    You bring up an excellent point regarding screen resolution, display scaling, and ability to see information. I have the same issue as you with 2560x1600 laptop displays in that 125% scaling is too small to be useful. I don't have this problem on 1920x1080 notebooks - those I can even run at 100% scaling and still have a comfortable experience.

    Josh, I recently came across your channel while looking for a laptop around Black Friday.
    Your reviews are so informative, so detailed, that they've become addictive - and I've ended up watching loads of them (even after purchasing) simply because it's such a joy to see you go through them.
    I'm into a number of hobbies, and I've never seen any reviews as deep and useful as yours. You stand in a league of your own!

    2:24 This may be due to LG Gram's embedded MiraGlance function. The webcam tracks your eye movement and jumps your mouse cursor to where you're looking at. Sounds good on paper, but annoying in real life, so I ended up turning that feature off

    Text clarity is probably much more impacted by the matte display coating (considering also brightness already hits 350 nits which is sufficient for majority of indoor use). Of course there can be significant difference even between different matte coatings (some are much more hazy than others) but even the lightest haze impacts the clarity of the pixels compared to a glossy coating.
    There are of course other factors such as subpixel layout but probably not applicable here, most laptop displays are IPS with a similar structure.

    Thanks for this review. I have the 2020 Gram 17" and it's one of my favorite computers I've owned and will absolutely get another when I want to upgrade. I do agree with your take on the cost. I went with costco for 1300 and wouldn't have paid the 1700. The 17" QHD is perfect. I looked at some 15.6 and 16 inch QHD laptops around black Friday and was disappointed that I'd need to run display scaling when I'm currently at 100% on this 17".

    Nice PC. One thing is the design of the numpad. The keys are smaller and closer together. Also the"enter" and "plus" keys are not set to the right of the numbers like a typical calculator. As a result this numpad is not condusive for fast numeric input for programs like "Excel". The "enter" key is in the lower right corner and it is a small key. This numpad should be either redesigned or removed as it is not very useful in its current state. I notice a number of manufacturers are designing them this way. I do not know what they are thinking. If they are building a PC with a numpad they should design it correctly. Look at the older 15.6 Spectre or Envy of that had a full size numpad designed correcly. Anyway you did an excellent review.

    I got the Gram 16 RTX 3050 for mostly office work, youtube watching and occasional flight sim. Compared to the regular Gram 16, the screen feels sturdier and doesn't wobble, and the speakers sound much better (higher wattage than on regular Gram 16). I also tested ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 but prefered Gram's light weight.

    I'm interested in this LG gram, probably more the 17 inch (I really like big screens).
    My maximum work flow would be: 30-40 chrome tabs open and at the same time light Photoshop and InDesign usage, word, VS code and maybe slack or zoom open (but not that often).
    Do you think the LG can handle these tasks or is it going to get hot and lag like crazy?
    I found the Gram 2022 i7 16gb ram at 1500€ or the 2021 version at 1.000€. Do you think is it worth spending more for the 2022 version?

    Hey Josh, regarding the LG Gram View +, don't waste your time and money on a meter, the monitor is the issue not your Dell or my Lenovo Yoga. I sent it back and ordered a Chinese alphabet soup monitor to test that theory and I was right, the Moteyeowe 15.6 inch 2k monitor works via the USB-C port which is also providing power, it also has a mini HDMI port with both cables and a power supply in the box, I paid $239 CAD, the LG is $400. I can't believe a company the size of LG can't get their port protocol right, but this shonky Chinese monitor not only works but it's bight enough for office work and the colour reproduction is decent, it's also more compact as the lower bevel is a good half the size of the LG.

    LG should go for an AMD APU for power management, ditch the numpad to allocate front facing speakers, use a high quality touch screen, and market it for coders with a Linux variant that would also cost less and capture a great fan base.

    Awesome review! Indeed, finally you reviewed an LG Gram, thanks Josh!!
    I think LG've made a mistake by speccing this gen with the P series instead of U series. This chassis was designed for the U series, and my trusty LG Gram 15 with the i5-8250U runs like a dream, to this day. I routinely have at least 30 if not more tabs open, as well as standard officey stuff, and no fan noise nor stuttering nor heating up.
    Its been perfect thus far, but I was beginning to get tempted by the latest gen seeing as they were 16:10 & also trotting the new Big.Little architecture from Intel. Now after watching your review, I'm gonna hold off, sit tight & wait for the next refresh.
    Cheers Josh, this one was superb, as always :))

    I greatly value your opinions however, at that price point I both agree and disagree. At that price point, I can't think of a category where this laptop is not outclassed even after the sale. it does seem as though the only thing this device has going for it is portability. I do agree that this device requires a "special" buyer indeed.

    I have one of these - I don't need power for day to day use - so I am one of your ideal users.
    Interesting comments wrto Excel - I use this all the time but I never, regardless of my machine have them zoomed out with loads of lines - can't see why I would ever do that - but I get your point.
    Frankly, 'high res' screens do not impress me anyway.
    As for brightness, is this a Texas thing? I've had mine a couple of months and , in the gloomy UK, I haven't needed to turn it to max brightness yet - one thing (I can't remember you mentioning) is the high minimum brightness which is a pain - it doesn't go low enough for dark conditions.
    Right on board with your comments re: best running set up. I had to buy the i7 to get 32gb of RAM - this offers no advantage over the i5 in this machine, causes too much heat to be generated and eats more power than my wife's i5 version, by some margin. Such a waste.
    I bought mine at £1000 uk via a reseller - at that price I was happy - at full list £1850, I would not have touched it.

    Great review. Personally I prefer the 3:2 aspect ratio vs 16:10 for a compact laptop with a high pixel density. Frankly, everything I see from reviewers is that MacBooks are the way to go in the $1,800 to $2,500 Cdn range. I just wish reviewers (in general terms and not necessarily pertinent to Josh's reviews) would be honest in foregoing referencing the price of the base MacBook Air - 8GBs and 256GBs of storage are not sufficient today. Once you factor in Apple's ludicrous upgrade pricing for an Air with 16GBs of RAM and 512GBs of storage then it's not really a worthy contender, even in comparison to a 14" Pro version with the same amounts of memory and storage. The M1 Pro is still faster than the M2 and the MacBook Pro comes with a better screen and fans for less throttling. And for the price of this configured Air than a Windows based OLED version is competitive, as both these computers aren't really meant for heavy and intense use. Finally, I'm tired of references to built in speaker quality. Other than needing sufficient sound quality for video calls any person caring about sound for movies and/or music will have to rely on headphones.

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 2 года назад

      We buy a few for our business, and the base MB Air is fine as we keep nothing on the drives apart from the software. My personal MB Pro 13 M1 is only using 80GB of 256GB, and I wonder why I would need more. I use the cloud for docs and an external drive for media. An external drive means I can use it with any device, from phones to tablets to laptops. I am sure there is a small percentage of consumers that want more storage, but 90% of ultrabooks sold are the base models, so I feel they are the best comparison. For prosumers, that is when you need larger internal drives, with 512GB being a bare minimum.

    • @johnpereira6934
      @johnpereira6934 2 года назад

      @@andyH_England Personally, I think using the cloud for storing work files is somewhat folly. I've heard enough about cloud based servers being down where everyone in the office or school is unable to be productive because they have no access to their work files. Cloud based storage is great for backups, but I have serious concerns about basing all one's work files in the cloud. And in the situation you mention I wonder if the a MacBook Air is overkill. In a similar situation (not necessarily yours and I'm trying not to make too many assumptions) a cheaper laptop would likely be a wiser financial solution. I believe a Windows based laptop system or desktop system (if mobility is not required) would be more cost effective and depending on usage and cloud storage of work files a Chromebook might also be a wiser solution.
      I still believe 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is too limiting now and in the future. Using external drives is a clunky and slow solution to adding more storage. I doubt most people use Thunderbolt external drives that perform nearly as quick as the internal drives. That's my two cents worth.

    I find that I needed to set custom scaling to around 135% on mine, and legacy apps look noticeably blurry like this. I’m not sure though why you blame the need to do this on the brightness of the display rather than its particular combination of display size and resolution; presuming the same OS and settings, how bright the screen is won’t affect the size of text or images, and if that affects legibility for you, well, I’m not sure why that is. I’m fairly nearsighted and have been using a 14” 1080p matte screen that definitely doesn’t get as bright as this one (which I’ve never felt the compunction to raise to its maximum setting), but can run it at 110% scaling comfortably.
    I’m curious given all that about the 16” Lenovo you mentioned-do you think it is more comfortable to use because it’s brighter, or does it have a different resolution for the same display size?

    • @bilditup1
      @bilditup1 2 года назад

      Am not sure if I’ll be keeping the machine, but if I don’t, it’ll likely come down to the display scaling and some of the keyboard oddness. I have also found that Windows Hello doesn’t work if you’re too close, which I will be if I’m lying down; this made me wish they didn’t omit the fingerprint sensor. Otherwise, I love the finish in comparison with Grams of previous years, and the review was thorough yet fair per usual. Thanks!

    • @bilditup1
      @bilditup1 2 года назад

      Oh, one other thing-in addition to the rather generous external I/O, there are two full size M.2 slots internally according to the spec sheet. My guess is that you’ll only be able to use single-sided drives in them, but between that and the SD slot, that’s a serious amount of internal storage for a machine this small. My current daily driver, an X1 Carbon 6th Gen (performance-wise an extreme laggard behind any of this year’s Intel P or AMD U machines) has a secondary M.2 port, but only 2242, and requires a relatively rare B+M keyed PCIe drive. I have yet to find a 1TB drive that is B+M rather than M-keyed, and there is not enough vertical space to use an adapter (which would have to be bespoke-ordered from tindie). So props to LG for that inclusion.

    This is pretty interesting, but since this laptop is made for casual users who expect a great experience, why not just buy last year's macbook pro at around the same price point as the non-256gig version of this laptop.
    Tbh, extending that thinking, there's just no point to buying much of anything other than a mac once you hit the 700 dollar price range(considering the used market) unless a person wants to play games, or the software they want to run does not work well or does not exist on the M series macs.

    My LG Gram 16 managed 40 days before trying to regularly cook itself at almost zero load - 85-90+C temps with the fans going wild - for no reason. Not that LG seems to care.
    So based on my experience so far, don't touch them with a bargepole until they fix their shitty support attitude and the random overheating.
    When it wasn't impersonating a portable heater, the screen, keyboard and other stuff were just fine. I used my mostly with external displays, but did several multi-hour sessions on trains & planes where the screen was pretty good.

    Hey, Josh
    Love your content. Very helpful.
    I can currently get a demo unit (excellent condition) of the LG gram 16, 2 in 1 , i5 1340p /16/512 for $1222aud/$807usd.
    Should I snap it up? I want a PC for light photo editing and general use.
    Cheers
    Anyone else can chime in. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hah. Why can't Windows laptops improve the speakers? If it is because of weight, then sell a user-replacible speakers. I wouldn't mind extra 100g or even 200g of weight, if I could get the sound quality of MacBook.

      I got the Gran 17Z90P and yeah the speakers (key texture & stabilization too) are even worse than my 2017 Zenbook 13 😝 Love the rest of the laptop tho 👍
      On the other hand Zenbook 14X review just dropped. Best laptop speakers for $700.
      Andrew Mark David has an awesome speaker sound test comparison to the Macbook Pro 14 if you wanna get a good feel on what it sounds like.

    If you're going to spend over $1k on a laptop and you don't game, just get a MacBook.

      Some just prefer Windows especially for some work/school and even if don't game now you could still play some less CPU and GPU games on Steam or the Microsoft store.

      Funnily enough we did re RX declick. This video was terrible audio wise. It was filmed a while ago. We have since improved how we record it. Garbage in = garbage out
