    Rest in Peace, Roy. You were a tremendous competitor. As a Cardinals fan, I couldn't imagine somebody I wanted to face less in this game. You will be forever missed.

    No doubt the 2011 season was a dream come true for any Cardinals fan. Obviously Game 6 of the World Series gets most of the attention these days, but this was my favorite Cardinals game and moments up to that point...
    What an incredible game. One team a dynasty with a world of expectations on its shoulders, the other 10 games out with only a month to play and got in on the last day. Ended up being a one run ballgame, that being the ONLY RUN scored all game. So incredibly tense. Skip Schumaker of all people scoring the only RBI. Yadi throwing out Utley trying to steal. Two hits by Ibanez and Utley that missed tying the game by a few feet. Epic pitchers duel between two of the grittiest workhorses in all of baseball who both lived up to their billing (and happen to be good friends). Even as a big Cardinals fan myself, that moment in the 8th inning with Halladay having already thrown 117 pitches, bases loaded, only one out, on the ropes, and the guy just buckles down and makes phenomenal pitches to get two phenomenal hitters out. I was blown away; THIS is why he's the best pitcher in baseball, I get it now. Despite Halladay's incredible game, Carpenter was just an edge better to go the distance for a complete game shutout. All this with the immense weight of Game 5, do-or-die situation for these teams.
    Every second of this game was a white-knuckle, edge-of-your seat moment. No other sport can make you feel those kinds of emotions. This is baseball.
    RIP Doc

      Couldn't have said it better myself. I didn't get into baseball until 2010 and I can remember watching this game on the edge of my seat! I'm a diehard fan of the Yankees, but this is one of the greatest games I've ever watched. I am reading a book called "Doc" by Todd Zolecki and it's absolutely incredible. I just read about this game last night in the book, but I never forgot it. I recommend that book to any fan of baseball. RIP Doc.

    As a Cardinals fan, I remember watching this game and pacing around my living room with a whole different feeling than many of you Phillies fans. For us in St. Louis, this was incredibly special and lead to something even more so (I was actually at Games 2, 6, and 7 of the 2011 World Series). Even at the time, as a high school student, I had so much respect for Doc and Carp. Carpenter is still my favorite Cardinal and Halladay is one of my favorite non-Cardinals to ever play the game. This game was perhaps one of the best displays of pitching and true team-play that the game has ever seen - there may never be another like it.

    As a die hard Philly fan, this is the worst loss I've ever witnessed. We had such a memorable 102 win season, and the city was truly in love with this team. This loss ended our "dynasty" and we won't be back in October for a LONG time. The cruel irony is that we were ecstatic we beat the Braves on the last day of the season to set up a series with the Cardinals, only to lose and watch our team fall apart...

      Stevie Taylor I wonder what would have happened if the Phils laid down in Atlanta and knocked the Cardinals out of the playoffs. The Phillies may have then won the World Series or, at the very least, not gotten eliminated in the first round because during the regular season, the Phils struggled the worst against the Cardinals. Who really knows for sure though?

    • @skaftonmd8916

It's a shame he got no support, but Carpenter was masterful and it was his play more than the Phillies play that lead to the shutout.
      With that now in the past, I think the Phillies are on their way to a potential dynasty and the Cardinals are looking to win as well. If both our teams get back to the NLDS this year, it'll be a fun rematch! Best of luck to your Phillies and Go Cardinals!

Phillies were huge favorites in this series at the onset but the Cardinals pulled the upset en route to their epic World Series championship postseason run. R.I.P. Roy Halladay.... :-(

      cant be a pitching duel if a pitcher gave up a run in the first inning. a duel is 0-0 . Halliday showed his nerves for a second time in the series. Lee lost the series for the phillies in the second game given a 4-0 lead and blowing it. Why manuel pitched lame armed Oswalt in the 4th games is inexcusable. Ryan HowARD started gang busters in game 1 then faded like his 2nd half regular season numbers.

    I was sitting in a sports bar watching this game. Almost everybody in the bar was pulling for the Phillies. I will never forget something an old guy said when it was all over. All Atlanta had to do was win one game in that last season series, just one game. The Phillies beat the Braves and swept those last 3 games against Atlanta. This allowed the then hottest team in baseball the Cardinals into the postseason after they beat Atlanta in that one game. I know there are some baseball purists who will start yanking their hair out reading this. I still think had the Phillies gone easy on Atlanta and kept St Louis out of the postseason they would have won it all that year. You NEVER allow a hot team to advance if you are in a position to stop it.

    We'll never see a pitcher throw complete game 1-0 shutout again due to analytics. Unless they're throwing a no-hitter or perfect game. Damn shame.

    What is this "Phillies dynasty" so many people have mentioned in the comments... winning 1 world series does NOT make you a dynasty

    • @pomerlain8924
      @pomerlain8924 3 года назад

      If they had won the WS in 2011, giving them 2 WS in 4 years, it would have been a dynasty. Their window to win was from 2007-2011.

      No if they deserved it they would've won it, the cardinals were the better team when they needed to be that's why they won, it doesn't matter how many games you win the in the regular season, what matters is that you get to postseason, once your there all the numbers go out the window

      The only way for the “best team” to always win the World Series is to not have a World Series. Just give the team with the best record the Commissioner’s trophy at the end of the regular season. But who wants that?

    Too bad the Cardinals didn't have their "ace", I mean you have a Cy Young, World Series winning Chris Carpenter healthy, yet their "ace" Adam Wainwright was hurt. Oh, what, Chris Carpenter was their ace? He pitched a complete-game 3-hit shutout, beating Doc Halladay? Huh, I guess CHRIS CARPENTER IS THE ACE!!! Dumbasses are the ones who know nothing about baseball who said Wainwright was the ace over the experienced Carpenter!

    • @lorddevil9019

    The more talented team didn't win...pathetic. Just pathetic. We should have had Halladay pitch on short rest in game 4 to put them away, and if we didn't do that have Lee pitch game 5 on full rest.

    Too bad the Cardinals would go on to lose the ALCS to the Giants the next year in 2012 after leading the Giants 3-1 and then they would lose the World Series this year to the Red Sox. TOO BAD

    • @scottedwards2962
      @scottedwards2962 10 лет назад

      Brienne Tarth Its too bad because I am a Giants fan and I have be reminded of the Cardinals history of being up 3-1 in a 7 game series and losing the series. Lets start with the 1968 World Series to the Tigers Cardinals were up 3-1 and lost the World Series. THe 1985 World Series the Cardinals were up 3-1 against the Kansas City Royals and lost in 7. then the 1996 the Cardinals in the NLCS were up 3-1 against the Atlanta Braves and they still lost the Series in 7 and now you would lose to my Giants in 7 games after being up 3-1. That is something as a Giants fan I wouldnt be able to stomach and IM JUST STATING THE FACTS THAT THE CARDINALS HAVE A HISTORY OF CHOKING WHEN UP 3-1

    • @scottedwards2962
      @scottedwards2962 10 лет назад

      Brienne Tarth PLUS MAKE THAT TWO TIMES IN THE WORLD SERIES THE RED SOX OWN THE CARDINALS AND THE LAST TWO TIMES THE GIANTS PLAYED THE CARDINALS IN THE NLCS THE GIANTS OWN THAT SHIT

      Scott Edwards NOW IF ANYONE IS SET IN BASEBALL I WOULD SAY THE YANKEES NOW THAT THEY GOT CARLOS BELTRAN AND JACOBY ELSBURY AND THE CARDINALS GOT RID OF DAVID FREESE THE 2011 WORLD SERIES MVP WHILE THE GIANTS RE-SIGNED HUNTER PENCE TIM LINCECUM, JAVIER LOPEZ AND ADDED TIM HUDSON. WATCH OUT NOW

      teaguejsify Nah I would say you are the dumbass because you cant accept the fact that the CARDINALS HAVE A HISTORY OF CHOKING IN A 7 GAME SERIES DATING BACK TO 1968. WHY DONT YOU READ UP ON YOUR HISTORY YOU DIPSHIT BEFORE YOU TALK
