball handled No. 20/20 Florida State, defeating the Seminoles 95-78 in the first game of the Invesco QQQ Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Showcase Sunday.
Sophomore Lauren Betts was named Player of the Game by the Basketball Hall of Fame inside Mohegan Sun Arena, recording an impressive 22 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks in 29 minutes on the floor. The center snatched eight offensive boards en route to a new career-high rebounding total.
Five Bruins reached double-digit scoring figures: Betts (22), Angela Dugalić (16), Charisma Osborne (16), Londynn Jones (14), Kiki Rice (13). Jones shot 4-for-9 from distance and scored almost half of UCLA's three-pointers (9-for-27 3FG).

The Bruins won the battle inside the arc, outpacing the Seminoles 52-30 in points scored in the paint.
UCLA came out of the gates ready for the top-20 matchup. The Bruins went on a 6-0 run to start thanks to Betts and Osborne going to work in the paint. Betts cashed in a mid-range jumper before snatching a block away from a Seminole. The block by the Bruin center led to a spin and score by Kiki Rice. UCLA led 13-2 at the media timeout.
Up as much as 17 before back-to-back Florida State trips to the free-throw line, the Bruins controlled the first quarter. UCLA outshot the Seminoles in the period, scoring 12 of their 18 attempts to FSU's four made baskets on the same amount of shots. Florida State cut it to nine to end the first period, and the UCLA led 26-17 at the break.
The Seminoles came out firing in the second, scoring three of their first five attempts to cause a UCLA timeout. The Bruins and Seminoles traded buckets, with Betts and Dugalić working the two-man game to get a three for UCLA.
The Bruins strung together a pair of threes by Osborne and Jones to get the lead back into double digits. UCLA held a 14-point advantage at half.
It was back and forth to start the third quarter. The Seminoles completed an and-one play, and Rice answered with a three-point and-one play of her own. Florida State attacked the paint, scoring four-consecutive baskets inside to cut UCLA's lead to eight. Coach Cori Close called a timeout with 5:17 on the clock. Bruins battled back and ripped off a 10-0 run, ignited by a Dugali three-pointer. Osborne scored the last five points of that run. The Bruins limited Florida State to a three-pointer and three free throws to close the quarter; UCLA led 76-61 going into the final frame.
UCLA stayed steady in the fourth and prevented significant offensive momentum from the opposition. Betts and Rice got to the paint early and helped the Bruins go on a 6-0 run. Camryn Brown, Dugali and Jones contributed to a 7-0 run later in the quarter, and six UCLA players on the board in the period. The Bruins held onto their 17-point lead to earn the victory Sunday.

Apparently, the referees in this game could not count to 3. Betts and her friend spend hours in the paint but never get called. Should be an interesting match-up between UCRA and USC for the title. Everyone else can go home now. Let the two monsters fight it out.
