This is the first tune my first band put together. Thanks, Kris, for wanting to do the vocals and giving us such a simple, straightforward tune! (We did it fairly well, and Kris almost hit the vocals.)

Lads! You're pausing on the caesura! That the silent break before the actual coda - the end of the song (called an "outro" sometimes). You really need pausing practice! It those precise silences that defines how tight a band is. DP was tight indeed.

"Bullets flying / wait for the ricochet" Ricochet is French word for "bullets bouncing and hitting something else - probably you".

PPPS - Deep Purple is an amazing band with many hits; but - they are known for massive personnel changes. Folks who follow DP always ask who's in the band's line-up on a certain performance. You got the originals at their peak.

As the father of two autistic children, I interpret the lyrics as being about someone being trapped in his or her own mind without the tools to express themselves. The cries in the song, to my ear at least, convey the inner turmoil, the being misunderstood, and the astute fear my kids experience every day. The bullets flying are the insults they have to endure on a daily basis as the world around them dies not understand them. It is indeed an intense piece.

You gotta keep in mind that these guys, along with Zepplin and Sabbath, were inventing a whole new genre of music. This is like watching Watt invent the steam engine . Momentous stuff!
And it still ROCKS!! 50 (that's right, I said 50 years later.
Some of you don't have grandparents that old!!
Keep up the good work exploring some of this ancient music and how fookin' good it is lads. (I can talk like that 'cause I'm 64).
    Stay healthy. Peace from Australia.

You guys are great. Literally, the first time my dad played this song for me, I was like my man on the right there in the video. Speechless. Mouth wide open in shock and awe. An amazing performance. All white rock musicians owe everything to brothers and sisters like Little Richard, Muddy Waters, Son House, Buddy Guy, Aretha Franklin, Robert Johnson and more. I didn't grow up on a plantation, but when my brothers and sisters sing the blues or gospel, it cuts right into my soul. God bless, great video, keep going!

This was filmed in a television studio and so they are much more subdued, probably told to behave themselves by the bosses at the studio. You might spot a man wearing a light pink top at the back of the audience on the right hand side, that is the late great George Best, one of the greatest ever footballers. George was a mate of the singer, Ian Gillan. Deep Purple always displayed wonderful musicianship.

Back in the day, the public for these BBC recordings consisted of family and friends of the people who worked there plus a handful of folks plucked off the streets. And then there's the fact not a lot of people were yet used to this style of music. A lot of folk were still wearing flowers in their hair and were mentally still roaming the streets of San Fransisco. This was 1970, keep in mind.

Ian Gillan's discovery that he could do a Top A on full voice came in handy in an increasingly crowded rock arena, dominated by singers with large ranges. Rather modestly, he has recently pointed out that Deep Purple were primarily an instrumental group with singers. Which sells short not only him but every other vocalist they've had.

Triple decker piano? That's a Hammond organ. Organists do that routinely, they play with two hands on two of any number of keyboards simultaneously (the largest organ in the world has 6) and with their feet on yet another one. Especially classical organists. Watch some classical organ clips, I recommend you my good friend Xaver Varnus, one of the greatest organists alive today

This is one song I wanted to request to you guys. It is good someone gave you a donation to do it. Ian Gillan the vocalist wrote this. This song is dubbed "Rock Art" there is really nothing like it. Gillan has a 4 octave voice and can singer higher than a woman. He is the innovator of the Rock High Voice" or "Scream" Gillan doesn't scream at all. His voice is controlled. You will see him put his finger in his ear to hear his falsetto clearer so he can control the note. Led Zeppelin's Roger Plant Screams it.
He cries three times at twice. You can feel the sorrow in those notes. It is like a lullabye a mother sings to her child. I think about this song and cry with him it is so unusual.
Gillan is the original Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar doing the Original London Studio Cast Recording. Gillan waked into the studio and a little over 2 hours, completed his entire performance on Superstar. The entire album is about 2 hours long. I can't imagine he even performed one line twice more than a few times. He did it to perfection. Sadly, he never performed it on stage being faithful to Deep Purple. He lost his voice in about 1974. He could not perform this song anymore. His original version going up all 4 octaves. When he lost it, he had a guitar perform what he couldn't. Gillan was a heavy drinker and drugs. I have never seen a vocalist lose their voice so fast. In his personal life he had a one girlfriend til about the 80's then, Married Bron. He renewed his marriage vows two more times after the wedding. Nice to see in a Rock Star.
Gillan's performance at Royal Albert Hall was written in 3 minutes just before he stepped on stage. His voice is full and rich. He is at his peak in looks and sound.
These men are all, including Gillan, top musicians. You will note, after the band performs in the middle of the song, live, they all come to a dead stop. Which is nearly impossible to do.
Really enjoyed the show today. I wish I had donated and requested it. There are so many songs I'd love to see you guys do. Have to pick one or two. Wish I could ask for them all, but I don't have enough money. I don't want to give you guys a small amount. I think you deserve as much as I can give. You always do a great job and out of all these reaction video channels, I think you guys really make people happy. Just like you said Elvis's voice. Exactly what my mother said about him when I was a little child.
    Thanks!

i was one of the lucky guys from birmingham who was around in the 70s and thís music from deep purple. they to me were one of many great bands. unfortunately to me the music has changed for the worst. it is all computerized now and not many guitarists can finger pick. it is all strumming on the guitar

I reacted on another Deep Purple Child in Time reaction video , where I commented about the public looking like zombies , like somebody forced them to be there , and I was laughing when you guys mentioned it already early in the video !!

Yes they were told to not make any noise so as to not distract from the band.

Correct. The T V people didn't want audience noise on the live recording. They told the crowd don't react until after the song is over.

Deep Purple got their name - or so he says - when guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's Gran thought it would be nice if he named his new group after her favourite song: ruclips.net/video/XY0DBrTPHFM/видео.html
