Thanks so much, just followed your video and have mounted my miniatures! Great instructions - really appreciate the effort you’ve gone to in making this video
Thanks, I followed each step of your video and I am quite pleased with the result of my three court mounted medals though it was not a nice moment when I had to cut the ribbons and release the medals from their original clasps. I look forward to wearing them on Armistice Day, they will look a lot neater than on previous years.
Thanks for the video been mounting a few sets for family. Could i ask where do you put clasps, i have the farther in law who now has a cadet forces medal and clasp. Ive seen them mounted at the bottom near the medal bar and i think i read something about the clasp been equidistant from the medal bar and top of the ribbon. Just wondered whats correct? Also when you have more than one clasp do they just go together and move up to keep the distance?
@@JesterRlP thanks this is what I've found before as it seems different for a CFM. 'The correct position is in the middle of the ribband. Not down low like the clasps on the service medals. [quote=“AP1358 Ch 8”] 0832. Mounting. …Bars and clasps are to be affixed so that they are equidistant from the top and bottom of the riband'
@@Kylethompson-y2z in that case, it's probably correct. As you probably know, Army Dress Regs don't cover CFMs. I don't think it would matter too much, so I'd recommend going with what you found 👍
@@JesterRlP thanks mate, wanted to ask because you may have seen more than me and I've seen them mounted all manner of ways 🫣 Thanks again for the great series of videos and the replies 👍
Hi, sorry if this has been asked but in your previous tutorial you stated always do medals with bars first then align from that bit here you say start from the right, also they don't seem to be level which I've learnt from you, they should be, thank you, your a great teacher 😊
Thank you! Yes you start mounting from the right, but in order to gauge where the bottom edges should be, you take a traditional 36mm medal such as LSGC, OSM, GSM, Iraq medal - and lay it half over the board, half overhanging. That's your bottom medal line right there. All the others' bottom edges should then meet that line 👍
@JesterRlP Thank you so much for replying so quick and with excellent D&G, out of all the tutorials I've seen, you are the best IMO, I just enjoy the way you break every detail down for ease of your viewers, may I ask about the Buckram? I can't find anywhere in the net his to make a Buckram board, I can purchase Buckram but what is it stuck to please?
@@kellyway3564 buckram is also known as pelmet hessian - can normally find it knocking around on ebay. It's basically cut to size, you then wrap black fabric (sheet cotton) around it, trim it at the edges and tack with fabric glue before attaching the ribbons.
Hi .sorry for the delayed response. For some reason I've not had some of these comments notified for some reason. The reason I haven't covered swing mounting yet is because of two things - one being nobody's asked me to do them that way for some time. Secondly, swing mount is usually done at public expense by the unit tailor so there's very little demand for it.
You can re-use the ribbon if you're extra careful removing it and it's not discoloured from glue, tape and dirt. Best to get new ribbon really, though 👍 I mentioned the supplies in thd description to the video.
@@GTH360 if you have 10 then you need this video (link below)... You can get free ribbon from the QMs if you're still serving - or see the tailor and offer them a jar of coffee / biscuits in exchange for 10 inches of each ribbon you need. Failing that, the ribbons are £2 each from messdress.com and the 6 space brooch is around 4.50 ish. ruclips.net/video/IjW8LtfyDj0/видео.html
Thanks Joe 👍 10 inches will be more than enough when mounting side by side. You'll get to trim it further once you've fed it through the brooch at the back and added the tape. Good luck with yours.
@@JesterRlP That's that's helpful. Can I ask, do medals always have to be mounted onto cardboard (and brooch) or can you hang them from the brooch bar only? And they go right to left in order that you get them?
@@JesterRlP thanks for the reply. Amazing video very helpful I am due two medals and had no idea how to mount them or what to do. Now I know. Set a weekend aside! I will follow this video carefully!
I didn't. I used to when I first started, but a single layer is more than enough - the brooch bar keeps it straight 👍 If you want to use two though, just tack them together with a stitch each corner - the rest of the stitching / fabric etc will hold them in place.
Since this is the British style of mounting, how would one theoretically go about mounting medals from countries that use different mounting styles, like triangular for Hungary and Austria, or pentagonal for Denmark and the former USSR?
I have absolutely no idea! My first thought would be to approach those individuals who offer the service - or to Google pictures of said medals to try and reverse-engineer the process?
@@JesterRlP Well, historically German, Austrian, and Russian empires went back and forth with their styles when they were giving them out to each other's officials and soldiery. And I've seen an old British bar with an Order of St. Anne on it in this presented mounting style, rather than the Russian one. But the only modern examples I've seen are for North Convoy veterans and they seem to go about it on an individual basis (one on a straight ribbon suspension, another keeping the Russian pentagonal suspension), and one Russian bar with a Former Yugoslavia NATO medal in the mix on a Russian-style mount. Most relevant use case might be with the Danish style, since that's the same as the Russian, except with a wider ribbon, and they're more integrated with other western powers. As to why they use a style the same as the Russians, I have no idea. Might be something related to the Napoleonic Wars, the same as why half of European countries' guards units use the collar bars German soldiers are always shown using.
My apologies, I didn't mean the ribbons, I meant the medals, but now I realized you have to have an overlap otherwise there would be a gap between the ribbons if medals were touching side by side - Sorry
Your board will be 69mm high of its standard medals - and as wide as a 6 space brooch bar. Here's the instructional vid for Overlapping: ruclips.net/video/IjW8LtfyDj0/видео.html
Just the standard craft stuff you get from the Range. Avoid the 3M type heavy industrial tape - the adhesive will eventually seep through, ruining the ribbons
@@JesterRlP can attest to that! I used sellotape double sided thin tape, some seepage through the ribbons I mounted my Grandad's medals with 7 years ago. It was quite sticky at the time when cutting
Good verbal commentary but the entire video would have been better if you'd not have got your hands in front of the camera so often! That said, you did an excellent job on the medals although I personally refuse to mount commemorative medals. That's just me though.

Hi, I just usually pick up the type you get at a stationery shop. The thinner the better (avoid the 3M stuff as it's far too thick / heavy duty).

Hello... It's all in the videos. Should also be in the description? www.messdress.com
What cloth are you using around the board?
Just standard black cotton sheet. But if you have an old pair of black trousers, you can also cut those up and use that instead.
