Dr. Sharma begins the video by explaining what Peripheral Vascular Disease is. He explains that it is a blood circulation disorder wherein the narrowed blood vessels decrease the blood flow to the limbs. PVD occurs in the arteries and veins. It can affect the vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the arms, stomach, digestive organs, and kidneys. He elaborates on the causes of Peripheral Vascular Disease, which are either genetic or acquired. Among the acquired reasons, hypertension is the commonest, followed by smoking and high cholesterol levels. PVD can be divided into various types, such as Stenosis. Dr. Sharma then explains the symptoms of Peripheral Vascular Disease, and the most widespread ones are -
1. Numbness or tingling in the legs
2. Buttock pain
3. Weakness or burning sensation in the feet or toes while resting
4. Hair loss on both the legs
5. A sore on the leg or foot that does not heal
6. Impotence
The way to diagnose PVD is simple and a non-invasive technique. Many a time, medicines are enough to deal with Peripheral Vascular Disorders. But, safe angioplasty is another option.
Dr. Sharma then explains the other type of PVD wherein there is a rupture of the vessels, known as dissection. The third type of PVD is aneurism, wherein the blood vessels are inflated. Both these two types of Peripheral Vascular Diseases can be fatal. The primary treatment of both these two conditions is surgery. But, the mortality rate is slightly higher in surgery, as per research. Dr. Sharma concludes the video by explaining the various non-invasive and safe, modern techniques of dealing with PVDs.
