- Starting from the evening of April 21, 1945, the German units of the 26th Panzer-Division retreated into a very critical situation up to the Po di Volano, south of Ferrara, also preparing defensive positions to the west and east of the city. Between the evening of the 22nd and the morning of April 23, the British reached the southern outskirts of Ferrara, prompting the Germans to abandon their positions to establish new ones further north, defending the assembly points for crossing the River Po. In this context, the lack of bridges and ferries was decisive. All Germans were engaged in searching for makeshift means such as doors, windows, and beams; many soldiers drowned in attempts to swim across, while others fell under enemy fire, with aircraft continuously surveilling the river in the light of flares and artillery pounding the embarkation points.
At 1:30 p.m. on April 22, 1945, the 1st Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders replaced the 3/8 Punjab Regiment, which was positioned along the Adriatic Highway about ten kilometers from the southern outskirts of the city of Ferrara and behind the armored vehicles of a squadron of the 6th Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers, the vanguard of the 8th Indian Infantry Division. Meanwhile, to the west of the Po di Primaro, along the road parallel to Highway 16, the 1/5 Mahratta Light Infantry advanced, always preceded by the armored vehicles of another squadron of the 6th Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers and the tanks of the North Irish Horse. The tenacious opposition of the German infantry, accompanied by tanks, combined with blown bridges and craters on the roads, slowed the advance of the 6th Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers, which only reached the Po di Volano at 6:00 p.m. In the meantime, the 5th Royal West Kent Regiment advanced along the San Bartolomeo in Bosco - San Martino - Cassana route, bypassing the city from the west and managing to capture an intact bridge over the Burana Canal; this bridge was used the following day by the battalion, supported by Churchill tanks, to reach the River Po, an operation that was completed at 10:45 a.m. in front of the Malcantone fraction of Occhiobello. In the meantime, the 1/5 Mahratta Light Infantry had moved along Highway 64 to neutralize German forces defending the airport area. Only in the evening of April 23 were the southern banks of the Po di Volano and the Burana Canal fully reached. At 4:45 a.m. on April 24, a company of the 1st Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders crossed the Po di Volano and entered the southeast outskirts of Ferrara without encountering opposition; indeed, the Germans had abandoned the city the previous day. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were warmly welcomed and celebrated along the streets by a large crowd of citizens.
The “Colonna della Libertà” (the Convoy of Liberation) takes place as part of the official Liberation Day celebrations in Italy, in memory of April 25, 1945. A convoy of WWII historical military vehicles covers the same routes the Allies used in liberating Italy during the Italian campaign.
The event is organized by the MuseoGotica of the Gotica Toscana APS association from Scarperia (Florence) and by the Museo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale del fiume Po at Felonica (Mantua) which operate in close cooperation with History Military Vehicles Italia, every year with a new program in different locations, always connected to specific events of the Italian Campaign.

Senza il contributo militare, economico e di vite umane , molte peraltro perdute, non sarebbe stato possibile liberare il. ns paese dalla occupazione dell' ex alleato, ovviamente gia' presente in forze anche prima del 25 Luglio.La storia del periodo Badogliano e' nota e solo un mentecatto poteva pensare che i tedeschi non potessero rinforzare militarmente il loro fronte sud od addirittura abbandonarlo.Molti storici occidentali hanno invece denominato la guerra in Italia " una guerra inutile" compiuta risalendo lo stivale montuoso proprio dal tacco posto all' estremo sud Da 1400 anni, dai tempi del bizantino Belisario non accadeva un simile avvenimento .La risalita del paese fu dunque lenta e dolorosa sia per gli abitanti italiani che per gli alleati. L' esito della seconda guerra mondiale come e' noto si decise su altri fronti e comunque l' Italia pago' un prezzo altissimo per questo lungo calvario, forse strategicamente deciso. sui tavoli che contavano.Saluti.
