at the time Jill was unknown except underground - it would have never been a radio hit if Ms. Badu didn't sing it...actually it was never released as a single with Jill on it...just the roots live had it. stellar song in all regards.
I don't care how much times passes I'm going to be 80 years in the future still getting chills over that run Jill goes on. And those sustained notes......Thank you for blessing us queen.
jill scott sings like wild honey this track is fire blackthought comes through and delivers as usual ... real lyricism and sweet melody ... never gets old
when ad libs and improvisation elevate an already great song to something close to perfection...black thought, jill scott, and the legendary roots crew crafted a masterpiece here.
This is almost hypnotic ... I LOVE this version. No video required for me...but if there is one, I'd love to see it. Jill is phenomenal and this is what made me love Black Thought. There is none better.
Anyone who cannot vibe with this they are probably being closedminded/stubborn/ignorant. I am a HUUUUGE Erykah fan, more so a fan of hers than Jill's. Jill's performance is haunting. I love it. I heard them do this in Philly and when I heard it on Pandora later it was still amazing. Jill def. got this! Erykah does great as well. Each bring something different to the table. Do NOT disrespect the very woman who wrote this though. STOP and actually listen.
I'd never heard this version until the Verzus battle. I normally don't even like live recordings. But that breakdown at the end is something out of this world😫
Will never forget the first time I heard this song. I was driving home and listening to a late night radio show that was aired at the time called "black business" or "Esek Sh'hor" in Hebrew. I knew nothing about The Roots or Jill Scott but was immediate hooked. Had to stop the car and just listen and absorb. It was, and still is, mind blowing. What a masterpiece! 8 years later and I love it just as much.
Even though I love the original version with Erykah Badu but Jill is a BEAST!!! This version just gives me something different!! Thanks for uploading!!
This is actually the original version. Jill wrote the song and sang it but the label felt she wasn’t famous enough at the time and so they had Eryka sing the hook for the radio release.
2020 during my chill time at home during this Coronavirus epidemic. My heart pulls me towards some dope music... this song still 🔥🔥✌🏾❤ I hope you all are in good space at this moment.
Tear the club up!! Man it's been at least 10 years since I listened to this. I think my cd was scratched..like 18 years ago... legendary roots crew still going hard in 2018- love M's Jill Scott
When the original live version was put on RUclips it was close to that number, then it got pulled. Everyone now just mirrors it and edits the entire DC live version, I used to watch the original in 2008. Sad
This joint right here has been keepin me company during this COVID scamdemic fr fr. Thank you Jilly from Philly and you 2 The Roots...mad love for y'all.
saw this live in the park in philly "home" years ago voice so beautiful it was early solo dope thanks for the epic memory wit my philly phamily will never forget those melodic beats 4eva philly much love!$!
Live version of this is always gonna be the joint! Saw The Roots at a show in DC in 2005, and it’s easily the wildest show I’ve ever been too. They could rock the em effin crowd, MAN!!!!!!
I've heard plenty of live versions of studio recorded songs but the live versions are ALWAYS WORSE!!! ALWAYS!!! Not this one though. The spirit of it is true music, pulling you into the rhythm of a different world. I cab see every scene of t he vision they are painting. I love it💖
Bradford Thornton Yes they are worse. I didn't misspeak, my perception isn't off and I'm not confused. I've listened to plenty of studio and live cuts and in MY OPINION the studio versions tend to be better. The arrangements are tighter, The vocals are in tune and smoother and and the sound of the instruments are deeper. It's true that they do have multiple opportunities to get the perfect track, which is why they make the album. The only exceptions in MY OPINION are this track, Floetry "It's getting late" and U2 "Bad" those cuts are also Amazing live. I hate when people (like you) tell me what I think is wrong and what they think is right, as if their opinion is somehow more valid and superior to mine. It's presumptuous, egotistical, and insulting. What makes what you think superior to what I think when an opinion by definition is based on perspective? Get over yourself....... Your opinion is not the be all end all when it comes to what's valid or not. You need a lesson in learning to respect others.
Ivy River Nonsense. You don't understand how recordings work do you? Do you have a real understanding of how live music works? Let me answer that for you. No you don't. I'm all for respecting other's opinions but what you said is simply ridiculous. Recordings are constructed in the studio. I'm not saying that the artists/musicians do not perform but it is a *very* different type of performance compared to live. Back in the analog days they would record vocals, drums, guitars separately onto a specified number of recording tracks. These "mono" recordings are then taken and then mixed down to 2 channel stereo. Throw in the possible excess of reverb, processing, delay, effects and only God knows what else and you have yourself a record! Live albums in my experience have more of a pure sound because you actually have all of the musicians in the same area playing simultaneously. Usually the miking is more distant (resulting in a more realistic sound) and the mixing is done in real-time. The only reason why a live album should be worse then a studio recording is if the performance totally sucked or if the sound engineers didn't do their job correctly. In my experience it's usually been the latter. For the record I wasn't trying to be a "presumptuous" a**hole. I have professional acousticians in my family who would tell you the same.
Bradford Thornton All that being said, what does that have to do with my opinion? You have no idea what respect is let alone the ability to perform it. You yourself aren't a professional, you just listen to other people talk and regurgitate what someone else says. I don't care about the technical aspect of it, I DIDN'T CLAIM TO KNOW HOW IT'S DONE. IT'S NOT MY CONCERN, I ACTUALLY DON'T CARE. I was simply trying to convey my appreciation for how well this track was performed live. I'm guessing that you have low self-esteem and a need to constantly tell people what you "think" you know, in order to validate yourself. You've done a poor job here because you stated your not a professional, you know some people who are...... NO ONE CARES. And you are arguing OPINIONS, which by definition are based on perception, so everyone is right, but you're too ignorant with low self-esteem to realize your entire response to my initial statement is a moot point. Smh. . . Get a life sir. I won't read or respond to you again. This is stupid.
I went to Audio Engineering school and I know how live recordings work...and I agree with Ivy. This is of course a HipHop tging though. when it comes to other music its different. Live recordings can be and usually are better with jazz and rock because everyone is playing off each other and feeling it.
~I seen people caught in love like whirlwinds, Listening to their squads and listening to girlfriend's. That's exactly the point where their whole world ends. The Roots for a 6 year period were the best group in the world. From Do You Want More to Things Fall Apart no one did it better. Jill scott just killed this. I love Erika but Jill just crushed this.
i'm a huge lover of hip hop, but i'm not always a huge fan of hip hop live in general. it just isn't a pleasurable experience for me 90% of the time. this right here though, wow.
Maxwell I know what you mean. It doesn’t always come off well live it feels shouty sometimes. One of the best live shows I’ve seen is Kanye West he gets it right. And I thought Nas was good to when I see him. Busy Rhymes was one the bad ones.
In 100 years when they ask what is hip hop?
THIS.
THIS IS HIP HOP.
Trinity Anderson FACTS ! This is HIP HOP! WELL SAID MY FRIEND, WELL SAID
Spot on!!!
Trinity Anderson A...AMEN!!!
Hopefully they won't have to ask Trin.

mimi294 this comment. I don't think it could be better articulated. Well put.
Jill made it period ..she wrote the hook. Erykah couldn't use this on the battle
WELL SAID. I AGREE
Jill created it ... she wrote it....
at the time Jill was unknown except underground - it would have never been a radio hit if Ms. Badu didn't sing it...actually it was never released as a single with Jill on it...just the roots live had it. stellar song in all regards.

Jill Scott killed it OMG
"she said she loved my show in Paris
at Elysee Montmartre
and that I stepped off the stage
and took a piece of her heart" :)
best line of the song
"Ain't it funny, I got on all my clothes and I can still sing?!!!" That's my girl!!!
That's a classic line... I luv Ms.Jill singing& acting
True Statement!!
Jill Scott kills it on this track!
killing it!!!!!!
Erykah is on the original song not Jill
Love how it's a few bpm slower than the album version...so seductive
