- Wikipedia: Martinair Flight 495 was a McDonnell Douglas DC-10 operated by Dutch airline Martinair, that crash-landed in severe weather conditions at Faro Airport, Portugal, on 21 December 1992. The aircraft carried 13 crew members and 327 passengers, mainly holidaymakers from the Netherlands. 54 passengers and 2 crew members died and 106 of the other occupants were badly injured.
It's insane how quickly things can go from fine to "impact" during a landing. Scary stuff.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think anyone in the flight deck died in this accident. The first officer was flying until 2015.

Really rare that about 1/3 of people onboard died. Generally with these aviation disasters it’s almost all or nothing in terms of survival.
At least I would say a 45-30% survival rate for the impact, which exceeds the Vref.
Always a good idea to wait for a thunderstorm to move out of the area before attempting a takeoff or landing.
Often not possible *(to wait for a landing, that is), if fuel is running low
I wish they would have made a hard landing on the first try instead..
@@AvyScottandFlower your right but everybody knows flying at night or in a heavy strom or snowy air is dangerous because at night its dark pitch black and its hard to know where the horizon is Strom is dangerous it could shock the plane and make it loses its electricity such as lights or knots meter or alt meter and for snowy weather its difficult because of the windsher and the temperature it might be too cold for the plane so it freezes the fuel and then the engines go dead.

@@CriticReload it is about -56 ℃ at altitude so planes are used to the cold. It is icing that can be a problem lower down.

They died upon impact, most of them did not have seatbelts, this is why you should wear seatbelts at all time regardless, thats also for when you are in a vehicle, even in boats at times in rough sea you should wear seatbelts.
We flew to Holland from Canada on this very plane in 1984. I only know this because we took a picture before boarding and it shows the name of the plane "Antony Ruys."
Martinair was KLM for the middle class!-took it for years and then Icelandic..no issues lol..besides KLM was 1st class all the way

There’s no other way to word it expect someone cried in pain, either co pilot or pilot because black boxes hook up with their microphone on their headset. Including flight engineers at times. So it could of been a pilot, flight engineer, or co pilot.

My father flew one, and I was a mechanic on (TV103) beginning in 1971. Up until a few years ago it was still flying for FE or about 48 years. The US Air Force is still flying them as tankers. The mechanical fault crashes were early in it's life, later because of pilot error but no more "dangerous" than any other type.
The DC-10 has a horrible reputation
just because the media always painted on it because of the Turkish dc-10; while ironically the 747 it has more deadlier crash than the DC-10 does it. Because you know; Boeing's lobbysm...
The DC-10 was definitely a crasher in it's early years...they fixed all the problems, and created a beautiful airplane, but it's reputation was already done by that point.
The MD-11 is a gorgeous piece of mechanical engineering and a real pilot's airplane though, the last generation of the old style airplanes that had their own personality.
I wouldn't hesitate to take a ride on a Fed Ex DC-10 if they are still running them.
when i was a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's all the plane crashes seemed like they were always DC 10's or 727's
The tu-154 is similar to the 727 and the 154 was one of the most dangerous planes around

Yes, the F/O even flew until 2015. He always stayed a F/O. Never became captain. Don't know if that has anything to do with the crash....

This is actually often the case in slow speed crashes. That large jet (possibly a 777?) that crashed in San Francisco a few years ago just short of the runway hitting the sea wall, I think only 3 people died out of hundreds. And if I recall they weren't wearing the seatbelt properly and were tossed from the jet.
I was near Faro that day, at the time of that crash the storm was very bad, I stopped driving for a few minutes due to the dangerous conditions, they should never have attempted landing in it,within an hour or less the storm had passed through.
So good that we are getting an air crash investigation about this
Stabilized approach criteria was pretty well non-existent back then. It’s a miracle there weren’t more disasters

well its still flying as an cargo jet workhorse, specially by FedEx & TAB cargo. Some others became an flying hospital and others became firefighters.
@@axl1632 At least they found a new life. Near Cleveland Hopkins Airport, there's an ex-passenger DC-10 or MD-11 (can't tell) that was purchased by NASA. There's a really cool restaurant near by, and every time you go there, you can see it parked outside. The things are genuinely huge. Dwarfed practically everything else that was there.

Sorry to say, but this was truly the dumbest crash ever. They knew there was a thundershower over the airport, so they should have expected wind shears. They knew what had happened in Dallas and on top of that the tower had told them there was standing water on the runway and, to top it off, they had already done one approach where they had encountered 2 microbursts during this approach. And still they continued the approach instead of just going into a holding pattern to await the departure of the thunderstorm or simply going to their alternate.
And lastly the Dutch investigation board tried to cover the whole accident up so that Martinair would not be liable. Disgusting.

@@lebojay Tenerife was a very dumb one, but that one happened in fog conditions, before they started paying more attention to CRM and take off procedures (that was actually introduced because of what happened in Tenerife).
I agree with you completely that Tenerife should have never happened, and the subsequent attempt to cover it up was despicable, but I still rate Faro a bit higher on the dumb list.
In this case there was no fog, but there were known wind shear conditions and Dallas in 1985 had clearly demonstrated what can happen if you try to pull a stunt like this. Since they had already tried one approach they decided to do it again in the same conditions ? On top of that they did not compensate nor anticipate for the wind shear conditions, were low on speed basically the whole way, that is a recipe for disaster.
The only logic thing to do was to go around and either wait for the thunderstorm to pass or go to the alternate. And they still decided to press on.
But you are right, Tenerife was also extremely dumb, criminally dumb.

@@fatihguler7141 AF 447 was a lack of systems knowledge and lack of training on the side of one of the pilots which brought the plane down. Yes, that is stupid and dumb, but this guy had no clue what he was doing.
In case of Martinair the crew knew exactly what was going on (they actually mention it on the CVR), they knew what could happen and still they pressed on. And knowing what could happen they then also were below speed and did not react to other information they received.
But yes, AF 449 was pretty dumb as well. Sad part is that it would not have happened if the captain would not have been asleep in the crew quarters.
Not to mention some aeroflot accidents, some seem like the pilots were plain dumb.

I believe it’s the warning you get when the plane is at 50ft or less from the ground
It is the radio altimeter. McDonnell Douglas use this instead of the call out 50, 40, 30 etc.

The rest of the cockpit crew is trying to alert the captain that he's low and slow during icing conditions. Sadly, the captain is either too egotistical, preoccupied or distracted to listen 😔

I think that the pilot flying was the First officer because the captain said that the speed was low and the pilot monuturing ussualy calls out speed altitude etc.

@@yukonstriker1703 - this crash occurred in late December of 1992, which if you weren't aware is Winter in the northern hemisphere. And while Portugal normally has a rather warm climate the local temperature at Faro that evening had dipped below 10°C with a dewpoint in a similar range. These were the conditions at ground level, and if you knew anything about meteorology you would know that the temperature decreases as your altitude increases and the air thins. So, yes, this aircraft was descending through icing conditions. Next time, please attempt to do at least a LITTLE amount of research before you start commenting with such large amounts of sarcasm and drivel 😒

Is it just me or most of the fatal recordings from Tri-Jet planes? Seems like they were proper death traps when they first arrived on the scene.
That probably has more to do with the era in which they existed.
I flew in the era when they were on the way out and the old salts called them 'Death Cruisers' (DC)

It’s just statistics. There were a lot of them made. They crashed no more or less than other types of planes on a percentage basis.
(I’m excluding the 3 DC-10 crashes that happened before the discovery of a design flaw on that particular aircraft).
There were a lot of DC-10s built and they had a lot of problems.
Some of the wreckage from the mid cabin section was still near the taxiway years after the accident.

I flew on a DC-10 with Varig from Toronto to Rio and survived.
Varig was an outstanding company, I remember travelling to Brazil with them and getting a meal that could be served in any restaurant, and ate with silverware too. Old times when travelling by plane was a luxury even in economy class.

What exactly is causing the "kettle tone" alert?
My guess is either an autopilot disconnect or a GPWS alert.
Not sure what it is specifically on the DC-10 but it may be some sort of altitude alert; either signifying to pull up, signifying terrain potentially.

The start of the 'kettle' tone is a horn to announce to the flight crew that the radio altimeter is passing 50ft in descent just before landing.

It was a stormy day and the tower gave the pilots an incorrect wind check so the plane flew into very heavy cross wind which caused it to crash on the runway.

Kinda sparse information here on what actually went wrong. Did they fly into the ground; stall; icing condition? And no comm with the tower included? I don't dial up these things for the gory crash. I watch to find out what went wrong with a complex system. This tells me next to nothing.

The owner of the Airline Martinair (Martin Schroder) says it was the cause of a windshear. But many survivors tel a different story. They say the weather was simply to bad for a save landing.
About six months ago ,there was still a lawsuit about this in Holland.
You nailed it though, the complex system did fly into the ground, which was not of it's intended use and not up to current CE certifications. That's the long story.
