Great to see you are still alive! Not seen any content for ages. Thanks to your videos I have now taken this up and established an excellent “side-line”👍👍. Clearly the busiest time of the year for all of us now!
Appreciated, cheers 👍 yes the pandemic & working from home had a lot to answer for! As you'll know, it's a very time consuming process as it is - throw in several hours of video editing, and it literally eats up any spare time one may have!
@@JesterRlP Yes, very true
What is the black board you are mounting the medals onto
@@louisebirch4244 it's pelmet hessian covered in black sheet cotton. Check out this vid which shows it all: ruclips.net/video/5mZpIxCIa_o/видео.htmlsi=pcrT8C3U7P0h4gPO

@@louisebirch4244 hi, check out my new vid - this deals with clasps: ruclips.net/video/5mZpIxCIa_o/видео.htmlsi=pcrT8C3U7P0h4gPO
Love your videos - thank you. One part I struggle with is securing the medal to the board. It seems no matter how tight I try to sew the medal down, there's still too much movement after. I've tried different thread types and using wax to strengthen the thread, but I can't seem to get the medal properly fixed with little to no free-play. have you had this problem/any advice? many thanks
Hi Tom - thank you 😊 Yeah the loop of thread around whatever hangs the medal, is a bit of a lottery - it's not supposed to keep it rigid. If it's a ring fixing like the Jubilee or NATO medals, it will move a lot. A solid fixing such as LSGC or General Service Medal will be a lot steadier. I put blu-tac between the back of the medal and board to stop them "swinging" too much. Hope that helps?
@@JesterRlP thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Yes, that helps thanks. I’d love to see another video from you if you were willing to do one.

Great vids which have given me the confidence to try it myself. Quick question, how do you secure the felt on the back as a final touch please?
You can just use the double sided tape which will hold it firmly enough 👍

Are you still answering questions on this subject? I successfully mounted my husbands minis. But have a few snags with the full size.

Hi Mandy, Yeah sure... The order is as follows: 39-45 Star Burma Star Defence Medal 39-45 War Medal Long Service & Good Conduct Medal

Having watched your videos I am going to have a go at court mounting my medals. I am collecting up the bits and pieces I will need. Can you advise if the 10 inch length of medal ribbon is sufficient on a standard board? Many thanks
Yes it is 👍
Hi where do you buy the ribbon, buckrum etc
Hello... It's all in the videos. Should also be in the description? www.messdress.com
What length of ribbon would you use for mounting miniature medals? Thanks!
What length of ribbon would you use for mounting miniature medals? Thanks!
Six inches would be fine. Cut the board to 45mm in height and as wide as the brooch 👍
@@JesterRlP Thank you very much! I’m going to use your method to mount my Great Great Grandpa’s medals and miniatures from WW1.
All very nice work, thanks for sharing. I was just wondering how well the double sided tape will last as I have a number of things I used it on 20 years ago and its just turned to dust. Is there a museum quality tape available?
The tape is only really there to hold things in place until stitched, so its longevity is nothing to worry about too much 👍
Do you use this technique for mounting miniatures that require an overlap? I believe the max amount of side by side miniatures is 10.
Miniatures remain side by side + it's normally only the brooch bars which go up to 10. I managed to source a 12-space brooch bar on eBay for one set I did. It looks a bit "Kenny Everett" but that's the method! On the other hand, miniatures are a private thing, so if you want to overlap them, that's up to you. Bit finicky though 😉
Cheers mate. I’ve got a set of 12 to mount and the max I can find is a 10 bar. I’ll probably look at doing side by side however I’m wondering how the brooch bar would be fixed to the board?
Thank you
What cloth are you using around the board?
Just standard black cotton sheet. But if you have an old pair of black trousers, you can also cut those up and use that instead.
@@JesterRlP I bought an A4 sized piece of felt, is that too thick?
You proboably wont see this but thank you very much for the guide, it was very helpful!
Good Morning. Quick question. What kind of tape do you use? What brand? Thanks.
Hi, I just usually pick up the type you get at a stationery shop. The thinner the better (avoid the 3M stuff as it's far too thick / heavy duty).
Quick question if your monitoring this. I've six medals two are UN. As the board is 194mm with a six space mount clasp would o apply logic and have the last 5 medals overlap by 0.2 mm to compensate for the larger UN ribbon
There's two ways you can do this.... 1. Use a smaller board and a 5 space clasp overlapping the medals. 2. Put the medal ribbons side by side as close together as possible. There will be a small overlap at each edge of the board, but instead of feeding the ribbons through the slot in the brooch, just tack them down and put the brooch in position over the top and stitch it in the usual places as well as several stitches through the slot and top edge of the brooch to hold it in place properly. Hope that makes sense.
Hi, sorry if this has been asked but in your previous tutorial you stated always do medals with bars first then align from that bit here you say start from the right, also they don't seem to be level which I've learnt from you, they should be, thank you, your a great teacher 😊
Thank you! Yes you start mounting from the right, but in order to gauge where the bottom edges should be, you take a traditional 36mm medal such as LSGC, OSM, GSM, Iraq medal - and lay it half over the board, half overhanging. That's your bottom medal line right there. All the others' bottom edges should then meet that line 👍
@JesterRlP Thank you so much for replying so quick and with excellent D&G, out of all the tutorials I've seen, you are the best IMO, I just enjoy the way you break every detail down for ease of your viewers, may I ask about the Buckram? I can't find anywhere in the net his to make a Buckram board, I can purchase Buckram but what is it stuck to please?
@@kellyway3564 buckram is also known as pelmet hessian - can normally find it knocking around on ebay. It's basically cut to size, you then wrap black fabric (sheet cotton) around it, trim it at the edges and tack with fabric glue before attaching the ribbons.
@@JesterRlP Thank you for your endless stream of help 🤗
You are the Best medal mounter on RUclips 🎉.
What’s the length of the buckram for minitures
45mm
Another Question how do you make your buckram stiffer, it doesn’t seem thick enough
@@TheCarpyTraveller only by using a different type. It's a bit of a lottery, but to be honest I've used all types, and it's the brooch bar on the back which gives it its sturdiness.
Thanks for all the info. I’ll show you the outcome when I’ve give it a while!
Good luck 🤞
Is the pelmet hessian single stiff that you use?
@@TheCarpyTraveller yes
Also how do you secure the cotton on the buckram? Glue or the double sided tape?
Just tack it in place with a small blob of fabric glue. You're going to stitch over it anyway, so it just needs to be tacked in place until then. I'd advise against double sided at this stage - it makes it far more difficult to punch through with a needle.
Where do you get your buckram from and is it already stiff?
It is yes. You can buy it in strips from messdress.com - I got a whole sheet since I do loads, from ebay.
Do you have a link to the seller please
@@TheCarpyTraveller I ordered it ages ago - comes by the metre, I doubt you'd want that much You can get everything you need from messdress.com it's all in the vids. Have a look at my other vids, there's one called 'introduction' which tells you everything you need and where to get it from.
Where would I find the supplies to do this? I’m looking to save myself a bit of money and do my own. Clasp Ribbon Board Etc
www.messdress.com
Mate, I think that part of the medal, that you forgot the name of, is called the ‘hanger’? I may be wrong, but I think I’ve heard it referred to as that. Great vids by the way. 👍
What’s your opinion. For overlap with larger ribbons ie 38mm like nato and UN? With this method you use marking out the centreline of the ribbon, the ribbon overlap will be uneven, but the medals will be evenly spaced. To me this is the correct way. Or is the ribbon overlap supposed to be even and medals not evenly spaced? Thanks mate. Brilliant video
Yes the ribbons are supposed to be equally spaced / overlapped with at least ⅓ of the ribbon visible. That means of course, that a 38mm ribbon next to a 32mm ribbon will result in a 3mm difference in spacing between the medals (in some cases) but as the medals are all different sizes anyway (and indeed some are crosses), it won't make too much difference.
@@JesterRlP is that in the manual?
@@medic9544 yes it's in the regs. At least ⅓ ribbon exposed, evenly spaced 👍
My apologies, I didn't mean the ribbons, I meant the medals, but now I realized you have to have an overlap otherwise there would be a gap between the ribbons if medals were touching side by side - Sorry
Ah yes I see what you mean now 😂 Yes, some will actually sit side by side (such as Jubilee / Coronation) as they're smaller.
Why are these overlapped when there are only 2 x medals ? I though overlapping only happened with 5/6 medals (Build of wearer)
Erm, they aren't overlapped 🤔
With the coronation medal coming soon, i have found your video's very informative, and considering on having a go myself. i will have Nato Kosovo, Telic, GJ, DJ, PJ, Coronation and LS & GC with 2nd award. In regards to the dip can the telic medal be dipped? Looking it up it says its made from cupronickel rather than silver like the OSM. Thanks.
Yeah I've dunked the Iraq medal in the dip before, brings it up nice. Could always use an eraser if unsure but no problems to date. Good luck 👍
@JesterRlP thanks for the answer and a very fast one too.
These tutorials are great, saved myself so much money, Where can I get the rolls of medal ribbon?
