San Francisco actually has two metros that run in a bee line under Market Street parallel to the I-80 Expressway. SF and the Bay Area is a classic example of too much urbanization on too little buildable land. The two most notable bridges - the Golden Gate and the Bay Bridge - were originally built in the 1930s, on less than ideal terrain. The replacement of the Eastern 2/3 of the Bay Bridge had to be done while they kept the cantilever spans operating between Oakland and Treasure Island. An interesting note: When they built the Bay Bridge, the lower deck had suburban trains, trolley cars, and two lanes for truck traffic, and the Trans-Bay Terminal was tied into the SF approaches for the train traffic. When I was a student in Berkeley, they had converted that to a bus station some 20 years prior, when they ripped out the tracks and converted to the top deck running inbound and the lower deck running outbound - and toll-free - to Oakland and the East Bay. An interesting note: the tolls were only supposed to be in effect until the bridges were paid for... at least, that was the story that was sold to the voters... But, governments being what they are, the toll plazas, with their inevitable traffic jams are a fact of life. The East Bay Toll Plaza is know to be one continual snarl... The Golden Gate Bridge had its toll Plaza in SF - it's a mess too, but the Bridge Authority (or whatever they are calling themselves these days) pretty much *must* keep things as efficient as possible... which is none too great. These days, the tolls are ever higher, even with transponders and license plate scanners... There is literally nothing else that can be done with the Golden Gate - the Marin headlands are a tight squeeze for the 101 freeway, and the SF end is what it is. When they built the bridge, the Army had their Coast Artillery emplacements to consider as well, and the Navy had their concerns if the bridge were to be destroyed by a hostile power - two major naval shipyards, a couple of civilian ones, and the oil refineries up from Richmond to Suisun Bay... There are several other major bridges around the Bay, all undersized and not readily expandable to varying degrees. BART runs through the Trans-Bay tube, but it is a sad shade of the traffic capacity that the Southern Pacific, Key-Route, and Sacramento Northern had on the Bay Bridge. At that, by the 1920s, the various governments and civic groups around the Bay had realizes that the Southern Pacific Railroads network of ferryboats was not up to the task, and was hopelessly under capable in the case of inclement weather. There are some interesting news articles in the archives regarding ferry collisions, sinkings, groundings, and other mayhem on foggy nights and in stormy weather. Bottom Line: SF and the surrounding Bay Area has far outgrown its available land area to sustain the population, and commuting times from more affordable ex-urbs are horrendous - and the fares and tolls are not really affordable either. I live in the Bay Area (Oakland, which wasn't even on this map). If only they would listen to you, Biffa. The politics, environmental studies, and/or other contentious legal issues for things like Rights of Way, has always made transportation challenging here. With Cov19 SIP orders, it is spooky to go on the freeways now and never encounter a bottleneck, not to mention freeway accident backing up traffic for many miles. It is compounded by having the major business centers of many large companies and corporations that employ 1,000s of people who pour in and out of a small 7mi. by 7mi. peninsula, not to mention the tens of thousands who commute from Silicon Valley (San José) to San Francisco every day for work and it is a recipe for trouble. SFMOMA=San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, a wonderful museum. The recent Magritte exhibit was exquisite.
15:35 You make the 3-lane road be 1 lane for each direction, while not giving them time to change lane, effectively forcing all the traffic from the highway to go right.
Biffa. 30%? That's moving for SF. You should see it during rush hour IRL. I used to live 15 miles away and when BART (rapid transit) was out and I had to drive in over that bridge and it took 2 hours sometimes.
I think the people of San-Francisco would happilly welcome Biffa as their new major - who will improve the city drastically that the traffic would flow better
I had hot chocolate. Close enough? Or no? I also commented on one of your videos about that you should fix real life city traffic. Was that inspiration or is it coincidence that we had the same idea? Maybe you could do London next. You know, tea? Very authentic here in England so it makes sense. Yes, I live in England. Tea is important at this time of year. You know, for warmth.
i have to laugh at the "no lane changes" option.....Trust me, they really dont do what they are told in the bay area... what happened to the Bay Area rapid transit system? (B.A.R.T.) . thats jam packed all the time. the best part is its underground.
Oh my, this is horrifically accurate, except for the metro and bus lines. Take a look at the BART (metro) and Muni (bus) maps to get a more accurate public transit picture.
Irl SF has a ton of mass transit, including a sprawling metro (BART) with a major trunk line through downtown which splits into a bunch of branches after crossing the bay, a large light rail/tram system that serves much of the city and is also underground through downtown (MUNI metro), a vintage streetcar and cable car system, busses and trolley busses, and a diesel commuter train which is being upgraded into an electric train (Caltrain).
This dude solves traffic problem plaguing cities in like 15-30 minutes, and urban planners have to take in some cases decades to try to fix the problems.
He had it accurate before ya fixed it...SF is pretty much a traffic nightmare which is why the BART system is so well used...and if it were really SF, it would have taken more than a decade to get approval and permits and tens of billions to accomplish what you did in less than 30 min! Well done Biffa!
Needs to use the Natural Disasters DLC and have an earthquake just to undo everything Biffa has done. Plus will make it more realistic for San Francisco.
Don't know why, but seeing all this smoothly running traffic doesn't make me think of this as an American city. Traffic backing up appears to be a landmark of the country.
To be fair, SF has a lot more public transportation options than one tiny subway line and one ferry line 😂😂 I always got around on public transit alone
When you brought up the transit, i almost peed myself from laughing so hard. Haha. One Ferry, and One Metro. Made me laugh. SF has the BART, A trolley system (cable cars, not gondola), Busses, Taxis. The whole range of everything. SFMOMA: I believe is the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA)
i honestly miss the days of building mental cities like this. now i build cities with no less than 80% traffic without even trying and it kind of boring not having to fix 319 miles of traffic
nice fix again, biffa. You manage to keep this entertaining still. tho I (and a lot with me) are still hoping for a new city of your own. Any particular reason you're not doing this (yet)?
Here’s me thinking that this was going to be the first episode where no roundabouts were going to be used... apparently this was not the case here haha
Really disturbing how accurate that is, it’s very surreal to see roads I’ve actually been stuck in rush hour on. (Spent Soooo many hours in traffic on the bay bridge) But without Oakland, Richmond and The Seuth Baythis is on easy mode. Also Google’s Mountain View Campus ruins traffic for miles because their is an immediate right turn right after the off ramp. Great video, too bad this will never happen until that city collapses.
Nice fix Biffa, One massive problem I see in the downtown area that there is a 4 lane road, with 2 bus lanes on it. These bus lanes are not used by cars and not by buses as there are no bus lines. How is this road even realistic? Put at least a 4 lane for traffic and then maybe additional bus lanes in if you use buses! Downtown needs more than just 2 lanes. Definitely not 8 lanes but more than 2!
Hi, just bought cities skylines after watching your vids. What dlc did you install except mass transit to have trams ? I can't see them in the menu... as someone who lives in the bay I can assure you that the traffic does not look this good it can stretch on for miles but we have gotten a few roundabouts where I live so I guess the US is experimenting a little
@9:56 no roundabout needed. The lane coming from the left should be dedicated straight on and the traffic joining from underground should be right only
Oh Man, that's a hornet's nest. Yea the one route through downtown isn't multi-layered it's 2 different systems 6 lines on each slowly getting through that bottleneck. The map didn't do all the trams, ferries and the like. Its a nightmare. 50 years people have stopped mass transit along the golden gate bridge.
The traffic stuck on the bridge, the small intersections, and the toll booths is 100% realistic.

Brilliant! Let's hope someone sends in a map of Sydney next ;-P
you said every like is a sip of tea.. I liked... you actually took a sip of tea !!
It all depends on what cities people send in 👍
Ok. London traffic isn't great. But I haven't been in a while so it could've improved
18:14 SFMOMA = "San Francisco Museum of Modern Art"
Literally written on the line below SFMOMA :-)
You're welcome.
👍
"If you're GOINNNG to Saaan FraaanSiccooo...
You gonna seeee... Biffaaa fixinnng traffiiic..."
(
known song)
i have to laugh at the "no lane changes" option.....Trust me, they really dont do what they are told in the bay area... what happened to the Bay Area rapid transit system? (B.A.R.T.) . thats jam packed all the time. the best part is its underground.
BART in SF is underground. Almost every station from Oakland onwards is above ground.
Such *perfect* music in the before and after section of the video, Biffa! :-D
Thank you marchutch :-)
Those backups are a mirror of what SF is really like
Oh my, this is horrifically accurate, except for the metro and bus lines.
I fell asleep while high and woke up flying through the city as a 1980's news reporter helicopter pilot!!!
Auto-play is a wild experience.
He had it accurate before ya fixed it...SF is pretty much a traffic nightmare which is why the BART system is so well used...and if it were really SF, it would have taken more than a decade to get approval and permits and tens of billions to accomplish what you did in less than 30 min! Well done Biffa!
Biffa for Mayor!.... having been stuck in that traffic way too often....you would get my vote!
👍
The metro from downtown San Francisco does actually go all the way to the airport
patton3rd1 BART*
i honestly miss the days of building mental cities like this. now i build cities with no less than 80% traffic without even trying and it kind of boring not having to fix 319 miles of traffic
Hi Biffa. I really enjoy your videoes, such an inspiration for my own cities 👍
The problem with using City Skylines for fixing real world places, is that people don't drive like they do in the game
16:20 problem is too many intersections too close to each other which requires fixing not a round a bout. This is a huge problem ALL OVER this city
IMA FAN FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA LOVE THIS
nice fix again, biffa. You manage to keep this entertaining still. tho I (and a lot with me) are still hoping for a new city of your own. Any particular reason you're not doing this (yet)?
The bridges are parking lots, and 880N is backed up from Berkeley all the way off the map... The beginning seems pretty realistic to me
Wow this city is so realistic! I mean about traffic of course :)
I'm a San Francisco and Bay Area native. This is a pretty accurate looking region.
Here’s me thinking that this was going to be the first episode where no roundabouts were going to be used... apparently this was not the case here haha
Biffa thinks this was made by one person when in fact it's made by several government traffic officials who don't know logistics.
That is an amazing city and a great job at fixing SF! Any we can find access to the city as well?
The mass transit in SF is actually pretty good. Trains go most of the main areas and there are a lot of bus routes.
Well done I imagine hard too build a city based on a real one and get it too work traffic wise
Lane Mathematics. I can say that in any Cities Skylines Twitch stream now as we all go BIFFA! Sips Tea
Never thought about lane mathematics.... Thank you.
Hi, just bought cities skylines after watching your vids. What dlc did you install except mass transit to have trams ? I can't see them in the menu... What kind of intersection would you recommend to enter the city ? Do you have a video on that ? Thanks in advance for your help, (i'm in unlimited mode)
I have all the DLC. Lots of playlists of me starting a city on my channel :-)
Lol SF rush hour is absolute hell, dead ass spent an hour on the same block once
One question:
_"Where's Alcatraz?"_
The prison? It was deactivated in the 1963 - the island is there, as usual 🙃
@@UnderEu the prison is still there though. I've been inside it...you know for tourism purposes.
@@METALFREAK03 I mean, for the game; IRL, I know the building is still there for tourism purposes - I visited last year and it's great.
"The world famous SFMOMA" ... you know, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art ... and no I didn't have to look that up, but then I was married to an art student
Darn, I was hoping you'd look at Lombard Street, Biffa.
You should try the GTA V map next. I haven’t actually played it to see what it’s like, but I’ve seen in on the workshop, and it looks like could be interesting traffic wise
This new intro gives me life.
as someone who lives in the bay I can assure you that the traffic does not look this good it can stretch on for miles but we have gotten a few roundabouts where I live so I guess the US is experimenting a little
The metro line was realistic, it's MUNI, which covers SF, then to join the Airport you take CalTrain then BART
